In this paper, a method is presented for the optimal design of submarine pressure hull structures by taking advantage of genetic algorithm techniques. The objective functions and design constraints in the process of structural optimization are based on the ultimate limit states of hull structures. One of the benefits associated with the utilization of genetic algorithm is that the optimization process can be completed within short generations of design variables for the pressure hull structure model. Applied examples confirm that the proposed method is useful for the optimal design of submarine pressure hull structures. Details of the design procedure with applied examples are documented. The conclusions and insights obtained from the study are summarized.
The pressure hull of submersible is a unique structure which requires sophisti¬cated technology in its design and fabrication aspects. In this contribution an attempt has been made to review and analysis the pressure hull design such the most important subject as various geometrical shape, materials, and strength of pressure hull. Comparative study to theoritical analysis through the experimental measure¬ments are also carried out.

A Collaborative Optimization (CO) methodology for ring-stiffened composite material pressure hull of underwater vehicle is proposed. Structural stability and material strength are both examined. Lamination parameters of laminated plates are introduced to improve the optimization efficiency. Approximation models are established based on the Ellipsoidal Basis Function (EBF) neural network to replace the finite element analysis in layout optimizers. On the basis of a two-level optimization, the simultaneous structure material collaborative optimization for the pressure vessel is implemented. The optimal configuration of metal liner and frames and composite material is obtained with the comprehensive consideration of structure and material performances. The weight of the composite pressure hull decreases by 30.3% after optimization and the validation is carried out. Collaborative optimization based on the lamination parameters can optimize the composite pressure hull effectively, as well as provide a solution for low efficiency and non-convergence of direct optimization with design variables.
In these days, the rapid development in prediction technology using artificial intelligent is being applied in a variety of engineering fields. Especially, dimensionality reduction technologies such as autoencoder and convolutional neural network have enabled the classification and regression of high-dimensional data. In particular, pixel level prediction technology enables semantic segmentation (fine-grained classification), or physical value prediction for each pixel such as depth or surface normal estimation. In this study, the pressure distribution of the ship's surface was estimated at the pixel level based on the artificial neural network. First, a potential flow analysis was performed on the hull form data generated by transforming the baseline hull form data to construct 429 datasets for learning. Thereafter, a neural network with a U-shape structure was configured to learn the pressure value at the node position of the pretreated hull form. As a result, for the hull form included in training set, it was confirmed that the neural network can make a good prediction for pressure distribution. But in case of container ship, which is not included and have different characteristics, the network couldn't give a reasonable result.

The Hull Mounted Sonar Dome housing the sonar sensor array is a ship's structure protruded from ship bottom, which is under turbulent flow. The flow of sonar surface is highly disturbed and turbulent. In this case the wall pressure fluctuations within the turbulent boundary layer are one of the most important flow induced self noise sources of the SONAR system. We investigate the characteristics of the wall pressure fluctuations of the hull mounted sonar dome through the model test in the cavitation tunnel. This paper contains the wall pressure fluctuation spectra at various free stream velocities.

In this study, the dynamic structural behavior of pressure vessels due to pressure pulse initiated by implosion of neighbouring airbacked equipments including Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV), sensor system, and so on were dealt with for the structural design and safety assessment of pressure hulls of submarine. The dynamic buckling and collapse responses of pressure vessel in deep sea were investigated considering the effects of initial hydrostatic pressure and fluid-structure interactions. The governing equations for circular cylindrical shells were formulated theoretically assuming a relatively simple displacement fields and the derived nonlinear simultaneous ordinary differential equations were analysed by developed numerical solution algorithm. Finally, the introduced safety assessment procedures for the dynamic buckling behaviors of pressure hulls due to implosion pressure pulse were validated by comparing the theoretical analysis results with those of experiments for examples of simple cylinders.

Unlike structures in the air, the vibration analysis of a submerged or floating structure such as offshore structures or ships is possible only when the fluid-structure interaction is understood, as the whole or part of the structure is in contact with water. Specially, the importance of the added mass is not necessary to say like the submerged vehicle, all of the hull body, is positioned in the water. This paper introduce two method to find natural frequency in consideration of fluid-structure modal coupled vibration analysis. The purpose of this study is to analyze of the vibration characteristic of submerged vehicle to obtain the anti-vibration design data, which could be used in the preliminary design stage data. Underwater pressure hull of submerged vehicle is used as the model of this study. The F.E.M model is meshed by shell and beam element. Also, considering of the inner hull weight, mass element is distributed in the direction of hull length. Numerical calculations are accomplished using the commercial B.E.M code. The characteristics of natural frequency(eigenvalues), mode shape(eigenvectors) and frequency-displacement response are analyzed. The results of this study will be used as the useful design data in preliminary anti-vibration design stage.

Recently, in VLCC, shafting system is stiffer due to large engine power whereas hull structure is more flexible due to scantling optimization, which can be suffered from alignment damage by incompatibility between shafting and hull, In this study, shafting system without stern tube forward bush was adapted for less sensitive system against external factors. Also, shaft alignment analysis was considered with hull deflection at various ship loading conditions and stern tube after bush of long journal bearing was evaluated by static squeezing pressure and dynamic oil film pressure with sloping control. Whirling vibration was also reviewed to avoid resonance with propeller blade order. So, reliable shafting design for VLCC could be achieved through optimized alignment analysis for the system without stern tube forward bush.
The present study deals with the hydroelastic vibration analysis of structures in contact with fluid via coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) embedded with a finite element method (FEM) such that a structure displacement formulation is coupled with a fluid pressure-displacement formulation. For the preliminary study and validation of FEM based coupled FSI analysis, hydroelastic vibration characteristics of a rectangular plate in contact with fluid are first compared with the elastic vibration in terms of boundary condition and mode frequency. Numerical results from coupled FSI analysis have been shown to be rational and accurate, compared to energy method based theoretical solutions and experimental results. The effect of free surface on the vibration mode is numerically studied by changing the submerged depth of a rectangular plate. As a practical application, the hull structural vibration of 4,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) container ship is considered. Hydroelastic results of the ship hull structure are compared with those obtained from the elastic condition.

The sloshing pressure acting on a membrane-type LNG CCS is a typical irregular impact load, and the structural response of a tank system induced by sloshing also shows very complex behavior, including fluid structure interaction. Therefore, it is not easy to accurately estimate the sloshing impact pressures and resulting structural response. Moreover, a huge time consuming process to deal with the enormous pressure data obtained during a model tank test and the following structural analysis would be inevitable. To reduce the computation time for structural analysis, in this study, a rational structural modeling strategy was considered, and a simplified scheme to analyze the dynamic structural responses of an LNG CCS was introduced, which was based on the concept of the linear combination of the triangular response functions obtained by a transient response analysis of structures under unit triangular impact pressure. A structural analysis of a real Mark III membrane type insulation system under the sloshing impact pressure time histories obtained by model tests was performed using the various proposed structural models and simplified analysis scheme. The results were investigated in detail, including the elastic support effects of the hull structure.
