A Synchronization & Cell Searching Technique for OFDM-based Cellular Systems (OFDM 기반의 셀룰러 시스템을 위한 동기화 및 셀 탐색 기법)

  • In this paper, a novel preamble structure, including a synchronization preamble and a cell search preamble, is proposed for OFDM-based cellular systems. An efficient algorithm for downlink synchronization and cell searching using the preamble is also proposed. The synchronization process includes the initial symbol timing estimation using continuously, or at least, periodically transmitted downlink signal, frame synchronization, the fine symbol timing estimation, and the frequency offset estimation using the synchronization preamble, and the cell identification using the cell searching preamble. Performance of each synchronization and cell searching step is analyzed and the analytic results including the overall performance of the synchronization and cell searching are verified by computer simulation. It is shown that the proposed preamble with the corresponding synchronization and cell searching algorithm can provide very robust synchronization and cell searching capability even in bad cellular environments.

OFDM/OQAM-IOTA System With Odd/Even Center Preamble Structure (Odd/Even Center Preamble 구조를 가진 OFDM/OQAM-IOTA 시스템)

  • OFDM/OQAM(Offset QAM)-IOTA system requires the IOTA(Isotropic Orthogonal Transform Algorithm) function that has superior localization property in time and frequency domain instead of guard interval used for conventional OFDM/QAM system to be robust to multipath channel. Therefore, OFDM/OQAM-IOTA system has more spectral efficiency than conventional OFDM/QAM system. But, when channel estimation scheme for conventional OFDM/QAM system is applied straightforwardly to OFDM/OQAM-IOTA system, an intrinsic Inter- symbol-Interference is observed. So suitable preamble structure for the channel estimation scheme of OFDM/OQAM-IOTA system is required. In this paper, we propose a new preamble structure that is appropriate to OPDM/OQAM-IOTA system and then perform ideal channel estimation and practical channel estimation in low-to-medium mobile speed and compare them with conventional OFDM/QAM system. Simulation results show that OFDM/OQAM-IOTA system with proposed preamble structure has 1.5 dB Eb/NO gain on Target BER $10^{-3}$ and about $25\%$ transmission rate gain against the conventional OFDM/QAM system considering quarter of FFT size as guard interval size.

  • In this paper, a preamble structure and a timing synchronization method for 802.16e based system are developed. The performances of the timing offset estimation in multipath fading channel is compared in terms of absolute mean. The simulation result shows that the proposed method has smaller mean.

Initial Timing Acquisition for Binary Phase-Shift Keying Direct Sequence Ultra-wideband Transmission

  • This paper presents a parallel processing searcher structure for the initial synchronization of a direct sequence ultra-wideband (DS-UWB) system, which is suitable for the digital implementation of baseband functionalities with a 1.32 Gsample/s chip rate analog-to-digital converter. An initial timing acquisition algorithm and a data demodulation method are also studied. The proposed searcher effectively acquires initial symbol and frame timing during the preamble transmission period. A hardware efficient receiver structure using 24 parallel digital correlators for binary phase-shift keying DS-UWB transmission is presented. The proposed correlator structure operating at 55 MHz is shared for correlation operations in a searcher, a channel estimator, and the demodulator of a RAKE receiver. We also present a pseudo-random noise sequence generated with a primitive polynomial, $1+x^2+x^5$, for packet detection, automatic gain control, and initial timing acquisition. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed parallel processing searcher employing the presented pseudo-random noise sequence outperforms that employing a preamble sequence in the IEEE 802.15.3a DS-UWB proposal.

  • A high data rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) system is a hot issue in wireless communication communities and being standardized. Multi-band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) is one of the candidates for WPAN standard. In this paper, we discuss the PLCP (Physical Layer Convergence Protocol) structure for MB-OFDM. Also we evaluate the performance of two signal detection algorithms, which are the method of cross-correlation with the original preamble and the signed preamble. The latter has a low complexity with a little degradation.

