  • To investigate an effect of sintering atmosphere on microstructure and properties of metallic particle dispersed ceramic based composites, the powder mixtures of $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni, synthesized by chemical solution process, were hot-pressed under different atmospheres such as hydrogen or argon gas and different sintering temperature. Hot-pressed composite in a hydrogen atmosphere exhibited less reaction phase of $FeAl_2O_4$ and enhanced mechanical properties than that in an argon atmosphere. Furthermore, decreasing hot-pressing temperature produced a refinement of ceramic matrix and metallic dispersion particles as well as improvement of mechanical properties. The change of mechanical properties in the composites with different sintering conditions was explained by microstructural characteristics relating to reaction phase formation.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of the metal-heat pressed glass ceramic bilayer structure. Methods: Metal framework specimens were prepared and surface is spreaded opaque(IPS InLine system opaque, IvoclarVivadent, Liechtenstein). There were 10 specimens for each bilayer dental ceramic group. The first group was porcelain fused metal, Press on metal IPS Inline press group, and press on metal HASS prototype group. Specimens measured for the shear bond strength on Schwickerath test by Instron universal testing machine(Instron3345, Instron Corp., USA). Mean average bond strength values of each specimen group were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA analysis of variance Saphiro-wilk's test. Statistical analysis were performed using IBM SPSS 23.0(IBM Co., Armonk, USA) Results: $RMS{\pm}SD$ The highest mean average HASS POM showed a bond strength value ($47.55{\pm}12.80Mpa$). The lowest mean average values Porcelain fused metal ($33.30{\pm}2.00Mpa$). Independent t-test was conduct to analysis the significant difference (p<0.05) (Table 3). Conclusion: Three kinds of Metal/ glass bilayer dental ceramics bond strength were clinical acceptability. Especially, as lithium disilicate containing represents higher bond strength.

  • Hard shaped bodies are made by sintering a cold-pressed compact of a boron carbide compound which contains a densification aid. Titanium diboride and carbon were used as a densification aid in a range of 1% to 10% by weight. The effects of sintering temperature and additives on linear shrinkage porosity hardness bend strength and microstructure were examined. The initial partical size dependence on the sintered density was also discussed.

  • In order to investigate the effect o green microstructure on the sintering behavior and properties of AlN ceramics, samples were prepared by slip casting and dry pressing. The slip cast samples had high green density, fine pore size and narrow pore size distribution. They showed much higher sinterability and more homogeneous sintered microstructure compared to the dry pressed samples. Both increased thermal conductivity and flexural strength for samples prepared by slip casting could be attributed to the improved microstructural homogeneity with isolated second phase(s).

  • Sinter-active yttria powders were prepared by a solution precipitation with using a self-decomposing precipitation agent NH2CONH2(urea). The cold-pressed powders can be sintered to full density and the microstructure of grains less than 200 nm at a temperature as low as 120$0^{\circ}C$. The activity of the yttria powder has been controlled by varying nucleation conditions during precipitation and by minimizing formation of aggregates. The type of precursor is decisive in preparation of a sinter-active oxide powder, and urea is desirable as a precipitation agent for an active yttrium oxide powder.

  • Effect of diffusion induced recrystallization(DIR) on mechanical properties of hot-pressed TiC was in-vestigated. The TiC specimen was electroplated with Cr and then heat-treated at 1550. Through the DIR process a new set of (Ti, Cr) C mixed carbide grains with uniform and small size was formed at the surface. As a consequence the scattering in fracture strength decreased and the toughness increased.

  • W-Ti-C-N based multiphase hard materials have been prepared from WC/TiN powder mixture. By sintering at and above 190$0^{\circ}C$, the two phases of powder mixture has transformed into intermixed W, W2C and Ti(C, N) phases. For the temperature range between 180$0^{\circ}C$ and 210$0^{\circ}C$, the sintered or hot pressed samples show maximum density and hardness. The seems that metallic W grains enhance the fracture toughness of materials. The wear resistance of the material is found to increase with increasing hardness.

  • Four kinds of silicon nitride based ceramic materials have been hot pressed. Effect of the sintering additives on the phase transformation, microstructural development and mechanical properties was investigated. While sintering under the same condition a big difference among the microstructures of the specimens, they appeared alike if sintered to have a similiar $\alpha$-$\beta$ phase ratio. The specimen of the stoichiometric $\alpha$-$\beta$ sialon composition showed very limited amount of the intergranular glassy phase and a significant degree of the residual stress. It exhibited almost no strength degradation up to $1300^{\circ}C$, and the strength of the specimen degraded more as its composition deviated from the stoichiometry.

  • A complex-shaped part was successfully fabricated by Laminate Object Manufacturing (LOM) technique using silicon nitride tape with aligned silicon nitride whisker seeds. The ceramic tape was cut using a commercial cutting plotter according to the cross section drafts generated by slicing a 3-D model, and then the tapes were stacked sequentially. In order to improve adhesion between the tapes, stacking was performed under vacuum. After binder burnout, the part was encapsulated using latex emulsion and was cold isostaically pressed under 250 ㎫. It was sintered to 98.5% TD at 2148 K for 4 h under 2 ㎫ nitrogen pressure.

  • The strength of ceramic was improved by lamination by suppressing the propagation of cracks with compressive residual stress in the face layer of the laminate. Hot pressed SiAlON+SiC/SiC/SiAlON+SiC laminate discs were fabricated for tailored residual stress. The residual stress in this laminate was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD). There was considerable compressive residual stress in the face layer. A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed to support the measured XRD results and to determine the stress field in the laminate. The residual stress measured by XRD had satisfactory agreement with the analytically calculated and FEA values. The measured value by XRD was -385 ${\pm}$ 20 MPa over most of the face layer. The calculated and FEA values were -386 MPa and -371MPa, respectively. FEA also showed significantly modified stresses and the maximum tensile stress near the edge region which are possible crack generators in the presence of flaws or contact damage.
