Using a commercial epoxy/carbon fiber composite prepreg (DMS 2224) as a model system, the cure kinetics of vitrifying thermoset system were analyzed by isothermal and dynamic-heating experiments. Focusing on the processing condition of high performance composite systems, a phenomenological kinetic model was developed by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and reaction kinetics theories. The model system exhibited a limited degree of cure as a function of isothermal temperature seemingly due to the diffusion-controlled reaction rates. The diffusion-controlled cure reaction was incorporated in the development of the kinetic model, and the model parameters were determined from isothermal experiments. The first order reaction was confirmed from the characteristic shape of isothermal cure thermograms, and the activation energy wes 78.43 kJ/mol. Finally, the proposed model was used to predict a complex autoclave thermal condition, which was composed of several isothermal and dynamic-heating stages.
Low temperature cure prepregs are being developed for use in the preparation of large-structured fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites with good performance. Cure behavior and chemorheology of low temperature cure epoxy resin system, based on epoxy resin, curing agent, and accelerators, were investigated to provide a matrix resin suitable for the prepreg preparation. Characteristics of cure reaction were studied in both dynamic and isothermal conditions by means of differential scanning calorimetry and rheometry. The low temperature cure epoxy resin system suggested in this study as a matrix resin was curable at $80^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, and showed the gel times of 120 and 20 min at 80 and $90^{\circ}C$, respectively. Thermal and mechanical properties of the cured sample were almost the same as high temperature cure counterparts.

An electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) is a unique probe that does not require a couplant or gel and also can usually generate or detect an ultrasonic wave into specimens across a small gap. It, therefore can be applied in a noncontact mode with a high degree of reproducibility. Especially stiffness of composites depends on layup sequence of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates. It is very important to evaluate the layup errors in prepreg laminates. A nondestructive technique can therefore serve as a useful measurement for detecting layup errors. This shear wave for detecting the presence of the errors is very sensitive. A decomposition model has been used in the interpretation and prediction of test results. Test results have been com pared with model data. It is found that the high probability shows between tests and the model utilized in characterizing cured layups of the laminates. Also a C-scan method was used for detecting layup of the laminates because of extracting fiber orientation information from the ultrasonic reflection caused by structural imperfections in the laminates. Therefore, it was found that interface C-scan images show the fiber orientation information by using two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2-D FFT).
The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of metal z-pinning on the failure behavior of cocured composite single-lap joints. Three different pin diameters (0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 mm) and three pin areal densities (0.5, 2.0, and 4.0%) were examined. The specimens were fabricated by T700-12K-31E#2510 unidirectional prepreg from Toray. Stainless steel pins were used for z-pinning. Test results showed that except one case with extremely low pin density of 0.5%, all other z-pinned joints exhibited lower initial crack stresses than those of the unpinned joint. However the ultimate strength of the z-pinned joint increased up to 45% at most. Furthermore, even after the complete failure of the joint, the z-pins sustained the carried load to a certain degree experiencing large deformation and provided the stable fracture behavior for the composite joint.
In this study, void behavior of composite laminate by local internal pressure gradient due to structural geometry and surface film application condition was experimentally evaluated through fabrication of spar/skin integrated structure specimens. Viscosity comparison and thermal analysis for both carbon fiber prepreg and surface film were conducted and cure characteristic and rate difference were analyzed. 2 types of spar/skin integrated structural specimens were prepared based on different application condition of surface film. Subsequently, those specimens were evaluated through visual surface inspection, non-destructive and destructive inspection. In a specimen #1 with full application of surface film, low pressurized area of composite laminate created by pressure gradient of structural geometry had voids. It exhibited that voids could not be evacuated and were locked in cured laminate by the influence of pre-cured surface film with relatively faster cure rate. In a specimen #2 without surface film, it revealed that all internal voids disappeared in the cured laminate. Therefore, it is verified that surface film acts as barrier film preventing void movement and evacuation during autoclave cure.
In this paper, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) particles were added between the sheets of prepreg, and the effect of on many properties of BN-embedded carbon fiber reinforced plastics was investigated. The amount of BN particles which corresponds with 0 to 15 wt% of total resin weight was used as an additive material. The tensile strength and the inter-laminar shear strength of BN-embedded CFRP samples were improved by maximally 13.6%, and 6.7%, respectively. The tendency changes of thermal, electrical conductivities and the morphology of cross-section of CFRPs were also observed. This study suggests the possibility of controlling the characteristics of carbon fiber-BN-epoxy composites to use for aerospace applications.

This paper deals with the study on injection with EPDM(Ethylene propylene dien ter polymer) the gap which narrow, long, and tubular between an ablative composite tube and a steel motor case. Small size motor assembly was designed and manufactured for man-portable air defense propulsion system. Motor assembly is consisted with steel tube, ablative composite tube and insulation rubber. Ablative composite tube was made of carbon/phenolic prepreg by rolling process and insulation rubber was made of EPDM by TPM(Trans-power molding) process. To select the insulation rubber material, we tested ablative insulation property and degradation property at first and we tested fluidity, adhesive property and hardness of EPDM rubber. Finally we designed TPM process to manufacture motor case assembly and the motor case assembly was examined by non-destructive test(X-ray).

This study represents the Nondestructive Test about impact damage of composite materials made by different lay-up patterns and degrees. For this study, they were examined by the drop test on composite materials of two type lap-up patterns with fabric and unidirectional prepreg and examined nondestructive test of those. Nondestructive methods were X-ray test with $ZnI_2$ penetrant and Ultrasonic C-scan. The defect detectability of X-ray and Ultrasonic test was compared according to defect species. And the amounts of damage on impacted zone wert compared according to impact energy on two type test specimens. At results, Ultrasonic test was more effective to detect delamination and Penetrant X-ray test was more effective to detect matrix crack and fiber fracture. There were some differences in defect shapes and grades according to lay-up patterns and degrees, and the trend appeared that matrix crack, delamination, fiber fracture occured and increasing defects sizes according to increasing impact energy.

PURPOSES: The problem under this circumstance is that the erosion not only drops strength of the steel dowel bar but also comes with volume expansion of the steel dowel bar which can reduce load transferring efficiency of the steel dowel bar. To avoid this erosion problem, alternative dowers bars are developed. METHODS: In this study, the bearing stresses between the FRP tube dowel bar and concrete slab are calculated and compared with its allowable bearing stress to check its structural stability in the concrete pavement. These comparisons are conducted with several cross-sections of FRP tube dowel bars. Comprehensive laboratory tests including the shear load-deflection test on a full-scale specimen and the full-scale accelerated joint concrete pavement test are conducted and the results were compared with those from the steel dowel bar. RESULTS: In all cross-sections of FRP tube dowel bars, computed bearing stresses between the FRP tube dowel bar and concrete slab are less than their allowable stress levels. The pultrusion FRP-tube dowel bar show better performance on direct shear tests on full-scale specimen and static compression tests at full-scale concrete pavement joints than prepreg and filament-winding FRP-tube dowel bar. CONCLUSIONS: The FRP tube dowel bars as alternative dowel bar are invulnerable to erosion that may be caused by moisture from masonry joint or bottom of the pavement system. Also, the pultrusion FRP-tube dowel bar performed very well on the laboratory evaluation.
