This study was performed as a preliminary experiment to develop functional feed additives using by-products generated during the production of black garlic. Therefore antioxidant and immune enhancing activity of black garlic pomace were measured. As a result of measuring the antioxidant activity of black garlic pomace, it was found antioxidant activity. Nitric oxide (NO) assay was performed to test the immune enhancing activity of vegetable samples including black garlic pomace among the samples used in the experiment. As a result of the NO assay experiment, highest concentrations of black garlic pomace, aster glehni, and MIX form produced NO, which Garlic pomace (69.4%), aster glehni (35.9%), and MIX (45.3%), respectively, compared to LPS (100%). In conclusion, it is considered that black garlic pomace contains an anti-inflammatory effect, and if the optimal mixing ratio of black garlic pomace and aster glehni is selected, it will be of sufficient value as a feed additive containing an anti-inflammatory effect.

The complete genome sequence of a Gram-positive bacterium .Bacillus subtilis has recently been reported and it is now clear that more than 50% of its ORFs have no known function (1). To study the global gene expression in B. subtilis at single gene resolution, we have tested the glass DNA microarrays in a step-wise fashion. As a preliminary experiment, we have created arrays of PCR products for 14 ORF whose transcription patterns have been well established through transcriptional mapping analysis. We measured changes in mRNA transcript levels between early exponential and stationary phase by hybridizing fluorescently labeled cDNA (with Cy3-UTP and Cy5-UTP) onto the array. We then compared the microarray data to confirm that the transcription patterns of these genes are well consistent with the known Northern analysis data. Since the preliminary test has been successful, we scaled up the experiments to ${\sim}$94% of the 4,100 annotated ORFs for the complete genome sequence of B. subtilis. Using this whole genomic microarray, we searched genes that are catabolite-repressive and those that are under the control of ${\sigma}^{Y}$, one of the functionally unknown ECF sigma factors. From these results, we here report that we have established DNA microarray techniques that are applicable for the whole genome of B. subtilis.

As a preliminary study for detection techniques of $CO_2$ gas bubble plumes, we have conducted a comparative experiment on artificially generated $CO_2$ gas bubbles plume by using multibeam echosounder (MBES), single beam echosounder (SBES), and sub-bottom profiler (SBP). The rising speed of artificial gas bubbles is higher than references because of compulsory release of compressed gas in the tank. Compared to single beam acoustic equipments, the MBES detects wide swath coverage. It provides exact determination of the source position and 3D information on the gas bubble plumes in the water column. Therefore, it is shown that MBES can distinctly detect gas bubble plumes compared to single beam acoustic equipments. We can establish more effective complementary detection technique by simultaneous operation of MBES and SBES. Consequently, it contributes to improve qualitative and quantitative detection techniques by understanding the acoustic characteristics of the specific gas bubbles.

This is a preliminary animal experiment for development of the electronic ears for deaf patients. In 10 Guinea Pigs'ears, we have measured the changes of cochlear microphonics (CM) for Pure sound after application of 100dB white noise sound and NaCl crystal. In response to white noise sound, the amplitude of cochlear microphonics for pure sound has decreased by 30% in 30 minutes, then it has recovered to its initial control amplitude in 90minutes. In NaCl crystal application, the amplitude of cochlear microphonics for pure sound has decriased by 50% in 15minutes and has remained at reduced level. Also, the deaf Guinea Pig shows a motion reflex for sound when we apply electrical signals similar to cochlear microphonics to the electrodes located in the round window of the inner ear.

As the wafer geometric requirements continuously complicated and minutes in tens of nanometers, the expectation of real-time add-on sensors for in-situ plasma process monitoring is rapidly increasing. Various industry applications, utilizing plasma impedance monitor (PIM) and optical emission spectroscopy (OES), on etch end point detection, etch chemistry investigation, health monitoring, fault detection and classification, and advanced process control are good examples. However, process monitoring in semiconductor manufacturing industry requires non-invasiveness. The hypothesis behind the optical monitoring of plasma induced ion current is for the monitoring of plasma induced charging damage in non-invasive optical way. In plasma dielectric via etching, the bombardment of reactive ions on exposed conductor patterns may induce electrical current. Induced electrical charge can further flow down to device level, and accumulated charges in the consecutive plasma processes during back-end metallization can create plasma induced charging damage to shift the threshold voltage of device. As a preliminary research for the hypothesis, we performed two phases experiment to measure the plasma induced current in etch environmental condition. We fabricated electrical test circuits to convert induced current to flickering frequency of LED output, and the flickering frequency was measured by high speed optical plasma monitoring system (OPMS) in 10 kHz. Current-frequency calibration was done in offline by applying stepwise current increase while LED flickering was measured. Once the performance of the test circuits was evaluated, a metal pad for collecting ion bombardment during plasma etch condition was placed inside etch chamber, and the LED output frequency was measured in real-time. It was successful to acquire high speed optical emission data acquisition in 10 kHz. Offline measurement with the test circuitry was satisfactory, and we are continuously investigating the potential of real-time in-situ plasma induce current measurement via OPMS.

