Blood pressure (BP), one of the most important vital signs, is used to identify an emergency state and reflects the blood flow characteristics of the cardiovascular system. The conventional noninvasive method of measuring BP is inconvenient because patients must wear a cuff on their arm and the measurement process takes time. This paper proposes an algorithm for estimating the BP using the pulse transit time (PTT) of the photoplethysmography (PPG) and pressure pulse from finger at the same time as a more convenient way to measure the BP. After recording the electrocardiogram (ECG), measuring the pressure pulse, and performing PPG, we calculated the PTT from the acquired signals. Then, we used a multiple regression analysis to measure the systolic and diastolic BP indirectly. Comparing the BP measured indirectly using the proposed algorithm and the real BP measured with a sphygmomanometer, the systolic pressure had a mean error of ${\pm}3.240$ mmHg and a standard deviation of 2.530 mmHg, while the diastolic pressure had a satisfactory result, i.e., a mean error of ${\pm}1.807$ mmHg and a standard deviation of 1.396 mmHg. These results are more superior than existing method estimating blood pressure using the one PTT and satisfy the ANSI/AAMI regulations for certifying a sphygmomanometer i.e., the measurement error should be within a mean error of ${\pm}5$ mmHg and a standard deviation of 8 mmHg. These results suggest the possibility of applying our method to a portable, long-term BP monitoring system.
Purpose: This study was performed to find correlations between Edema Index and Pulse Energy in early postpartum period. Methods: Fiftynine postpartum women were participated in this study which was conducted with Inbody 720 (Biospace Co. Ltd) and 3D Blood Pressure Pulse Analyzer (3D-MAC). Edema Index (Extra Cellular Water/Total Body Water) calculated after body composition analysis and 3D-MAC result (Pulse Energy) were analysed within a week after delivery. Results: The results were as follows 1. Edema Indexes of the upper, lower limbs, trunk and whole body were associated with each other respectively. 2. Edema Indexes and Right Kwan pulse energy had significant positive correlation. 3. Right Kwan pulse energy showed positive correlations with Left Kwan, Right Chon, Right Cheok. Conclusions: Viscera associated with Postpartum Edema are Spleen, Lung, Liver and Vital Gate. The most important thing is thought to be Spleen.

A multi pulse rocket motor(MPRM) has several advantages compared to the single one. The range and the terminal velocity of the guided missile can be remarkably increased by the application of the pulse separation device(PSD) to the solid rocket motor which resulted in appropriate thrust distribution. In this study, the full scale heavy type dual pulse rocket motor with the bulkhead type PSD was designed, manufactured, and fire-tested. The bursting time and pressure of PSD were analyzed by the pressure, thrust and vibration results of static fire tests. As a result, the design requirement was verified that bursting pressure is lower than 30% of 2nd pulse operating pressure.
Purpose: The study was performed to evaluate effects of aroma therapy on the anxiety, blood pressure and pulse of uterine leiomyoma patients before surgery and to apply it as the actual nursing intervention. Method: From Aug1st to Nov. 30th, 2007, the experimental group (n=30) and the control group (n=30) were selected in 1 hospital, Busan. Lavender and Bergamot oil mixed together at a 3:2 ratio was applied to the experimental group two times at 8-9 pm the day before surgery and twice 30 minutes before the surgery. Anxiety, VAS, blood pressure, and pulse were measured to evaluate the effects of aroma therapy. The data analysis was done using the SPSS/PC 12.0 program using chi-square test and t-test. Results: Hypothesis 1 was supported. The VAS of the experimental group was lower than control group after aroma therapy. Hypothesis 2 was partly supported. The systolic blood pressure and pulse of experimental group was significantly decreased, but diastolic blood pressure wasn't difference. The VAS, systolic blood pressure and pulse of control group were increased. Conclusion: The study verified that the aroma therapy is a very effective nursing intervention that can reduce anxiety before surgery. It is recommended to apply aroma therapy actively to patients experiencing anxiety before surgery procedure.
Purpose: This study was done to examine the effects of moxibustion on physiological indices, such as 24-hr blood pressure, pulse pressure, and pulse rate, and autonomic nervous symptoms among adults with prehypertension. Methods: Participants were adults whose systolic and diastolic blood pressures were in the prehypertension stage and were not under treatment for the condition. Both experimental and control group consisted of 13 participants who were taking classes on acupuncture and moxibustion at a private institute. The experimental group received moxibustion once a day for 15 min, at least 5 days a week for 8 weeks. The results were analyzed using $x^2$-test, t-test, Fisher's exact test, Wilcoxon rank sum test and repeated measures ANOVA with the SAS program. Bonferroni correction method was adopted for multiple comparisons. Results: No significant change was observed in the 24-hr systolic and diastolic blood pressure between the two groups. Differences in the 24-hr pulse pressure and pulse rate were also not significant. However, significant decreases in headache, symptoms of flushing and fatigue were observed in the experimental group. Conclusion: The results suggest that moxibustion contributes to alleviating symptoms such as headache, flushing and fatigue associated with the autonomic nervous system among adults with prehypertension.
A 3 valve-type pulse tube refrigerator optains its cooling effect from pressure drop by releasing the part of the charged gas through hot end nozzle. The objective of this study is to analyze the performance and to find an optimal expansion pressure of the 3 valve-type pulse tube refrigerator. It is assumed that gas lumps are not mixed and periodically repeat the adiabatic compression and expansion processes. And the nodal model is applied for the analysis of the regenerator. As the result of analysis, the optimum pressure at the end of expansion process was about 80-90% of the maximum pressure.
Technology has had a tremendous impact on our daily lives. Recently, technology and its impact on aging has become an expanding field of inquiry. A major reason for this interest is that the use of technology can help older people who experience deteriorating health to live independently. In this paper we give a brief review of the in-home monitoring technologies for the elderly. In the pilot study, we analyze the possibility of employing the data generated by a continuous, unobtrusive nursing home monitoring system for predicting elevated(abnormal)pulse pressure(PP) in elderly(PP=systolic blood pressure-diastolic blood pressure). Our sensor data capture external information(behavioral) about the resident that is subsequently reflected in the predicted PP. By continuously predicting the possibility of elevated pulse pressure we may alert the nursing staff when some predefined threshold is exceeded. This approach may provide additional blood pressure monitoring for the elderly persons susceptible to blood pressure variations during the time between two nursing visits. We conducted a retrospective pilot study on two residents of the TigerPlace aging in place facility with age over 70, that had blood pressure measured between 100 and 300 times during a period of two years. The pilot study suggested that abnormal pulse pressure can be reasonably well estimated (an area under ROC curve of about 0.75) using apartment bed and motion sensors.

