  • This paper presents motion based design methodology for structures. Current design methodologies are primarily strength-based. Such methods are adequate when strength is expected to govern the design. But as the slenderness of structures increases, motion such as displacement and acceleration becomes the dominant criterion. In this paper, a preliminary design approach for beam-type buildings, where motion dominates the design, is discussed by effectively distributing the magnitude of structural stiffness to control the distribution of displacement under service load. This analytic development is illustrated using a cantilever beam as the structure under static loads, free vibration, and forced vibration.

  • Seismic isolation has developed to the point where it may be considered as a viable design alternate for a wide range of building structures. However, it needs to consider various aspects to adopt a suitable isolation system for buildings practically. This report presents the basis for the preliminary design procedure which has been developed for the seismic isolation system using the lead rubber bearings. The design procedures have been developed to ensure that the bearings will safely support the maximum gravity load throughout the life of the structure while they provide a period shift and hysteretic damping during the design earthquake.

  • This study has began to develop a method for the student major in visual communication and media design to allow them approach to digital contents design developing process in easier and more effective way. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential significance of developing analogue contents design as one of the preliminary works in the digital contents design developing process. The results revealed that designing analogue contents as one of the preliminary works of the digital contents design is: Firstly, it reduces students' mental pressure in organizing the structure of overall information clusters at the phase of information architecture. Secondly, it helps students to find out the object and the preferable form of information design intuitively in the process of information design. Lastly, it is helpful for students to understand the characteristics of digital contents design through clarifying the differences between analogue contents design and digital contents design.

  • The congestion of railway vehicle and station shows up to 220%. Especially, transfer resistance of passenger increase rapidly by the collision of circulation. So increment of travel time, occurrence of safety accidents act as a factor that inhibits the utilization of urban railway station. In this paper, to improve traveling speed and comfort of urban rail passengers, urban transit passenger guidance system using congestion management model is proposed. The congestion management model that can mitigate a recurring/non-recurring congestion is constructed and the preliminary design of the system (middleware system, control system, guidance drive system) is carried out. Passenger Guidance System is configured by step for changing the external data into a form usable by the algorithm, step to perform the congestion management algorithm using the real-time data and historical data, step to control device based on the value that is calculated by congestion management algorithm, step to drive the device based on the information in the control system and circulation guidance devices. In the future, detail design will be performed based on the preliminary design. A prototype of the various devices according to the station structures and locations will be made. The control module of guidance device will be developed.

  • The preliminary design and performance test were carried out for determining dimensions of gas turbine combustor. The combustor design program was developed and applied to design our combustor, and the specific dimensions for swirler, dome and liner holes were determined by the semiempirical manner. Based on the first performance test data, the swirl angle governing the combustion characteristics of primary combustor zone was determined as 40 deg.. Using the second performance test data, the swirler dimensions were readjusted by 24 mm i.d., 34 mm o.d., and swirl angle of 45 deg.. The geometry of liner holes were determined by considering the flame stability and recirculation zone size. It was found that flame can be more easily stabilized by adjusting the swirler dimensions rather than liner holes. The geometry of swirler and liner holes were readjusted by using the final performance test data with dilution holes. Also, the combustor performance and emission characteristics were evaluated by analysis of exhaust gases.

  • This study is a preliminary study to develop design guidelines on shared spaces of apartment for healthy housing. It was tried to set the basic direction of the guideline development by comparing and analyzing related literatures based on the previously identified evaluation indicators of healthy housing of apartment. The major findings were as followings: 1) based on the research conducted before, the characters of shared spaces for healthy housing were classified as physical, mental and social dimensions. 2) According to the comparison and analysis of relevant standards and guidelines, focuses were mostly on the physical dimension, particularly on the human traffic lines of the convenience attributes. Other focuses were on the attractiveness of the apartment complex of the vitality attribute under the mental dimension, and community facilities of the residential stability attributes under the social dimension. Therefore, it was identified that it is required to take complementary measure regarding mental and social dimensions, and design concrete steps to include different attributes of each dimension, in order to develop comprehensive guidelines for shared space.

  • Unlike structures in the air, the vibration analysis of a submerged or floating structure such as offshore structures or ships is possible only when the fluid-structure interaction is understood, as the whole or part of the structure is in contact with water. Specially, the importance of the added mass is not necessary to say like the submerged vehicle, all of the hull body, is positioned in the water. This paper introduce two method to find natural frequency in consideration of fluid-structure modal coupled vibration analysis. The purpose of this study is to analyze of the vibration characteristic of submerged vehicle to obtain the anti-vibration design data, which could be used in the preliminary design stage data. Underwater pressure hull of submerged vehicle is used as the model of this study. The F.E.M model is meshed by shell and beam element. Also, considering of the inner hull weight, mass element is distributed in the direction of hull length. Numerical calculations are accomplished using the commercial B.E.M code. The characteristics of natural frequency(eigenvalues), mode shape(eigenvectors) and frequency-displacement response are analyzed. The results of this study will be used as the useful design data in preliminary anti-vibration design stage.

  • Low NPSH and high pressure pumps are widely used for turbopump systems, which have an inducer and operate at high rotating speeds In this paper, a meanline method has been established for the preliminary design and performance prediction of pumps having an inducer for cavitating or non-cavitating conditions and at design or off-design points. The method was applied for the performance prediction of a fuel pump, which had been developed by Hyundai Mobis in collaboration with KeRC for a liquid rocket engine. The engine uses liquid methane and liquid oxygen as working fluids and rotates at 50,000 rpm KeRC carried out a model testing of the fuel pump with water as a working fluid at the reduced speed (10,000 ${\~}$ 15,000 rpm). Predicted performances by the method are shown to be in good agreement with experimental results for cavitating and non-cavitating conditions. The established meanline method can be used for the performance prediction and preliminary design of high speed pumps which have a inducer, impeller and volute.

  • This study showed the development process of structural design method of BHB(Blast Hardened Bulkhead) which are applicable in preliminary design stage. In the previous 1st report, the simplified structural scantling equations of BHB were formulated theoretically using the modified plastic hinge method supplemented by considering the membrane effects due to large plastic deformation. And the scantling methodology of plate thickness and section area of stiffeners of the curtain plate type BHB was dealt with. In the present 2nd report, derivation process of the correction factors which can adjust the developed scantling equations considering the uncertainties contained in the design parameters was introduced. Considering the actual BHB structures of 3 warship, the correction factors for the developed scantling equations for curtain plate type BHB were derived. Finally the applicability, validity of them and the strategy of future improvement were considered.

  • Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is widely used for retrofitting concrete structures for various purposes. Especially, for the retrofitting of concrete structures subjected to blast loads, FRP is proven to be a very effective retrofitting material. However, a systematic design procedure to implement FRP for concrete structure retrofitting against blast loads does not exist currently. In addition, in case of concrete structures with inarticulate geometrical boundary conditions such as arch structures, an effective analysis technique is needed to obtain reliable results based on minimal analytical assumptions. Therefore, in this study, a systematic and efficient blast analysis procedure for FRP retrofitting design of concrete arch structure is suggested. The procedure is composed of three sequential parts of preliminary analysis, breach and debris analysis, and retrofit-material analysis. Based on the suggested procedure, blast analyses are carried out by using explicit code, LS-DYNA. The study results are discussed in detail.
