  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to improve portion size estimation aids (PSEAs) used in the nutrition survey of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and validate the accuracy and precision of the newly developed aids. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We conducted intensive interviews with survey experts in KNHANES and consulted with experts to collect opinions about improvement of PSEAs. Based on the results of the interviews, 5 types of PSEAs (rice bowl, earthen pots, mounds, measuring spoons, and thickness sticks) were newly developed using 3-dimensional (3D) modeling or modification of color or shape. Validation tests were conducted with 96 adults 20 years old or older. For the rice bowl and earthen pots, the participants were asked to select the more similar PSEA in size after being shown the real dishes. For the mounds, measuring spoons, and thickness sticks, the participants were presented with actual plates of food and asked to estimate the given portion sizes using the given PSEAs. RESULTS: The improved 2-dimensional (2D) picture aid for the rice bowl reflecting the size distortion by angle of view using 3D modeling was perceived more closely to the actual size than the current 2D picture (P < 0.001). The change of the color of 2D pictures and 3D models, the change of shape of the measuring spoons, and the 3-dimensionalization of the 2D mounds had no significant improvement in the subjects' perception. CONCLUSIONS: The currently used 2D PSEAs need to be fully redesigned using 3D modeling to improve subjects' perception. However, change of color or shape will not be necessary. For amorphous foods, it is suggested that more evaluation be performed before reaching a final conclusion in the use of PSEAs, or alternative ways to improve accuracy of estimation need to be explored.

  • In a large scale survey, cluster sampling design in which a set of observation units called clusters are selected is often used to satisfy practical restrictions on time and cost. Especially, a two stage cluster sampling design is preferred when a strong intra-class correlation exists among observation units. The sample Primary Sampling Unit(PSU) and Secondary Sampling Unit(SSU) size for a two stage cluster sample is determined by the survey cost and precision of the estimator calculated. For this study, we derive the optimal sample PSU and SSU size when the population SSU size across the PSU are di erent by extending the result obtained under the assumption that all PSU have the same number of SSU. The results on the sample size are then applied to the $4^{th}$ Korea Hospital Discharge results and is compared to the conventional method. We also propose the optimal sample SSU (discharged patients) size for the $7^{th}$ Korea Hospital Discharge Survey.

  • This study conducted over two rounds Delphi survey targeting experts in the fields of roads, transportation, automobiles, intelligent transport systems(ITS), and communications to analyze the direction of change in road design, operation, and systems in the Lv.4/4+ autonomous driving era. To construct the Delphi survey items, a basic survey was conducted. The first and second Delphi surveys targeted experts in fields closely related to autonomous driving. The results of the survey revealed an expectation that in the future, transportation operations would change focus to shared autonomous vehicle(AV) and public transportation transfers, and there would be corresponding changes in the cross-sectional configuration. Exclusive lanes for AV are expected to be introduced commencing from highways and general national roads, and there was a consensus that they should be installed in the center of the road rather than on the sides and would use the same lane width as that of the existing road. In terms of facilities for AVs, it was found that it would be necessary to expand pedestrian-vehicle separation facilities, insert communication chips into facilities for location recognition, advance precision maps, and expand roadside communication facilities.

  • To survey satellites using only GPS can sometimes cause an impossible situation due to the many different geographical conditions as city cannon and obstacles. Although the GLONASS satellite system does not have the ability to survey itself accurately since it currently lacks of the number of usable satellites, it is able to bridge the gap when combined with GPS. This research used the GPS receiver to perform four analyzing methods to bring out the independent surveying method of GPS and combined surveying method of GPS and GLONASS(4 methods - number of satellites able to receive, precision of raw data, standard deviation from known point and RTK surveying). The result of test surveying satellites showed that 11 hours were possible to measure a minimum of 4 satellites when using an independent surveying method and 4 hours in unified surveying method in a month. Also, the precision of raw data using GPS and GLONASS surveying is 0.08~l.8m better than the GPS surveying in standard deviation. The deviation of known points by GPS and GLONASS also showed better accuracy by 3~l1mm. The RTK showed the range of differences in deviation of survey by leaning towards the GPS independent survey in Northing coordinate and leaned towards the Easting coordinate when GPS and GLONASS were combined. Nonetheless, it can't be said that the unified method is better, because it has limits to its capability.