  • In this paper, we propose a new frame structure and frame synchronization algorithm for OFDM burst mode transmission. On the contrary to conventional OFDM symbol based methods, the proposed preamble for symbol frame synchronization is designed independently in time domain in arbitrary length and is placed at the beginning of the frame. The proposed frame synchronization algorithm by using the preamble is working independent of frequency offset and robust to serious channel environment.

  • Together with the GPS-based approach, geolocation through mobile communication networks is a key technology for location-based service. Since the Mobile WiMAX system is considered as a candidate for fourth-generation mobile systems, it is important to investigate its location capability. The geolocation of Mobile WiMAX can be realized when the preamble symbols in the down-link channel are appropriately used for a TDOA (Time-Difference-of-Arrival) approach. However, the cellular structure of Mobile WiMAX inevitably generates co-channel interference, and it is difficult for the mobile terminal to acquire distance measurements from multiple base stations. Therefore, for geolocation via multilateration using the Mobile WiMAX network, it is very important to increase hearability. This paper proposes a geolocation method for Mobile WiMAX which employs interference cancellation and preamble signal overlapping for the enhancement of hearability. A novel interference cancellation strategy for complex-valued Mobile WiMAX signals is presented which has an iterative structure. Simulation results show that the proposed geolocation method provides the user's position with an accuracy of less than 20 m through the Mobile WiMAX cellular network if there is no multi-path or NLOS (None-Line-of-Sight).

Highly Simplified and Bandwidth-Efficient Human Body Communications Based on IEEE 802.15.6 WBAN Standard

  • This paper presents a transmission method for improving human body communications in terms of spectral efficiency, and the performances of bit-error-rate (BER) and frame synchronization, with a highly simplified structure. Compared to the conventional frequency selective digital transmission supporting IEEE standard 802.15.6 for wireless body area networks, the proposed scheme improves the spectral efficiency from 0.25 bps/Hz to 1 bps/Hz based on the 3-dB bandwidth of the transmit spectral mask, and the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) by 0.51 dB at a BER of $10^{-6}$ with an 87.5% reduction in the detection complexity of the length of the Hamming distance computation. The proposed preamble structure using its customized detection algorithm achieves perfect frame synchronization at the SNR of a BER of $10^{-6}$ by applying the proposed pre-processing to compensate for the distortions on the preamble signals due to the band-limit effects by transmit and receive filters.

  • To successfully accomplish a bit synchronization, a synchronizer should exploit a preamble pattern. A MFM (modified frequency modulation) flag is uses as a preamble in a PJM (phase jitter modulation) mode RFID standard. In the recent work, a synchronizer for a PJM mode tag was proposed, which is composed of several correlators. In this paper, we present a new bit synchronizer in which a coarse synchronization is done as in the previous work while a fine synchronization is performed via exploiting a violation bit included in the MFM flag. We show that the proposed synchronizer can significantly reduce the overall hardware complexity at the expense of slight burden to a demodulator structure. Through simulation, we also show that its performance is comparable to that of the previous system despite its hardware simplicity.

An Efficient Synchronization and Cell Searching Method for OFDMA/TDD System (OFDMA/TDD 시스템을 위한 효율적인 동기 추정 및 셀 탐색 기법)

  • In this parer, we analyze the preamble model in the OFDMA/TDD(OFDM-FDMA/Time Division Duplexing). Besides, under AWGN, ITU-R M.1225 Ped-B and Veh-A channel environments, we analyze capabilities of symbol timing & carrier frequency offset and performance of cell searching capabilities applied to OFDM/TDD system through computer simulation. The performance using Detection Probability, False Alarm Probability, Missing Probability, Mean Acquisition Time and MSE(Mean Square Error) is analyzed. Especially, in the case of symbol timing offset estimation, the preamble structure and its algorithm with enhanced performance are proposed and then compared with existing ones.
