  • As culture technology is recognized as the important element of national industry, the necessity of the related policy development for enhancement of culture technology is magnified. In this study, we use conjoint analysis to investigate how the researchers from industry and academia think differently on the importance of several attributes in government-supported culture technology research project such as research period, size of research fund, inter-affiliated research requirement and interdisciplinary research requirement, and preference on those attribute levels. Also, we describes how a simulation experiment is designed to simulate participation shares of four alternative hypothetical research project profiles. This study will help establish the more effective policy of the national research program by understanding the preferential differences between industry and academia on the research project attributes.

  • This study aimed to investigate the preferences for the particular menu depend upon a purpose of the events and a time slot. The study set the 16 imaginary profile of 5 selective attributes by using Conjoint Analysis for the customers who ate out at the grilled beef restaurant. The result showed that most significant factors of preference were a sirloin, Korean beef, a traditional interior design, a rice menu and the amount of marbling, in that order. In addition, the study revealed a high level of relative importance depend on the parts of meat cuts and the most preferred factor of the general customers was a sirloin in selective attributes. Next, the country of origin was important. All events showed the highest preference in the parts of meat cuts like the whole consumer group and there was a high partial value in sirloin for the purpose of the events. However, the prime ribs showed a higher level of relative importance when the customers had light meals or they participated in conferences. At the preference analysis of the important attributes and the level of partial value, the most significant factors were a sirloin, a country of origin, a traditional interior design, a rice menu, and the amount of marbling, in that order both in lunch and dinner. In addition, the study found that the parts of meat, the atmosphere in the restaurant, the quality of beef, dessert, and the country of origin were significant in order at relative importance.

  • Dynamic robust design has been regarded as the most powerful design methodology for improving product quality, Dynamic SN ratio adopted in dynamic robust design combines two major quality attributes, the variability around the linear function and the slope of the linear function, into a single design metric. The principal shortcoming associated with the dynamic SN ratio is that the metric is independent of designer's preferences for the quality attributes due to priori sets of attribute tradeoff values inherent in it. Therefore, a more rigorous preferencebased design metric to accurately capture designer's intent and preference is needed. A new design metric that can be used in dynamic robust design is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed design metric is examined with the aid of a demonstrative case study and the results are discussed.

  • Engineering design can be viewed as a decision making process, which involves the nonlinear tradeoffs task among the multiple conflicting attributes and considers the robustness of design. In order to obtain best engineering design, methodology for accurate assessment of his/her preference about the multiple attributes is required. Conventionally, intuitive procedures based on lottery questions are used to elicit the designer's preference structure: however, they can lead to inconsistent and inexact preference results due to the rank reversal problems derived from the designer's big cognitive burden. In this paper, alternatively, a design methodology based on multiattribute utility function through the pairwise comparison among alternatives is presented. The proposed procedure is applied to an actual injection mold design with the aid of the CAE simulation and the result is discussed.

  • Entering into the new millennium, the Korean wine market has recorded the highest growth rate among the domestic alcoholic beverage market and been recognized as a rapidly emerging market with further escalation potential. Responding to the current drastic escalation of Korean wine market in terms of its volume, the present study scrutinizes the considerable wine-selection attributes that are related to individual wine consumer‘s characteristics including demographic variables. These attributes are also expected to be precursors of wine consumers‘ satisfaction. ANOVA results suggest that each demographical variable-gender, age, income level, and the frequency of wine consumption-pertains to specific wine-selection attribute(s). Likewise, wine consumers‘ characteristics are also associated with those attributes. As wine consumers are experienced, they rely less on information; rather, their selections tend to be dependent upon quality, value, contexts, and preferences. The subsequent multiple-regression investigating the relationship between wine-selection attributes and satisfaction signifies that quality, contexts, and preference attributes are the substantial antecedents of wine consumers‘ satisfaction. When consumers purchase a wine, "information on purchase" was the most important criterion for the Newcomers and the Outsiders, while the Connoisseurs mainly depended on "marketability", "wine values" and "viticulture environment". "Preference" attributes influenced the Aspirants the most in buying decision. The Newcomers and the Outsiders need more information before deciding to purchase as their wine knowledge was very limited. The Connoisseurs were likely to consider the quality as a more important factor than the price and it is necessary to develop high quality wine at a reasonable price in order to attract this group.

  • Seolleongtang, a traditional broth in Korea, is expected to become a hot global item for its unique flavor and healthiness. In this study, the correlations between sensory attributes and physicochemical characteristics were studied for the popular seolleongtang stock products through descriptive analysis, sensory evaluation and analysis of salt, soluble solid, protein, viscosity and color for the quality control. Our results indicate that color, concentration, viscosity, and freshness are important attributes in evaluating the quality of seolleongtang stock. There were significant differences between preference and sensory attributes among the stock products. Significant correlations were found between flavor and texture and overall acceptability, as well as beany odor and aroma. Preference and physicochemical aspects also correlated, and indicate that a range of salt, solubility, and viscosity are applicable as quality control factors in seollengtang stock.

  • This study evaluated the perception, consumption behavior, and optional attributes of Korean, Chinese, and U.S. consumers of energy bar products. Data were compared and analyzed by surveying 300 consumers in each country. Significant differences were observed in preference for energy bars according to their nationality, in the order China, the U.S., and Korea. Perception of taste, types and dietary suitability of the products ranked lower for Korean consumers, as compared to consumers of the United States and China. The order dietary fiber, protein, and calcium were the sought-after nutritional requirements of the products. The demand for protein was significantly higher in the U.S. Calcium demand was low in the United States and China, but was very high in Korea, which could be attributed to the low calcium intake of Koreans. Other optional attributes which were closely associated with the purchase and re-purchase decision, included price, taste and delivery period. All three factors were recognized as important options in Korea, whereas awareness of packaging/appearance and brand was not. The taste, nutrients and price in the U.S. ranked high as important optional attributes, while the packaging, external and expiration dates were recognized as low. Unlike Korea and the U.S., important optional attributes for Chinese consumers were determined in the order expiration date, taste, and nutrients, and showed low perception for packaging, appearance, weight, counts, and prices. Evaluating the preference for the main and secondary ingredients, Koreans preferred nuts over grains, Americans preferred dried fruits over nuts, and Chinese preferred nuts and grains; both Korean and American consumers had low preference for dried vegetables. The preference for chocolate was low in Korea and China, whereas preference for jelly was high in China as compared to Korea and the U.S. The intention of purchasing energy bars was significantly lower in Korea than in the U.S. and China. A variety of nutritious functional bars have recently been distributed and sold in Korea, but they are mostly produced in the U.S., which is the largest producer and consumer worldwide. Taken together, results of this study indicate that the demand for nutritional enhancement and preferred materials vary according to the nationality. Hence, it is necessary to develop products that reflect these criteria. Further research is required to analyze the relationship between preference and consumption behavior for each material product developed in the future.
