  • This paper proposes the optimal shape of an LNG fuel tank with a lattice pressure vessel (LPV) design for a tugboat. The LPV is a Type C tank with a design philosophy of "design by analysis," which facilitates greater variability of shape compared with other traditional Type C tanks. Further, compared with conventional cylindrical fuel tanks, the LPV provides better volumetric efficiency. Considering the shape of a fuel tank room, a trapezoidal shape of the LPV is concluded as the most optimal design. This study performs two major analyses of the LPV: structural and heat transfer analyses. First, a design procedure of the LPV based on structural analyses is elaborated. The finite element method is used for the analyses. Furthermore, the results guarantee that the maximum stresses by applied loads do not exceed an allowable stress limitation. Second, the heat transfer analysis of the LPV is conducted. LNG boil-off gas generation is analyzed based on various insulation materials and the degree of acuum.

  • In the design of super tankers or LNG carriers, which transport a large amount of liquid in the cargo tanks, the structural d11mage due to liquid sloshing is an important problem. The impact pressure from sloshing is most violent when the liquid motion of a partially filled tank is in resonance with the motion of a ship. In this study, the sloshing natural periods of a baffled tank, often installed to reduce liquid motion, is analyzed. A variational method is adopted to estimate the sloshing natural periods for a prismatic cargo tank with baffles of arbitrary filling depth of liquid; the results are compared with Lloyd's Register regulations on sloshing periods. In this study, using an effective liquid-fill-depth concept, sloshing periods for a baffled tank can be expressed by the same form as rectangular prismatic tanks without baffles. In contrast to Lloyd's Register regulations, which can be applicable only to cargo tanks with constant baffle size and distribution, the present results can be applicable to cases of variable baffle size and distribution.

  • A variety of inner baffles are often installed to reduce liquid sloshing and prevent tank damage. In particular, a porous baffle has a distinct advantage in reducing sloshing by changing the natural periods and dissipating the wave energy in a tank. In model tests, porous baffles with five different porosities were installed vertically in a liquid tank under sway motion. The free surface elevations and pressures were measured using an image processing technique and a pressure gage for various combinations of baffle's porosity and submergence depth, and tank's amplitude and period. The experimental results were in good agreement with the analytic solutions (Cho, 2015), with the exception of a quantitative difference at resonant periods. The experimental results showed that the sloshing characteristics in a tank were closely dependent on both the porosity and submergence depth of the baffle, and the optimal porosity existed near P = 0.1275.

  • Spherical storage tank for chemical plant is analyzed for the loads and their combinations in accordance with Section Ⅷ, Division 2 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Design Analysis of Butene storage tank is carried out by utilizing 3-dimensional plate and beam elements of a general purpose finite element program. Two separate 3-D finite element models are used; one for the global analysis of the entire spherical storage tank, the other for the local analysis of junction part and its vicinity of shell-to-supporting structures. The analysis is focused on the equator plate in the shell and the junction part of shell-to-supporting structures.

  • In this paper, the fluid flow in the two-dimensional tank is analyzed by the Finite Difference Method. The Navier-Stokes equation is modified for the tank fixed coordinate system. For the treatment of the free surface, the Volume of Fluid Method by Hirt and Nichols is adopted. The continuity equation and the Poisson equation which is derived from the Navier-Stokes equation to find the pressure are solved by the Successive-Line-Overrelaxation Method. The comparison of the calculated results with experimental data show a favorable agreement. The fluid flow in the two-dimensional tank can be predicted reasonably before the free surface reaches breaking by this numerical method.

  • The structure of satellite was of six parts of control system, power system, thermal control system, remote measurement command system, propellant system and thrust system. In these parts, propellant system consists of propellant tank and thrust device. What we want to perform is optimum design to minimaize the weight of propellant tank. In order to design optimal propellant tank, several parameters should be adopted form the tank geometry like the relative location of the lug and variation of the wall thickness. So the analysis was executed by finite element analysis for finding optimal design parameters. The structure was devided into 3 parts, the initial thickness zone, the transitional zone, and the weak zone, whose effects on the pressure vessel strength was investigated. Finally the optimal lug location and the three zone thickness were obtained and the weight was compared with the uniform thickness vessel.

  • The transient dynamic-response analysis of fuel-storage tanks of flying vehicles accelerating in the vertical direction is achieved with finite element method. A fuel-storage tank is a representative example of the fluid-structure interaction problem, in which structure and fluid media interact strongly. For the accurate analysis of this complicated fluid-structure system, we employed ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) coupling method. Two types of fuel-storage tanks, one with two baffles and the other without baffle, are considered to examine the effect of baffles. The fuel-storage tank with baffles shows more uniform hydrodynamic pressure distribution, resulting effective stress in structural region and faster convergence from transient to steady states. MSC/Dytran, a commercial FEM software for the 3D coupled dynamic analysis, is used for this analysis.

  • COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geosynchronous satellite and has been developing by KARI and Astrium for Ka-band communication, ocean observation and meteorological observation. COMS Chemical Propulsion System (CPS) uses a bipropellant propulsion subsystem, which is applied for transferring COMS from GTO to GEO (mission orbit) and implementing station-keeping manoeuvres. In this paper COMS CPS is briefly introduced for understanding. A few of mathematical thermodynamic modelings of bipropellant propulsion system in literatures are reviewed and authors has studied those models for developing a computer program, which predicts variations of thermodynamic properties such as temperature and pressure histories in the helium pressurant tank, MMH propellant tank and NTO propellant tank during LAE firing and on-orbit manoeuvrings. The CPS thermodynamic model may be used to compute pressurant and propellant masses and to size tank volumes.

  • Mechanical properties of domestic 374 stainless steel have been evaluated fur membrane material used in LNG storage tank. LNG tank is operated around -162$^{\circ}C$. The temperature of membrane depends on LNG level. Accordingly, the membrane material is deteriorated by variation of liquid pressure and temperature. Tensile test and fatigue life test were performed at room temperature and -l62$^{\circ}C$ per code requirements. Especially the biaxial fatigue life test was conducted with shaped membrane sheet at a thermal strain of $\Delta$T=190$^{\circ}C$ The test results obtained with the domestic 304 stainless steel showed better properties compared to the values required by code.