  • The spatial distribution characteristics of damaged trees by the pine wilt disease appear scattered spots spreading from single dead trees. That is the reason why it is difficult to early detect damage and to prevent from extensive damage. Thus, it is very important to forecast and analyze the damage occurrences, to establish strategies for prevention, and to supervise them. However, conventional survey which observes around roads or residential areas by naked eyes was impossible to investigate completely, missing target areas and dangerous areas. Therefore, aerial forecasting techniques on the damaged area were developed using GIS, GPS, and helicopters for an accurate observation of systematic and scientific approach in this study. Moreover, advantages of the techniques application were confirmed to survey 972 dead tree samples at 349 position-coordinates in 32 cities (about $28,810km^2$), 2005. This study is expected to apply widely to find dead trees and the causes, particularly by pine wilt disease.

  • In Taiwan, there are more the one hundred GPS tracking stations maintained by Ministry of the Interior (MOI), Academia Sinica, Central Weather Bureau and Central Geological Survey. In the further, they may be instead of the GPS controlling points after giving the lawful status. In other words, the engineers don't need to survey on the reference points when they are surveying in the field. They only need to download the GPS data via internet and process the observations in their company. The precise coordinates of the unknown points will be obtained. Therefore, the data qualities of the tracking stations are more and more important. In this study, six data quality indexes were adopted as follows: observations, cycle slips, multipath on L1, multipath on L2, clock offset and frequency stability. Besides, the relationships of the indexes and the positioning precision were found. The frequency stability of GPS receiver is the most important index, the cycle slip is the second index and the mutlipath is the third index. According to the results, the auto-analytical system of GPS data quality was established and the tracking stations were monitored. When the receiver got some problem or the station's environment changed, we hope to find and resolve the problems earlier to make sure the high data quality of the tracking stations. Moreover, we try to design a data quality verification to help users and let the engineers have more and more confidence when they use the data of GPS tracking stations.

  • A bio-check unit and health index were developed to provide information on personal health state with easily available noninvasive measurements and surveys. Four health indices were defined such as cardiovascular index, stress index, obesity index, and management index. Methods were developed to calculate health index scores from measured physiological signals and answer of survey questions. In order to evaluate effectiveness of the health indices, a clinical trial was conducted for 362 persons who visited general hospital for annual health inspection. The cardiovascular index showed a good correlation coefficient of 0.685 with the cardiovascular health graded by a medical doctor. The stress index showed a good correlation coefficient of 0.638 with the results of stress questionnaires being used in the public health center. Once the health index function is added in the bio-check unit, the unit may provide useful contents for personal health management.

  • The equal distribution of the gravity as well as the topographic data is an essential factor in the precision geoid determination. In this study, the area where needs the supplementary gravity survey is assigned through a simulation to build the 5cm level geoid. Based on the current distribution of the gravity data which results in the 8cm level of the precision over all, we extract the area which shows the errors larger than 30 cm. Then, the area is assumed to be filled with gravity data with 2km interval which is turned out to be successfully improving the overall accuracy up to 5cm. Therefore, it is recommended that the supplementary gravity survey should be conducted in mountainous area such as eastern and mid-northern part of Kangwon-Do to achieve the 5cm accuracy on the geoid.

  • The ratio of the deterioration housing in rural area was 29.6%, but it was 18.3% in urban area based on a 2018 survey. In consideration of the point, this study aims to analyze the actual condition of indoor air quality in rural houses to provide basic data for improving the indoor air environment. It was investigated 15housings of Hongseong-gun, Chungchengnam-do. To investigate the correlation between indoor air quality and housing type, both the field survey of housing type and precision diagnosis of concentration of indoor air pollutants such as HCHO, TVOC, Fine dust(PM-10, PM-2.5), CO2, Radon. The results of this study are as follows. First, according to the average value of each element of rural old housing, the construction year was distributed in 1939~2004, and 12households(80%) living in houses older than 30years have passed for about 46years. As for the housing area, more than 12houses(80%) of 60㎡ or more and 3 houses (20%) of less than 60㎡ were often living in relatively small-scale housing. Second, as a result of measuring indoor air pollutants in rural houses, substances exceeding the standard values were found in HCHO, TVOC, CO2. Third, in the case of Fine dust and Radon, none of such factors were exceeded the standard. Fourth, there was no significant difference in indoor air quality depending on housing type in rural houses. This paper is expected to contribute to the regional development projects and effective implementation of rural policies.
