  • Diesel engines exhaust much more NOx(Nitrogen Oxides) and PM(Particulate Matter) than gasoline engines, and it is not easy to reduce both NOx and PM simultaneously because of the trade-off relation between two components. This study investigated flame characteristics of the partial premixed compression ignition known as new combustion method which can reduce NOx and PM simultaneously. The investigation was performed through the analysis of the flame images taken by a high speed camera from the visible engine which is the modified single cylinder diesel engine. The results obtained through this investigation are summarized as follows; (1) The area of the luminous yellow flame was reduced due to the decrease of flame temperature and even distribution of temperature. (2) The darkish yellow flame zone caused by the shortage of the remaining oxygen after the middle stage of combustion was considerably reduced. (3) Since the ignition delay was shortened, the violent combustion did not occur and the combustion duration became shortened.

  • In this study the predictions of NOx in methane-air lean premixed combustion in PSR were carried out with GRI 3.0 methane-air combustion mechanism and Zeldovich, nitrous oxide, prompt, and NNH NO formation mechanism by using CHEMKIN code. The results are compared to the JSR experimental data of Rutar for the validation of the model. This study concerns about the importance of the chemical pathways. The chemical pathway most likely to form the NO in methane-air lean-premixed combustion was investigated. The results obtained with the 4 different NO mechanisms for residence time(0.5-1.6ms) and pressure(3, 4.7, 6.5 atm) are compared and discussed.

  • The effect of reentrant type bowl geometry on combustion characteristics was investigated in a D.I. diesel engine. The main factor was the aspect ratio (Bowl Diameter / Bowl Depth) of bowl of combustion chamber, and the cylinder pressure, engine performance and emissions of the engine using the 4 kinds of the combustion chamber were meadured. Also, the combustion characteristics compared of the experimented and the calculated values which is used by the Hiroyasu's combustion model. The results are as follows; The effect of $d_c/H$ on ignition delay period are small. The smoke is corerelated to the heat release of the premixed and the diffusion combustion, i.g, the smoke decreased by decreasing the premixed combustion or increasing the diffusion combustion on cumulative heat release. The premixed combustion process has more effect than the diffusion combustion on smoke. The formal tendency of $d_c/H$ on engine performance has not appear.

  • The combustion instability acts as a serious obstacle for the lean premixed combustion of gas turbine and even causes the fatal damage to the combustor and whole system. In this experiment, the pressure fluctuation is highly related to the stabilizing position of flame and fuel injection location. The fuel injection location is connected with the convection time of the fresh mixture, which is important time scale to refresh the mixtures near the flame stabilization location. The flame is extremely unstable when the alternative stabilization occurs and bulk mode frequency (${\sim}10Hz$) of pressure fluctuation is observed in this condition. It was found that the convection time scale of the fresh reactant coincided with the time scale of the bulk mode fluctuation. Hence this phenomenon results from the local equivalence ratio change caused by the pressure fluctuation induced by thermo-acoustic effects.

  • The effect of swirl flow structures on combustion dynamics of two interacting, lean-premixed flames was experimentally investigated, with a particular emphasis on swirl numbers and swirl rotational directions. Our results show that the amplitude of limit cycle oscillations is very sensitive to the combination of swirl numbers and rotational directions, while the instability frequency remains nearly unchanged. The counter-rotating cases show significantly lower pressure perturbations, and this behavior appears to be related to the formation of compact interacting zone with higher heat release rate, indicating the presence of increased flame surface wrinkling caused by intense turbulence.

  • The availability of the thermal energy has been deeply recognized recently to encourage the cascade usage of thermal energy from combustion. Within the frame work, a 1 kW class Stirling engine based cogeneration system has been proposed for a unit of a distributed energy system. The capacity has been designed to be adequate for the domestic usage, which requires high compactness as well as low emission and noised. To develop a highly efficient system with satisfying these requirements, a premixed slot flame burner has been proposed and a series of numerical simulation has been performed to establish a design tool for the combustion chamber. The thermal radiation model has been found to highly affect the computational results and a proper resolution to analyze the heat transfer characteristics of the high temperature heat exchanger. Finally, the combustion characteristics of the premixed flame with the metal fiber type burner has been studied.

  • The purpose of the present investigation is to examine the effect of water addition on combustion efficieny. In this research, fuel and additive water are injected into a burner in the form of vapors through separate needle valves, the flame temperature and concentrations of soot, CO and unburned hydrocarbons were measured in a premixed flame. The results are obtained to be: In the fuel lean region, the reduction rate of CO, soot and HC by water injection increases slightly, but there is no change in the combustion efficiency. On the other hand, in the fuel rich region, the reduction rate of CO, Soot and HC by water injection increases more than that of the fuel lean region. Accordingly, combustion efficiency increases.

  • This study has numerically investigated the combustion processes in the bilayer porous media. To account for the velocity transition and diffusion influenced by solid matrix, porosity effects are included in the governing equations. Heat transfer coefficient is calculated by Nusselt number to reflect the effect of gas velocity, pore diameter, and material properties. Numerical results indicate that the present approach is capable of the essential features of the premixed combustion in the porous burner, in terms of the precised flame structure, pollutant formation, and flame stabilization. It is also found that heat transferred from the downstream flame zone is conducted to the upstream flame region through the solid matrix and the preheated mixture. By increasing the inlet velocity, the solid temperature of upstream is cooling down.
