Characteristics Evaluation of Surface Roughness with Ultra Precision Machining (초정밀 절삭가공에서 표면 거칠기 특성 평가)

  • In this study, experiments were conducted with an ultra-precision machine, developed in domestic, to find the characteristics and the most suitable cutting conditions of ultra-precision machining. To maximize the performance of the machine, the machine was installed in a room that is protected from vibration and is maintained constant temperature and constant humidity. Selected work pieces are an aluminum-alloyed material, which has excellent corrosion resistance and has low deformation. The used tool is synthetic poly crystal diamond, which has excellent abrasion resistance and has low affinity. Four types of tool nose radius were used such as 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4mm. Machining is performed with cutting speed of 500, 800 and 1000m/min., feed rate of 0.005, 0.008, 0.010mm/rev. and cutting depth of 0.0005, 0.0025 and 0.005mm respectively which can generally be used in the field as a cutting condition. As a method of evaluation, surface roughness was measured for each cutting condition, and reciprocal characteristics are computed for each tool nose radius, cutting speed, feed rate and cutting depth. As a result, the most suitable cutting condition and characteristics of ultra-precision machining were identified which can usefully be applied in the industrial field.

A Dual-mode Pico-positioning System using Active Aerostatic Coupling

  • This paper proposes a dual-mode ultra precision positioning system for machine tools and measuring machines. The objective was to position a machine table with a picometer order of resolution, i.e., pico-positioning. A twist-roller friction drive (TFD) was used in coarse-mode positioning. The TFD, which was driven by an AC servomotor, is a kind of lead screw in mechanical terms, and several centimeters of machine table movement was controlled with a nanometer order of positioning resolution. To eliminate lateral vibration caused by the TFD, an active aerostatic coupling driven by piezoelectric actuators was inserted between the TFD and the machine table. This active aerostatic coupling was also applied as a feed drive device for fine-mode positioning; in the fine mode, the positioning resolution was 50 pm. Factors influencing pico-positioning, such as how noise from displacement sensors and vibrations in the aerostatic guideway affect positioning resolution, are discussed.

  • This paper describes the on-machine surface form evaluation of an ultra-precision cylinder for the fabrication by the compensation process. In this study, the surface form error of an ultra-precision cylinder, which was fabricated by the ultra-precision diamond turning machine with a single diamond cutting tool, was evaluated by using two capacitance-type displacement probes. Based on the measurement results, the compensation process was conducted. Since the measurement was carried out on the machine without re-mounting of the workpiece, additional fabrication for compensation process can be conducted precisely.

  • To obtain the surface roughness with range from 10nm to 1nm we need the study of ultra-precision machine, cutting condition, and materials. In this paper, the optimal cutting conditions for getting mirror surface of aluminum alloy have been examined experimentally by using ultra-precision turning machine and sing1e crystal diamond tool. In generally, the cutting conditions such as feed rate and depth of cut have effect on the surface roughness in ultra-precision turning. The result of surface roughness was measured by the ZYGO New View 200. Therefore, The surface roughness and cutting conditions has been clarified. The smooth surface of aluminum alloy less than 1nm RMS, 1nm Rmax can be obtained by the ultra-precision cutting.

  • To control internal temperature distribution of moulding machine is very important in molding products such as Polycabonate. Nylon and PVDF. In this experiment, we developed temperature measurement system in order to control temperature of moulding machine. It was measured by telemetering system because of rotational mechanism. Form experimental results, it was sufficient to apply to moulding machine under 250 .deg C.
