  • A typical VOD service allows that a number of remote clients playback a desired video from a large collection of videos stored in one or more video servers. The main bottleneck for a VOD service is the network bandwidth connecting to the VOD server to the client due to the high bandwidth requirements. Many previous researches have shown that VOD server can be greatly improved through the use of multicast, broadcast, or P2P scheme. Broadcast is one of the most efficient techniques because it can transmit a stream to many users without additional network bandwidth. But the broadcast has long latency time. In order to overcome the drawback, in this paper, we propose P2Prefix broadcast scheme that can solve the service latency time, which is the problem of broadcast scheme, by using P2P caching as well as minimizing the client buffer requirement.

  • The main bottleneck for large scale VOD systems is bandwidth of storage or network I/O due to the large number of client requests simultaneously, and then efficient techniques are required to solve the bottleneck problem of the VOD system. Patching is one of the most efficient techniques to overcome the bottleneck of the VOD system through the use of multicast scheme. In this paper, we propose a new patching scheme, called P2P proxy patching, for improving the typical patching technique by jointly using the prefix caching and P2P proxy. In our proposed scheme, each client plays a role in a proxy to multicast a regular stream to other clients that request the same video stream. Due to the use of the P2P proxy and the prefix caching, the client requests that ive out of the patching window range can receive the regular stream from other clients in the previous patching group without allocating the new regular channels from the VOD server to the clients. In the performance study, we show that our patching scheme can reduce the server bandwidth requirement about $33\%$ less than that of the existing patching technique with respect to prefix size and request interval.

  • In this paper, we propose a proxy caching scheme that stores a portion of a continuous media object or an entire object on the Internet. The proxy stores the initial fraction of a continuous media object and determines the optimal size of the initial fraction of the continuous media object to be cached based on the object popularity. Under the proposed scheme, the initial latency of most clients and the data transferred from a remote server can be reduced and limited cache storage space can be utilized efficiently. Considering the characteristics of continuous media, we also propose the novel popularity for the continuous media objects based on the amount of the data of each object played by the clients. Finally, we have performed trace-driven simulations to evaluate our caching scheme and the popularity for the continuous media objects. Through these simulations, we have verified that our caching scheme, PPC outperforms other well-known caching schemes in terms of BHR, DSR and replacement and that popularity for the continuous media objects based on the amount of the playback data can enhance the performance of caching scheme.

  • The increasing popularity of multimedia streaming services introduces new challenges in content distribution. Especially, it is important to provide the QoS guarantees as they are increasingly expected to support the multimedia applications. The service providers can improve the performance of multimedia streaming by caching the initial segment (prefix) of the popular streams at proxies near the requesting clients. The proxy can initiate transmission to the client while requesting the remainder of the stream from the server. In this paper, in order to apply the prefix caching service based on IETF's RTSP environment to the wireless networks, we propose the effective RTSP handling scheme that can adapt to the radio situation in wireless network and reduce the cutting phenomenon. Also, we propose the traffic based caching algorithm (TSLRU) to improve the performance of caching proxy. TSLRU classifies the traffic into three types, and improve the performance of caching proxy by reflecting the several elements such as traffic types, recency, frequency, object size when performing the replacement decision. In simulation, TSLRU and RTSP handling scheme performs better than the existing schemes in terms of byte hit rate, hit rate, startup latency, and throughput.

  • This paper presents a scalable caching algorithm of proxy server with the finite storage size minimizing client's buffer size and constant-bit-rate channel bandwidth. Under the general video traffic condition, it is observed that the amount of decreased client's buffer size and channel bandwidth after caching a video frame depends on the relative frame position in the time axis as the frame size. Based on this fact, we propose an effective caching algorithm to select the cached frames by using the normalized buffer size. Finally, experimental results are provided to show the superior performance of the proposed alghrithm.

  • The increasing popularity of multimedia streaming services introduces new challenges in content distribution. Especially, it is important to provide the QoS guarantees as they are increasingly expected to support the multimedia applications. Multimedia streams typically experience the high start-up delay due to the large protocol overhead, the delay, and the loss properties of the wireless networks. The service providers can improve the performance of multimedia streaming by caching the initial segment (prefix) of the popular streams at proxies near the requesting clients. The proxy can initiate transmission to the client while requesting the remainder of the stream from the server. In this paper, we propose the traffic based caching algorithm (TSLRU) to improve the performance of caching proxy.

  • According to recent report, global mobile data traffic is expected to increase by 11 times from 2016 to 2020. Moreover, this growth is expected to be driven mainly by mobile video traffic which is expected to account for about 70% of the total mobile data traffic. To cope with enormous mobile traffic, we need to understand video traffic's characteristic. Recently, the repetitive requests of some popular content such as popular YouTube videos cause a enormous network traffic overheads. If we constitute a network with the nodes capable of content caching based on the content popularity, we can reduce the network overheads by using the cached content for every request. Through device-to-device, multicast, and helpers, the video throughput can improve about 1.5~2 times and prefix caching reduces the playback delay by about 0.2~0.5 times than the conventional method. In this paper, we introduce some recent work on content popularity-based caching techniques in wireless networks.

  • In P2P distribution mobile networks, QoS of streaming media services are under heavy influence from overheads such as congestion, latency, and interference. The problem is further complicated by the fact that the popularity of media objects changes over time. This paper proposes a new FSMS+ (Fuzzy Similarity-based Multi-level Streaming Scheme) which minimizes performance degradation of streaming services due to overhead. We then utilize fuzzy similarity-based relevance that can dynamically stream the streaming media object with minimum overhead. The simulation result showed that the proposed scheme has better performance in retransmission rate, congestion control rate and latency rate than the other existing methods of distance method, DC (disk caching) method, and prefix method.
