  • The main purpose of this work is to analyse damages caused by debris flows during the heavy rainfall at Inje province in Kangwondo, Korea. A series of site investigations have been performed to survey the characteristics of debris flows occurred during the summer season of 2006. It has been found that major losses and costs are triggered by discharge of soil and rock fragments from landslides. During the rainfall unexpectedly high precipitation rate of 113.5mm/hour and 355mm/day was recorded, which could happen at a 80-500 year period. Comparing the period of the rainfall with the time of the landslides, it has been found that the occurrence of the landslides is directly related to heavy rainfalls. At present, several debris barriers have been built at the valleys and natural slopes have been protected by the seed spray method. It is intended to propose an appropriate solutions of restoration of landslide damages and maintenance based on findings from the current study.

  • The semi-arid and arid regions comprise almost 40 percent of the world's land surface. The low and erratic precipitation pattern is the single most significant contributor for limiting crop production in such regions where rainfall is the source for surface, soil and ground water. In a changing climate, the semi-arid and arid regions would increasingly face the challenge of water scarcity. According to the relevant literature; under the assumption of a doubling of the current atmospheric CO2 concentration, irrigation demand was estimated to increase for wheat and to decrease for second crop maize in a Mediterranean environment of Turkey in the 2070s. Crop evapotranspiration would decrease due to stomata closure. Reference evapotranspiration and potential soil evaporation were projected to increase by 8.0 and 7.3%, respectively, whereas actual soil evaporation was predicted to decrease by 16.5%. Drainage losses below 90 cm soil depth were found to decrease mainly due to lesser rainfall amount in the future.

  • Major impacts of climate change expert that soil erosion rate may increase during the $21^{st}$ century. This study was conducted to assess the potential impacts of climate change on soil erosion by water in Korea. The soil loss was estimated for regions with the potential risk of soil erosion on a national scale. For computation, Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) with rainfall and runoff erosivity factors (R), cover management factors (C), support practice factors (P) and revised USLE with soil erodibility factors (K) and topographic factors (LS) were used. RUSLE, the revised version of USLE, was modified for Korean conditions and re-evaluate to estimate the national-scale of soil loss based on the digital soil maps for Korea. The change of precipitation for 2010 to 2090s were predicted under A1B scenarios made by National Institute of Meteorological Research in Korea. Future soil loss was predicted based on a change of R factor. As results, the predicted precipitations were increased by 6.7% for 2010 to 2030s, 9.5% for 2040 to 2060s and 190% for 2070 to 2090s, respectively. The total soil loss from uplands in 2005 was estimated approximately $28{\times}10^6$ ton. Total soil losses were estimated as $31{\times}10^6$ ton in 2010 to 2030s, $31{\times}10^6$ ton in 2040 to 2060s and $33{\times}10^6$ ton in 2070 to 2090s, respectively. As precipitation increased by 17% in the end of $21^{st}$ century, the total soil loss was increased by 12.9%. Overall, these results emphasize the significance of precipitation. However, it should be noted that when precipitation becomes insignificant, the results may turn out to be complex due to the large interaction among plant biomass, runoff and erosion. This may cause increase or decrease the overall erosion.

  • This paper studies the method of estimating power loss and classifying the factors for improving the power generation efficiency through O&M. It is installed under various climatic conditions worldwide, operational and maintenance technologies suitable for the characteristics of the installation location are required. Existing studies related to solar power generation efficiency have been actively quantifying the impact on short-term losses by environmental factors such as high temperature, dust accumulation, precipitation, humidity, and wind speed, but analysis of the overall impact from a long-term operation perspective is limited. In this study, the potential for efficiency improvement was analyzed by re-establishing a loss classification system according to the power flow of solar power to derive a comprehensive efficiency model for long-term operation and estimating power loss through a case study for each region where climate conditions are classified. As a result of the analysis, the average annual potential for improving soiling loss was 26.9%, Death Valley 7.2%, and Seoul 3.8%. Aging losses was 6.6% in the 20th year as a cumulative. The average annual potential due to temperature loss was 2.9 % for Doha, 1.9% for Death Valley, and 0.2% for Seoul.

  • This research is carried out to investigate the formation and preservative effectiveness of inorganic substance, calcium carbonate($CaCO_3$), in wood. The specimens were prepared by the impregnation with saturated solutions of potassium carbonate($K_2CO_3$) into the wood followed by precipitation in saturated solutions of calcium chloride($CaCl_2$) for 24h, 72h and 120h, and then they were leached in instrument flowing with water for 24h. The weight percent gains of $K_2CO_3$ solution impregnated specimens reached approximately a maximum value (108.1%) by 72h precipitation in $CaCl_2$ solutions. Inorganic substances were observed to he produced in the lumina of tracheids of specimens. From these inorganic substances filling in the tracheids, characteristic X-rays of calcium(Ca-$K_{\alpha}$) were detected by energy dispersive X-ray analyzer. Moreover, it was shown from a leaching treatment that these substances could not he leached easily from the specimens. Therefore, they were could he considered to be insoluble calcium carbonates. The weight losses of the prepared specimens were hardly occurred by test fungi attacks. Thus inorganic substances in specimens can be said to have preservative effectiveness.

