  • Fishes usually form a group in water to minimize drag coefficient and this fish schooling is one of representative problems in computational fluid dynamics. In this research, we simulated two fishes as a rectangle. We arranged rectangle horizontal and vertical, then we changed distance between two rectangles and simulated pressure of fluid and drag coefficient. We could find the best distance and position of two fishes that makes minimum drag coefficient.

  • Two-phase flow phenomena are observed in many industrial facilities and make much importance of optimum design for nuclear power plant and the liquid transportation system. The particular flow pattern depends on the conditions of pressure, flow velocity, and channel geometry. However, the research on drag reduction in two-phase flow is not intensively investigated. Therefore, experimental investigations have been carried out to analyze the drag reduction and void fraction by polymer addition in the two-phase flow system. We find that the polymer solution changes the characteristic of two-phase flow. The peak position of local void friction moves from tile wall of the pipe to the center of the pipe when polymer concentration increase. And then we predict that it is closely related with the frau reduction.

  • The pumping characteristics of a single-stage disk-type drag pump ( DTDP ) are calculated, for the variation of the vertical clearance between a rotor and stator and of the radial clearance between a rotor and casing wall, by the three-dimensional direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC)method. The gas flow mainly belongs to the molecular transition flow region. Spiral channels of a DTDP are cut on the both the upper and lower sides of a rotating disk, but the stationary disks are planar. As a consequence of results, the vertical and radial clearances have a significant effect on the pumping performance. Experiments are performed under the outlet pressure range of 0.4 $^{\sim}$ 533 Pa. When the numerical results are compared to the experimental data, the numerical results agree well qualitatively.

  • The analysis of the performance and the internal flow according to various numerical models used for the interior ballistics has been conducted. The internal flow has been mainly affected by the drag model. As results, oscillations of the pressure differences between the breech and the shot base has been reduced with a deceased drag of the propellant. The major performance of the interior ballistics has no relation to the models using Nusselt number for heat transfer coefficient. The negative pressure difference without the heat transfer of the propellant has not been shown.

The vertical clearance has a significant effect on the pumping performance. Experiments are performed under the outlet pressure range of 0.4∼533 Pa. • Experimental studies on drag reduction of a circular cylinder of diameter D were conducted in the subcritical flow regime at Reynolds numbers in the range $4{\times}10^4{\leq}Re{\leq}10^5$. To shield the cylinder rear surface from the pressure deficit of the unsteady vortex generation in the near wake, two shield plates were attached downstream of the separation points to form a cavity at the base region. The chord of the shield plates, L, ranged from 0.22 to 1.52 D and the cavity width, G, was in the range from 0 to 0.96 D. It is concluded that significant drag reductions from that of a plain cylinder may be achieved by proper sizing of the shield plates and the base cavity. The study shows that using a pair of shield plates at G/D of 0.86 and angular position ${\theta}$ of ${\pm}121^{\circ}$ results in a configuration with percentage drag reduction of 40% for L/D of 0.5, and 55% for L/D of 1.0.

  • A wing operating in close proximity to the ground exhibits a reduction in induced drag, which increase the lift/drag ratio. The poert-augmented ram (RAR) phenomenon involves directiing the efflux from forward mounted propulsion ststem under the wings, with the efflux nearly stagnated under the wings. In the present paper, 3 dimentional PAR was numerically studied by solving the Navier-Stokes equations. Pressure distribution and velocity vectors are calculated around the wing surface and the ground. Through the numerical simulation, Cp values and lift/drag ratio are carefully reviewed by changing the height/chord; 0.05, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.8. The shape of model is NACA 0012 with a span/chord ratio of 3.0. According to the numerical results, the relationship between lift/drag and height/chord is fairly reasonable.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of aerodynamic drags of model cars. The effects of cooling air on total drag were introduced by using momentum theorem. Vehicle-liked Ahmed body and 1/5 model car were used to evaluate the increments of drags due to the internal flow. The results were compared with momentum theorem and other's experiments and showed good agreements. In the case of Ahmed body, drags were increased by 22% due to the internal flow and decreased linealy by reducing internal air flow rates and inlet areas. The experiments on 1/5 model car with ill-defined air flow passage showed 10% increment of drag. The results of present study showed that cooling drag could be predicted by momentum theorem within small errors.

  • Variations of the drag and lift forces of a circular cylinder in a planar turbulent jet were experimentally investigated. The force was directly measured using the load cell and estimated by integrating the pressure distribution on the cylinder. As the cylinder moves outward from the center of the jet, the direction of lift force changes and the drag force decreases. Reynolds number, the ratio of cylinder's diameter to half width of jet had effect on maximum drag coefficient and the location where the direction of lift changes.

  • A splitting method for the direct numerical simulation of solid-liquid mixtures is presented, where a symmetric pressure equation is newly proposed. Through numerical experiment, it is found that the newly proposed splitting method works well with a matrix-free formulation fer some bench mark problems avoiding an erroneous pressure field which appears when using the conventional pressure equation of a splitting method. When deriving a typical pressure equation of a splitting method, the motion of a solid particle has to be approximated by the 'intermediate velocity' instead of treating it as unknowns since it is necessary as a boundary condition. Therefore, the motion of a solid particle is treated in such an explicit way that a particle moves by the known form drag (pressure drag) that is calculated from the pressure equation in the previous step. From the numerical experiment, it was shown that this method gives an erroneous pressure field even for the very small time step size as a particle velocity increases. In this paper, coupling the unknowns of particle velocities in the pressure equation is proposed, where the resulting matrix is reduced to the symmetric one by applying the projector of the combined formulation. It has been tested over some bench mark problems and gives reasonable pressure fields.