This study investigated the effects of changes to the pulsation factor of pulsed direct currents on wound healing. Patients with a pressure ulcer at a care hospital for the elderly were randomly divided into three groups: Group 1 involved the application of $100{\mu}s$ in pulse duration, 10 ms in pulse period, 100 pps in a pulsation factor, 15 mA in pulse amplitude, and polarity red+ by using pulsed direct currents; Group 2 involved a change of pulse period to 8 ms; and Group 3 received general wound management. Although there were no statistically significant differences in the changing stages of pressure ulcers among the groups, all the groups dropped in numerical stages. In the two groups to which pulsed direct currents were applied, there was a statistically significant reduction in the stages of pressure ulcers from the initial assessment to the 12-week assessment (p<.05). Even though there were no statistically significant differences in changes to the area of pressure ulcers among the groups, a statistically significant decrease was found in pulsed direct current group 2 whose pulse period was shortened (p<.05). There was no difference in the healing rate of pressure ulcers among the groups, but it made a numerical increase in pulsed direct current group 1 and group 2 and a numerical decrease in group 3. There were no significant differences in the characteristics of those who had a full recovery among the groups. Those findings indicate that pulsed direct currents have positive effects on the wound healing of patients with a pressure ulcer and that a treatment with pulsed direct currents whose pulsation factor is raised by reducing the pulse duration is especially effective.

The pulse gun device is designed to identify the transverse pressure wave propagation/damping mechanism into the combustion flow field and in the combustion chamber according to the arrangement of multiple injectors. The manufactured pulse gun was tested to verify operability at the target combustion pressure and control of the pressure wave intensity. Gas nitrogen was used to pressurize the high-pressure tube and an OHP film of $100{\mu}m$ thickness was used for the diaphragm. To check the speed and intensity of the pressure waves, the dynamic and static pressure were measured using the pressure transducer. The performance test confirmed that the manufactured pulse gun can generate pressure waves with transverse characteristics that can be controled for strength depending on the supply pressure.
The new empirical static model was constructed on the basis of dimension analysis to predict the pressure drop according to the operating conditions. The empirical static model consists of the initial pressure drop term (${\Delta}P_{initial}$) and the dust mass number term($N_{dust}=\frac{{\omega}_0{\nu}_f}{P_{pulse}t}$), and two parameters (dust deposit resistance and exponent of dust mass number) have been estimated from experimental data. The optimum injection distance was identified in the 64 experimental data at the fixed filtration velocity and pulse pressure. The dust deposit resistance ($K_d$), one of the empirical static model parameters got the minimum value at d=0.11m, at which the total pressure drop was minimized. The exponent of dust mass number was interpreted as the elasticity of pressure drop to the dust mass number. The elasticity of the unimodal behavior had also a maximum value at d=0.11m, at which the pressure drop increased most rapidly with the dust mass number. Additionally, the correlation coefficient for the new empirical static model was 0.914.