  • This study evaluated the protein recovery, functional properties and biological activity of isolate processed water (IPW) generated in the preparation of protein isolates from fish roes (BH, bastard halibut Paralichthys olivaceus; ST, skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis; YT, yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares) by an isoelectric solubilization and precipitation process. The IPWs contained 2.7-5.4 mg/mL of protein, and the protein losses were 8-21% (P<0.05). The form capacity of IPW-3 for BH and ST, and IPW-4 for YT was 155, 194, and 164%, respectively. The emulsifying activity index ($27-43m^2/g$) of the YT-IPWs was the strongest, followed by ST ($7-29m^2/g$) and BH ($10-19m^2/g$). The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activities of IPW-1 and -3 were higher than those of IPW-2 and -4. The 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid scavenging activity ($IC_{50}$, mg/mL) of IPW-2 and -4 was 0.03 mg/mL for BH, 0.04-0.08 mg/mL for ST, and 0.04-0.07 mg/mL for YT. BH IPW-3 had the strongest reducing power (0.41 mg/mL) and superoxide dismutase-like activity (1.68 mg/mL). The angiotensin-I converting enzyme inhibitory activity of IPW-3 was the highest for ST (1.52 mg/mL), followed by BH and YT. The common predominant amino acids in the IPWs were the essential amino acids Val, Leu, Lys, and Arg and the non-essential amino acids Ser, Glu, and Ala.

  • A simplified one-dimensional model STELLA was used to predict soil water movement in lllinois corn fields using soil water balance sheets. It offered the potential to increase understanding of soil nitrate and agrochemical leaching process. The model accounted for aU possible annual inputs and outputs of water from a closed ecosystem as represented by corn fields. Water inputs included precipitation, while outputs included runoff, transpiration, evaporation and drainage. To run the model required daily inputs of two climatic data measurements such as daily precipitation and pan evaporation. Vertical water flow through the soil profile was calculated with first order equation including the difference in hydraulic conductivity and matric potential at the various soil types. The output results included daily changes of water content in the soil layers and daily amount of water losses including run-off, percolation, transpiration. This model was verified using Illinois corn field data for the soil water content measured by neutron scattering methods through 1992 to 1994 growing seasons. Approximately 22 to 78% of simulated water contents agreed with the measured values and their standard deviation, depending on soil types, whereas 30 to 70% of simulated water values agreed with the measured values and their standard deviations depending on soil layers.

  • Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to assess the impact of potential future climate change on the water cycle and soil loss of the Daecheong reservoir watershed. A sensitivity analysis using influence coefficient method was conducted for two selected hydrological input parameters and three selected sediment input parameters to identify the most to the least sensitive parameters. A further detailed sensitivity analysis was performed for the parameters: Manning coefficient for channel (Cn), evaporation (ESCO), and sediment concentration in lateral (LAT_SED), support practice factor (USLA_P). Calibration and verification of SWAT were performed on monthly basis for 1993~2006 and 1977~1991, respectively. The model efficiency index (EI) and coefficient of determination ($R^2$) computed for the monthly comparisons of runoffs were 0.78 and 0.76 for the calibration period, and 0.58 and 0.65 for the verification period. The results showed that the hydrological cycle in the watershed is very sensitive to climate factors. A doubling of atmospheric $CO_2$ concentrations was predicted to result in an average annual flow increase of 27.9% and annual sediment yield increase of 23.3%. Essentially linear impacts were predicted between two precipitation change scenarios of -20, and 20%, which resulted in average annual flow and sediment yield changes at Okcheon of -53.8%, 63.0% and -55.3%, 65.8%, respectively. An average annual flow increase of 46.3% and annual sediment yield increase of 36.4% was estimated for a constant humidity increase 5%. An average annual flow decrease of 9.6% and annual sediment yield increase of 216.4% was estimated for a constant temperature increase $4^{\circ}C$.

  • The reliability of hydraulic equipment used in power plants is especially important because failures that occur in the power plant can have a great ripple effect on human lives and financial losses. In this study, specimens using the materials used in the spool and sleeve of hydraulic valves of power plants have been produced, heat-treated, and tested under the precipitation conditions of phosphate ester hydraulic fluid with a variety of conditions. 23 full factorial designs have been applied to evaluate the significance of factors that affect the wear loss of the specimen, specifically, the load, velocity, and temperature. The significance evaluation was performed on the main effects and two-way interactions for wear loss based on the experiment results, and the mathematical equations between the wear loss and the three factors were derived from the analysis results.
