  • In this study, we investigated preservice elementary school teachers' awareness of students' misconceptions about several science topics, and the variables influencing their awareness. Seniors (N=106) from an university of education were asked to predict elementary school students' misconceptions on science topics such as phase changes and dissolution. Their conceptions about teaching and learning were also measured. The results indicated that the preservice teachers' predictions about the kinds and/or the ratios of students' misconceptions were different from those reported in previous studies. The low level preservice teachers in terms of the degrees of possessing traditional conception about teaching and learning predicted more students' common misconceptions. The degrees of preservice teachers' constructivist conception about teaching and learning and their major, however, did not significantly influence the numbers of common misconceptions predicted.

  • In this study, clicker, also known as classroom response system, was applied to the chemistry method course at the university in Gyeongbuk, and preservice chemistry teachers' perceptions of clicker were surveyed. Before starting lecture, operation and class application of clickers were introduced to preservice teachers, and then 4-5 questions were presented to them in most classes during the term. After preservice teachers were asked to answer the questions, lecturer gave feedback based on the class answer distribution. Questions presented to preservice teachers were recall and/or understanding questions on learning contents, opinion questions, and questions about muddiest point. At the end of semester, preservice teachers were asked to rate their perception of clikers in terms of likert scale and essay type. They had positive perceptions of clicker use in aspects of cognitive effects, affective effects and media characteristics. They preferred conceptual understanding questions and monitoring questions among 8 clicker question types. Some cases using clickers in lecture and educational implications were also included.

  • This study is to understand preservice science teachers' previous experience, beliefs about teaching and learning, and visions of themselves as future teachers. The data were collected from two individual interviews with 7 voluntary students and analyzed qualitatively for category construction. As the results of this study, we presented two cases, which showed that their different views of teaching science are strongly related to their previous experiences as learners and observers in schools, and that there is the apparent consistency between each participant's beliefs about science teaching and learning and their own visions of teaching in a science classroom. Implications for preservice science teacher education related to the results were discussed.

  • This study sought to examine preservice teachers' beliefs about their intent to use computers and Internet resources in mathematics classrooms. Also, web-based instruction on topics in elementary school mathematics was used to foster teachers' confidence and competence in using instructional technology, thereby promoting positive attitudes toward use of computers and Internet resources in the mathematics classroom. The results indicated that students who participated in the web-based instructions exhibited a significantly (p < 0.05) better attitude toward using computers and web-based resources in teaching mathematics than did students in the control group.

  • This study examined what questions posed, and for arranging the matters, what decisions made, what practices put into by elementary preservice teachers during his or her enacting and reflecting mathematics teaching. Analysis of the study focused on the mathematics instructions practiced by four participants in practicum for senior students. Their own questions raised by each one in the instructional designs, performances, and reflections were picked out and categorized by five dimensions of mathematics instruction; the nature of classroom tasks, the role of the teacher, the social culture of the classroom, mathematical tools as learning supports, and equity and accessibility. Their instructional decision-makings and action-takings for answering to these questions were analised.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how preservice secondary teacher teaching practice affected future teachers' features, which they should have as teachers. Based on the differences of pre- and post- test of the survey of their teacher competence, the participants of this study were grouped 40 student teachers as the teaching profession, and 58 liberal arts student teachers of learning teaching of 98 students. This study attempted to seek what preservice teachers expected and sought as future teachers throughout the teaching practice in secondary schools. We considered 5 areas of view of teaching profession knowledge and instruction skill, guidance, personality, and general attitude in the teaching profession as an effective teacher competence. The results showed that pre service teachers asserted that the teaching practice provided opportunities to improve their teacher competence as future teachers. However there was significant effective change in the group of student teachers as the teaching profession. This study also suggested that it is necessary to consider the liberal arts student teachers of learning teaching program reflecting the results of this study.

  • In current computer education, we have inclined to emphasize information literacy for k-12 students. On the other hand, in spite that teachers are core variable in school education system, we have neglected teacher's education of information and communication technology. In addition, we haven't made a effort to expand preservice teacher's ability to utilize information and communication technology in the teacher's college and the college of education. With these recognitions, we made a diagnosis of problems by analysis of current condition of curriculum of the teacher's college and the college of education and explored the vision of ICT utilization education in k-12 computer education in this study. In addition, we suggested educational objectives and contents based on national requiring standards for ICT in teacher preparation, required ICT capability of preservice teachers for kind of teacher's task and the direction of computer education.

  • The quality of science teachers is one of the most important factors to improve the science education in secondary schools. In this study the current status of preservice education of secondary science teachers was surveyed and the directions for the improvement were suggested as follows: 1. The purposes of departments of science education have to be partially revised to include other education programs related to science education than preservice training courses of science teachers. 2. Training courses of integrated science teacher should be organized differently from those of physics, chemistry, biology or earth science teachers because their requirements are different. 3. Strict standards of curricula for training science teacher have to be established and applied practically. 4. The curricula of departments of science education have to reflect the contents and the changes of secondary science education. 5. More credits to subjects on the science education, the nature of science, and the laboratory experiments should be taken in the preservice courses of science teachers. 6. Professors at the department of science education have to use various methods to teach inquiry lab and evaluation techniques so that students can experience them at the training courses. 7. The number of professors majoring in science education at the department of sciece education should be increased. 8. Enough research funds have to be supported to activate the researches in science education.

  • This study aimed to investigate technological pedagogical and content knowledge(TPACK) model, and to apply this model to preservice education. To perform this study, TPACK survey instrument was distributed to 142 preservice teachers who took technology integration course. The result showed that technology and content knowledge improved significantly, and pedagogical and pedagogical content knowledge did not show meaningful differences among 7 sub-categories. Based on the result of this study, we discussed the improvement of technological and content knowledge, and pedagogical knowledge. Also, we suggested that (preservice) teacher education should consider the combination of technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge in Korea.
