  • The solenoid valve in ABS hydraulics, modulator is a two directional on-off valve and is controlled by around 100Hz high speed pulse width modulation. When the inlet valve is switched from open state to closed state, there are braking force degration, noise and vibration due to pressure surge phenomena in the hydraulic line and wheel cylinder. In this study, identifies pressure surge phenomenon in the braking process of a ABS, and investigates the way to reduce the phenomenon. For the purpose theoretical analysis on the pressure surge in the closed state hydraulic line, characteristic curve method based on wave equation was utilized. During this analysis, we could find pressure surge characteristics change due to hydraulic line change and PWM control conditions. In conclusion, by using the results of this study for the pressure surge prediction and reduction method, we could expect braking performance enhancement in Anti-Lock Braking System.

For the purpose of theoretical analysis on the pressure surge in the closed state hydraulic line, characteristic curve method based on wave equation was utilized. To reduce the surge, high frequency control of 20kHz was attempted. The result showed that the surge pressure of 50% was reduced compared to one observed in the low frequency control. Duty variation of high frequency can control current of solenoid valve and prevent sudden change of displacement.

  • Surge pressure is created by rapid change of flow rate due to operation of hydraulic component or accident of pipeline. Proper control of surge pressure in distribution system is important because it can damage pipeline and may have the potential to degrade water quality by pipe leakage due to surge pressure. Surge relief valve(SRV) is one of the most widely used devices and it is important to determine proper parameters for SRV's installation and operation. In this research, determining optimum parameters affecting performance of the SRV were investigated. We proposed the methodology for finding combination of parameters for best performance of the SRV. Therefore, the objective function for evaluate fitness of candidate parameters and surge pressure simulation software was developed to validate proposed parameters for SRV. The developed software was integrated into genetic algorithm(GA) to find best combination of parameters.

  • The field tests on the waterhammer were carried out for PalDang intake pumping station of the metropolitan water supply 5th stage project. The pumping station was equipped with the pump control valve as the main surge suppression device and the surge relief valve as auxiliary. However, the pump control valve had not been early controlled in the planned closing mode, and the slamming occurred to the valve which abruptly closed during the large reverse flow. Because the pressure wave caused by the pump failure was superposed on the slam surge, the upsurge increased so extremely that the shaft of the valve was damaged. It was desirable that the surge relief valve was installed in the pumping station or near the pump exit for the delay of response. After reforming the oil dashpot of the pump control valve, the sliming disappeared and the measured pressure was in fairly good agreement with the results of simulation. In case of three pumps for ${\phi}2,600$ pipeline being simultaneously tripped, the pressure head in the pumping station increased to 95.6 m, and the upsurge caused by the emergency stop of four pumps for ${\phi}2,800$ pipeline was 89.6m. We concluded that the pumping station acquired the safety and reliability for the pressure surge.

  • Information on the surge behaviors and stall stagnation boundaries for a nine-stage axial flow compressor are summarized on the basis of analytical data in comparison with those for a single-stage one, with attention to the pressure ratio effect. The general trends of the surge loop behaviors of the pressure-mass flow are similar for both compressors including the fact that the subharmonic surges tend to appear very near the stall stagnation boundaries. With respect to the nine-stage compressor, however, the mild loops in the subharmonic surges tend to be very small in size relative to the deep loops, and at the same time, insufficient surge recovery phenomenon, which is a kind of subharmonic surge, appears also far from the stagnation boundary for relatively short delivery flow-paths. The latter is found to be a rear-stage surge caused by unstalling and re-stalling of the rear stages with the front-stages kept in stall in the stalled condition of the whole compressor, which situation is caused by stage-wise mismatching in the bottom pressure levels of the in-stall multi-stage compressor. The fundamental information on the stall stagnation boundaries is given by a group of normalized geometrical parameters including relative delivery flow-path length, relative suction flow-path length, and sectional area-pressure ratio, and by another group of normalized frequency parameters including relative surge frequencies, modified reduced resonance frequencies, and modified reduced surge frequencies. Respective groups of the normalized parameters show very similar tendency of behaviors for the nine-stage compressor and the single-stage compressor. The modified reduced resonance frequency could be the more reasonable parameter suggesting the flow-induced oscillation nature of the surge phenomena. It could give the stall stagnation boundary in a more unified manner than the Greitzer's B parameter.