The development of teaching models to strengthen practical education and actively participate in the classes of students is now required in recent education situations. This study examined the participation and satisfaction level of students' classes after applying a teaching model-integrated hospital and school laboratory (named L2L). A total of 33 students who took the subject of a clinical microbiology experiments were involved in this study. Each group representative participating in a pre-class field exercise in the hospital microbiology laboratory was asked to conduct the experiment. After applying the L2L teaching models, the academic self-efficacy ($2.87{\pm}0.58{\rightarrow}3.38{\pm}0.55$), class participation ($2.60{\pm}0.92{\rightarrow}3.62{\pm}0.78$), and class satisfaction ($2.48{\pm}1.01{\rightarrow}3.85{\pm}0.87$) increased significantly (P<0.05). This means that pre-class field exercises created interest in the student's class and boosted self-confidence, leading to increased participation and satisfaction for the class. In conclusion, the L2L teaching model is an effective teaching method to enhance the practical training for preliminary clinical laboratory technologists.
We present the performance test results of VLBI Correlation Subsystem (VCS) trial product which was being developed for 1 year from August 2007. It is a core component of Korea-Japan Joint VLBI Correlator (KJJVC). The aim for developing VCS trial product is to improve the performance of VCS main product to reduce the efforts and cost, and to solve the design problems by performing the preliminary test of the manufactured trial product. The function of VCS trial product is that it is able to process the 2 stations-1 baseline, 8 Gbps/station speed, 1.2 Gbps output speed with FX-type. VCS trial product consists of Read Data Control Board (RDC), Fourier Transform Board (FTB), and Correlation and Accumulation Board (CAB). Almost main functions are integrated in the FTB and CAB board. In order to confirm the performance of VCS trial product functions, the spectral analysis, delay compensation and correlation processing experiments were carried out by using simulation and real observation data. We found that the overflow problem of re-quantization after FFT processing was occurred in the delay compensation experiment. We confirmed that this problem was caused by valid bit-expression of the re-quantized data. To solve this problem, the novel method will be applied to VCS main product. The effectiveness of VCS trial product has been verified through the preliminary experimental results, but the overflow problem was occurred.
Electrochemical reaction utilizing the semiconducting photoanodes can be applied to the photoelectrolysis of water to produce hydrogen. In this preliminary experiment, $TiO_2$ photoanodes were prepared by sintering anatase-$TiO_2$ powder at $1,250^{\circ}C$ and thermal oxidizing titanium plate at $850^{\circ}C$ in air and oxygen, respectively. Their surface structures were observed by XRD and optical microscope. I-E characteristics of thermally oxidized $TiO_2$ photoanode were also investigated under illuminated and dark conditions using 1 N and 0.1 N NaOH electrolyte solutions.

The proposed virtual laboratory system for digital logic circuits is composed of two main sessions, which are concept-learning session and virtual experiment session by virtual digital kit. During concept-learning session the learners can easily understand the important principles in the digital circuits to be performed. In addition, during virtual laboratory session the virtual experiments are performed by assembling and connecting the circuits on the virtual bread board, applying input voltages, making the output measurements, and comparing and transmitting the virtual experimental data. Every activity done during the virtual laboratory session is recorded on database and will be provided with the learners as a preliminary report form including personal information. Thus, the educators may check out the submitted preliminary report to estimate how well the learners understand the circuit operations. Finally, in order to show the validity of our virtual laboratory system we investigated and analysed the damage rate of real experimental equipment during class and assessed student performance on the five quizzes for one semester.
The purpose of the current experiment was to describe interlimb coordination when swing limb conditions are being manipulated by constraining step length or by adding a 5 or 10 pound weight to the swing limb distally. Subjects were asked to begin walking with the right limb to land on the primary target (normal step length) that is 10 cm in diameter. However, if, during movement, the light was illuminated, then the subject had to step on one of the secondary targets (long and short step length). These three step length conditions were repeated while wearing a 5 pound ankle weight and then when wearing a 10 pound ankle weight. Ground reaction force (GRF) data indicated that there were changes in the forces and slopes of the swing and stance Fx GRFs. Long stepping subjects had to increase the propulsive force required to increase step length. Consequently, swing and stance toe-off greatly increased in the long step length condition. Short step length subjects had to adequately adjust step length, which decreased the speed of gait initiation. Loading the swing limb decreased the force and slope of the swing limb. Swing and stance toe-off was longest for the long step length condition, but there was a small difference of temporal events between no weight and weight condition. It appears that subjects modulated GRFs and temporal events differently to achieve the peak acceleration force of the swing and stance limb in response to different tasks. The findings from the current study provide preliminary data, which can be used to further investigate how we modulate forces during voluntary movement from a quiet stance. This information may be important if we are to use this or a similar task to evaluate gait patterns of the elderly and patient populations.
