  • Out-of-sphericity is degree of deformation of an air bearing sphere deviated from a perfect sphere. This paper investigates numerically the effect of out-of-sphericity error on the radial stiffness of an air bearing Three types of out-of-sphericity modes are considered. in this study the stiffness is calculated from pressure distribution at the bearing surface which is obtained by solving th Reynolds equation. in some cases large out-of-sphericity errors are found to improve the stiffnesses of air bearings. This implies that an air bearing of perfect hemispheres is not necessarily of the best performance. Thus much labor and cost in manufacturing air bearings can be saved, In addition the radial stiffness of an air bearing depends greatly on the application direction.

  • This paper presents a dynamic modeling method for the indeterminate spindle-bearing system supported by multiple bearings of different types. A spindle-bearing system supported by ball and cylindrical roller bearings is considered. The de Mul's bearing model is extended for calculating ball and cylindrical roller bearing stiffness matrices with inclusion of centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment. The dependence between spindle shaft reaction forces and bearing stiffness is effectively resolved using an iterative approach. The spindle rotor dynamics is established with the Timoshenko beam theory based finite elements. The spindle reaction forces, bearings stiffness and spindle natural frequencies are obtained with taking into account spindle radial load, ball bearing axial preload and rotational speed effects. The developed method is verified by comparing the simulation results with those from a commercial program.

  • The creep crack growth properties in 3.3NiCrMoV steel were investigated at 55$0^{\circ}C$ by using CT specimen under constant load and constant Ct condition that was held during crack growth of Imm distance. Ct lelied on load line displacement rate, C*usually increased with crack length though load is reduced in order to maintain constant Ct value as crack growth and appeared scatter band. At constant load and Ct region, crack growth slope was 0.900 and 0.844 each, on the other hand C* slope was 0.480. Fully coalesced area(FCA) ahead of crack tip increased as Ct increase to the critical value, and after that value FCA decreased. For the tertiary creep stage of crack growth test, the most of displacement was due to the steady state creep, except only small part due to the primary creep and other effects. Therefore, tests were mainly interrupted in the tertiary stage to obtain high value of Ct.

  • This study deals with the method of post-processing in the automatic tool path generation for 5-axis NC machining. The 5-axis NC machining cannot only cope with the manufacturing of complicated shapes, but also offers numerous advantages such as reasonable tool employment, great reduction of set-up process and so on. Thus 5-axis NC machining has been used fur aircraft parts, mold and die as well as for complicated shapes such as impeller, propeller and rotor. However, most of the present CAM systems for 5-axis NC machining have limited functions in terms of tool collision, machine limits and post-processing. Especially 5-axis machine configurations are various according to the method which the rotational axes are adapted with the table and spindle. For that reason, in many cases the optimal numerical control (NC) data cannot be obtained or considerable time is consumed. To solve this problem, we applied a general post-processor fur 5-axis NC machining. The validity of this post-processor should be experimentally confirmed by successfully milling to a helix shaped workpiece.

  • In SRM drive, the ON·OFF angles of each phase switch should be accurately controlled in order to control the torque and speed stably. The accuracy of the switching angles is dependent upon the resolution of the encoder and the sampling period of the microprocessor, that are used to provide the information of the rotor position and to control the SRM power circuit, respectively. However, as the speed increases, the amount of the switching angle deviation from the preset values is also increased. Therefore, the low cost encoder suitable for the practical and stable SRM drive is proposed and the control algorithm to provide the switching signals using the simple digital logic circuit is also presented in this paper, As a result, a stable high speed SRM drive can be achieved by the high resolution switching angle control and it is verified from the experiments that the proposed encoder the logic controller can be a powerful candidate for the practical low cost SRM drive.

  • Vibration, giving rise to acoustical noise, is an important index of motor performance. The unbalance force due to rotor eccentricity caused by manufacturing imprecision or bearing defects is one possible source of excitation to vibration. With the advent of new high-energy magnetic material together with high precision motor applications, magnetic sources of vibration are becoming more serious. This paper introduces two types of high-speed slotless permanent magnet (PM) machine for electro-mechanical battery and investigates unbalance force due to static eccentricity with finite element method.

  • Recently, a high speed cutting is essential requirement to satisfy latest demand of high precision product and machining of hard materials. However heat generation by high speed rotation causes many problems. The machining error and shortening spindle lifetime by thermal stress is typical example. Generation of heat is mostly caused by sliding at the rotor and bearing. For minimization of heat generation at bearing, decision of the condition of proper lubrication is necessary. The thermal study about 40,000rpm spindle by changing the condition of oil-air lubrication method is carried out in this paper. The results of this paper can be used effectively in the decision of oil-air lubrication condition of other types of spindle for machine tools.

  • RVDT is a transducer that presents rotary phase angle according to the displacement of eccentric rotor such as press machine. However a study on the phase error of RVDT that affects precision is not enough. This paper analyzes RVDT phase error and obtains compensation curves with serial or parallel resistance through simulation. First, error compensation procedure that analyses errors due to the unbalance of reference inductances of each pole and uses parallel resistance as a compensation is proposed. Second, error compensation procedure due to the amplitude unbalance of the sensor driving currents is examined by serial compensation resistance. Experimentally, we got stable RVDT with phase error under $1^{\circ}$ by the proposed method.

  • The direct drive motor used in a precision motion rotate at about 1/10 speed and high torque comparing with general rotary motor. Excessive heating of the coils cause an exacerbating the heat problems and reducing the performance of motor. Because the rotation speed of the rotor and surrounding air is low, the motor can not be inefficiently cooled, the thermal analysis in the motor is very important. As the variations of rotation speed and torque, the temperature of several parts is measured and the features of the heat transfer is analyzed and improved.

  • This paper presents a contribution to parameter identification of a non-linear system using a new strategy to improve the genetic algorithm (GA) method. Since cost function plays an important role in GA-based parameter identification, we propose to improve the simple version of GA, where weights of the cost function are not taken as constant values, but varying along the procedure of parameter identification. This modified version of GA is applied to the induction motor (IM) as an example of nonlinear system. The GA cost function is the weighted sum of stator current and rotor speed errors between the plant and the model of induction motor. Simulation results show that the identification method based on improved GA is feasible and gives high precision.