  • A storm surge is gradually increased in the Korean peninsula. Furthermore, this phenomenon is confined not only the Korean peninsula but also the whole world. A storm surge induced by storm, typhoon, or cyclone is a phenomenon that the water surface elevation is raising by the barometric pressure difference and this water level rising threatens the coastal facilities, settlement, or lives. Most of coastal region in our country are unsafe from this disaster. Even though we are not able to prevent the generation of this phenomenon, we can reduce the damages by investigating the kind of storm surge disaster. Once we finish this investigation, we can reduce the damages by offering the information for risk prior to an invasion of storm surge. This study, we analyzed the previously occurred storm surge damages, and this data can be utilized as a guide for those who live near the coastal region providing the information about the predicting scale of the storm surge

  • The main objective of this paper is to design and test a new type of polymer ZnO surge arrester for AC power system of railroad vehicles. Metal oxide surge arrester for most electric power system applications, electric train and must not have explosive breakage of the housing to minimize damage to other equipment when subjected to internal high short circuit current. When breakdown of ZnO elements in a surge arrester occurs due to flashover, fault short current flows through the arrester and internal pressure of the arrester rises. The pressure rise can usually be limited by fitting a pressure relief diaphragm and transferring the arc from the inside to the outside of the housing. However, there is possibility of porcelain fragmentation caused by the thermal shock. pressure rise, etc. Non-fragmenting of the housing is the most desired way to prevent damage to other equipment. The pressure change which is occurred by flashover become discharge energy. This discharge energy raises to damage arrester housing and arrester housing is dispersed as small fragment. Therefore, the pressure relief design is requested to obstruct housing dispersion. The main research works are focused on the structure design by finite element method, pressure relief of module, and studies of performance of surge arrester for electric railway vehicle.

  • Surge phenomena in the zone of reduced speeds in a system of a nine-stage axial flow compressor coupled with ducts were studied analytically by use of a surge transient simulation code. Main results are as follows. (1) Expansion of apparently stable, non-surge working area of the pressure vs. flow field beyond the initial stage-stall line was predicted by the code in the lower speed region. The area proved analytically to be caused by significantly mismatched stage-working conditions, particularly with the front stages deep in the rotating stall branch of the characteristics, as was already known in situ and in steady-state calculations also. (2) Surge frequencies were found to increase for decreasing compressor speeds as far as the particular compressor system was concerned. (3) The tendency was found to be explained by a newly introduced volume-modified reduced surge frequency. It suggests that the surge frequency is related intimately with the process of emptying and filling of air into the delivery volume. (4) The upstream range of movement of the fluid mass having once passed through the compressor in surge was found to reduce toward the lower speeds, which could have caused additionally the increase in surge frequency. (5) The concept of the volume-modified reduced surge frequency was able to explain, though qualitatively at present, the behaviors of the area-pressure ratio parameter for the stall stagnation boundary proposed earlier by the author.

  • If large pressure fluctuation is observed in the draft tube of a Francis turbine at part-load operation, we have generally called it draft-tube-surge. As occurrence of this phenomenon seriously affects the limit of turbine operating range, extensive studies on the surge have been made since proposal of surge-frequency criterion given by Rheingans. According to the literature survey of related topics in recent IAHR symposiums on hydraulic machinery and systems, in which state-of-the-art contributions were mainly presented, a certain review of them may be desirable for an outlook on the future studies in this research field. Thus, in this review paper, the authors' previous attempts for the last three decades to challenge the following topics: a rational method for component test of a draft tube, nature of spiral vortex rope and its behavior in a draft tube and cavitation characteristics of pressure fluctuations, are introduced together with other related contributions, expecting that more useful and significant studies will be accomplished in the future.
