An experimental study was carried out to analyse the explosion characteristics of flammable gas-air mixtures. Used flammable gases were hydrogen, methane, acethylene, ethylene and pro-pane, explosion Pressure, explosoin pressure rising rate, and flame propagation velocity were measured experimentaly. The maximum explosion pressure and rising rate of flammmalbe gas air mixtures were appeared at the range of slightly higher concentration than the stoichiometric concentration. Initial pressure before explosion was controlled from 0.6 to 2.0kg/cm absolutly. Explosion pressure was increased with increment of the initial pressure, and the relationship between initial pressure and explosion pressure was Pe = KPi. The effect of vessel size on explosion characteristics was also analysed In this experiment. Explosion pressure was increased with in-creasing the vessel size, otherwise explosion pressure rising rate was decreased. When we locate a dummy material in vessel explosion pressure was decreased with increasing the dummy volume but exlosion pressure rising rate was increased.

In this paper, the low velocity impact characteristics of filament winding CFRP pressure vessel was investigated using numerical and experimental methods. The cylinder part of CFRP vessel was impacted using triangular shape impactor which simulated the sharp edge of dropping tools and impact response behavior of CFRP was reviewed. The mechanical behavior, such as deformation and stress distribution, were also predicted by explicit finite element method and the validity of the model was investigated. For the quantitative evaluation of the residual strength of the pressure vessel after impact, a series of the ring specimens was cut from the impacted vessel and its burst pressure was measured by hydraulic pressure hoop tension test. As the results, the relationship between the residual strength degradation and the impact energy was successively obtained and a useful methodology to evaluate quantitatively the impact damage tolerance of CFRP pressure vessel was established.
Composite pressure vessels with HDPE (high density polyethlyne) liner with metal boss at each end were developed by Filament Winding Process. The vessel is composed of a dome-shaped part at each end and a cylinder-shaped part at the middle of the vessel. The environmental tests carried out for possible vessel materials such as High Density Polyethlyn (HDPE), resins and reinforcing fibers up to a year showed no significant damages. The boss was designed to minimize the gas leak which was verified by FEM analysis. Most ideal fiber tension was obtained by experimental method and the fiber volume fraction, $\textrm{V}_{f}$, obtained by image analyzer were 55.4 % in cylinder and 55.6 % in dome parts, respectively. Winding pattern is programmed to control the composite thickness in the dome areas such that the failure of the vessel may occur in the cylinder. During the cure, the vessel was rotated and a constant internal pressure of 0.62 bar was applied. From this, the vessel's burst pressure is improved by 28 %. The burst and fatigue tests for under-wound and fully wound vessel showed satisfactory results.
This paper presents design safety analysis of pressure vessels. The gas pressure and thermal loads are applied to the pressure vessel simultaneously. In this study, ASME Sec. VIII Div. 2 code was accepted for the safety design of high-pressure vessel. And this result was analyzed using a coupled thermal-mechanical FEM analysis technique. The FEM computed result shows that ASME design code may not guarantee for combined loads of high gas pressure and thermal loads. And solid pressure vessel may be safe compared to other pressure vessels with supporting rings round the cylinder body.

In this work, two dynamic absorbers are introduced and designed to reduce the vibration of the large-size pressure vessel of a reactor for a petrochemical plant. The vibration modes and harmonic responses of the vessel are firstly analyzed by the finite element method. On the basis of the analyzed results, two dynamic absorbers are designed by a simple design theory. Furthermore, an optimization process is executed and an optimal design of the dynamic absorber is obtained to improve performance and structural safety of the vessel. As a result, the maximum displacement and stress of the vessel is decreased about 85% and 65% respectively, the design criteria being satisfied.

When we use a Finite Elements Method (FEM) to solve a linear static analysis problem, number of elements need to be sufficiently small for convergence of the solution. If we analysis a part, whose curvature is varying heavily, we face to determine how small the elements size is, because the calculated stress is increased as the elements are smaller. In this case, we need to analysis with mesh insensitive method, stress linearization. We can get a solution that is not varying with the elements size if the size is smaller than a certain level. In this paper, we evaluate a pressure vessel having geometrical discontinuities using stress linearization. First, we analysis the vessel with global model, including all part of the vessel, using large shell elements. Second, we analysis the local part of the vessel, which is the small part occurring maximum stress, using small continuum elements. Last, we evaluate the safety of the pressure vessel according to the ASME Sec. VIII Div 2.

Developing a model was carried out to predict the characteristic of a pressure vessel from which the gas was vented through an orifice. An experimental test was conducted on a pressure vessel applicable to a propulsion system so that representative pressure and temperature were measured. Simulations were conducted with models using assumptions considering heat transfer inside the vessel, and the results were compared to those from the experiment. As a result, it was found out that a proposed heat transfer model was proper to predict pressure and temperature of the vented gas comparable to the measured data.
The goals of the paper are to understand the impact damage behavior and identify the effect of surface protective materials on impact resistance in filament wound composite pressure vessels. For these, a series of low velocity impact tests was performed on specimens cutting from the full scale pressure vessel by the instrumented impact testing machine. The specimens are classified into two types, which are with and without surface protective material. The visualization for impact damage by two different impactors is made by metallurgical microscope. Based on the impact force history and damage, the impact resistance parameters were employed, rod its validity in identifying the damage resistance of filament wound composite pressure vessel was reviewed. As the results, the impact resistance of the filament wound composites and its dependency on the surface protective material were evaluated quantitatively

Structural behavior of high-pressure composite vessels of TYPE 3 (full-wrapped over a seamless aluminum liner) was studied through numerical simulations based on 3D nonlinear finite element method. Under high-pressure loading, a TYPE 3 composite vessel shows material nonlinearity due to elastic-plastic deformation of aluminum liner, and mismatch of deformation at the junction of cylinder and dome causes geometrical nonlinearity. Finite element modeling and analysis technique considering this nonlinearity was presented, and a pressure vessel of 6.8L of internal volume was analyzed. Design specification to satisfy requirements was determined based on analysis results.
