Portfolio assessment provides many opportunities to foster children's creativity and to increase their responsibility for learning. few research study has been conducted in this area, and this assessment method has scarcely been administered in primary science class, Proper and effective use of portfolio assessment in our primary science class requires basic research on how to design and administer the method. Based on the earlier study on typical structures and components of portfolio assessment, the assessment instrument was developed on various primary science topics, The development team was consisted of one science education specialist and nine pre-service elementary school teachers. It takes ten months to develop instruments for 27 class hours. The development process was reciprocal in that development and revision cycle was repeated more than 7 times. The portfolio assessment instruments consist of instructional objectives, developers' evidence for the objectives, and assessment criteria. Adopting a new way of assessment into science class inevitably causes lots of confusions to teachers and children. The absence of basic research studies must be a critical barrier for successful administration of a new assessment method such as portfolio assessment. further research is required in the preparation and administration of portfolio assessment in our primary science classroom.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the systems thinking level of pre-service teachers using rubrics of evaluating systems thinking. For this purpose, systems thinking level model, which can be applied to education or science education, was selected through literature analysis. Eight pre-service teachers' systems thinking were investigated through the systems thinking analysis tool used in domestic research. The systems thinking presented by the pre-service teachers were transformed into the box type causal map using Sibley et al. (2007). Two researchers analyzed the systems thinking using rubrics of evaluating systems thinking. For data analysis, quantitative analysis was performed through correlation analysis using SPSS. In addition, the qualitative analysis of the box type causal map was conducted and the consistency with the quantitative analysis results was verified. The results indicated that the correlation between the 5-Likert systems thinking measurement instrument and the rubrics score was highly correlated with the Pearson product-moment of .762 (p <.05). In the hierarchical correlation of the systems thinking level, the STH model was analyzed with a very high correlation with the Pearson product-moment of .722~.791, and 4-step model was analyzed .381~.730. The qualitative analysis suggested the concept to be included in the low level of system thinking, the higher the level, the less the concept that is presented properly. In conclusion, the level of systems thinking can be derived as a result of research that there is clearly, a hierarchical part. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop a systems thinking level model applicable to science education and develop and validate items that can measure the level of systems thinking.

This study analyzed the difficulty level of class on the seasonal change unit for 84 students at a university of education. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, if we first present the four topics that make up the seasonal changes in elementary science, the subjects that have the greatest difficulty in teaching for prospective elementary school teachers are 'Why do seasonal changes occur?' (Teaching difficulty level 4.05), 'The sun changes depending on the season' What is the difference between the southern altitude and the length of day and night?' (difficulty level of class, 3.12), 'What is the relationship between the altitude of the sun, length of shadow, and temperature during the day?' (difficulty level of class, 2.85), 'How does the temperature change depending on the season?' (class difficulty level 2.80). As a result, in the elementary science season change unit, the class on the four topics 'Why do seasons change?', which is classified as a class topic that requires the concept of spatial perception, showed a higher level of class difficulty than other units. Second, in the seasonal change unit, various factors of class difficulty appeared depending on the class topic. When pre-service elementary school teachers look at the factors that make class difficult when teaching a lesson on seasonal changes in order of frequency, 42 (50%) said 'Experimental instruction for comparing the altitude of solar masculine according to the tilt of the axis of rotation', followed by 'Solar masculine'. 38 people (45%) answered 'Difficulty in explaining mid-high altitude and the length of day and night', 27 people (32%) answered 'Difficulty in explaining the concept of mid-high altitude', and 24 people (32%) answered 'Difficulty in explaining seasonal changes in the sun's position.' 29%), 20 people (24%) said 'Explain the reasonable reason why the height of the light should be adjusted when measuring the solar altitude', and 16 people (19%) said 'It is difficult to explain the reason for the discrepancy between the solar altitude and the maximum temperature'. ), 'difficulties in measuring sand (ground) temperature' were mentioned by 12 people (14%). Third, when analyzing the factors of class difficulty, there were more curriculum factors than teacher factors. In this context, the exploratory activities on 'Why do seasonal changes occur?', the fourth topic of the seasonal change unit in which elementary school pre-service teachers showed the greatest difficulty in teaching, need improvement in terms of the curriculum.
This study analyzed the features of norms formed in mobile-based science problem-solving and interpreted them from the perspective of digital citizenship. For this, we implemented two mobile-based science problem-solving activities for nine elementary school preparatory teachers composed of two groups, and analyzed the norms observed in their activities. As a result, four norms were found as follows. First, the information presented as a basis should be scientifically reliable. Second, the information need to be searched widely, but the information should be selected and reconstructed in relation to the problem. Third, in a mobile environment, the ideas should be clearly expressed and understood. Fourth, courtesies in mobile interaction should be represented more politely than in face-to-face interaction. Based on the four norms found in this study, we discussed the characteristics and factors of digital citizenship for judging scientifically reliable and relevant information and expressing ideas clearer in mobile environment. Finally, we suggested the educational implications for fostering digital citizens who can judge and practice 'science issues' in a 'mobile environment'.
Ray drawing in geometrical optics is an effective method for visible imagery of light. In this study, we developed peer instruction materials for in-service teachers' training concepts on the refraction of light including drawing rays. And then we applied these programs to 29 pre-service teachers and 21 in-service primary teachers and evaluated the degree of conceptual change in correct points from the pretest and the post one. As a result of pretesting, in spite of experiences for learning this topic in elementary and secondary education courses, most participants in the study did not well understand the path of refracted light before instructions. However, the result of post testing after the application of peer instruction materials shows that they have practiced ray drawing, which is helping visible imagery. Accordingly, in learning geometrical optics, we suggest that peer instruction with ray drawing activity for teachers' training program would be effective. We also suggest that similar approaches would be applied to other context.

This study is a part of our research project that considers 'Science as Wisdom (SaW)' as a new approach to science education. We presented a review of previous studies on wisdom from relevant areas as philosophy, psychology and education, and drew a few educational meanings. We also conducted a survey of science teachers' perception of wisdom to obtain implications for a follow-up study. The survey was conducted on pre-service science teachers, in-service science teachers, and teachers of other subjects. The results of this study are as follows: First, all three groups of participants perceive 'practical' domain of wisdom as most important while 'interpersonal' domain was perceived as least important. Second, all three groups of participants perceive that 'to catch what the most important problem is,' is the most important among 20 elements of wisdom. Third, when participants were asked about the 'wise people around them', the interpersonal domain followed as the second most frequent response after the 'practical' domain, which was in contrast to our first finding above. Fourth, about 80% of all participants answered that wisdom can be cultivated through school education. Finally, answers to the question asking the scientific concepts related to wisdom were categorized into four types as follows: (1) the wisdom required to understand and apply scientific knowledge, (2) the wisdom included in the meaning of scientific knowledge, (3) the wisdom needed to discover scientific knowledge, (4) the wisdom that can be developed through scientific activities.
The objective of this study is to identify the relationship of dietary habits and health habits with dental caries subjective symptoms and to present data on nutritional education related to oral health. The subjects of this study are 334 teachers at pre-schools. The subjects of the study were selected using the convenience sampling method. Surveys were taken with the self-entry questionnaire method. It was found that dental caries subjective symptoms were higher among study subjects who ate appetizers frequently through the day, consumed more milk and other dairies and sugars, drank alcohol more, did less exercise, smoked, and had less sleep time. Systematic diet control and nutritional education must be strengthened to form proper dietary habits and health habits for preventing dental caries.
This study identified and examined earth science education department programs in Korea. Major courses provided by 11 universities and their course requirements were analyzed, and the main research results are as follows. First, many basic courses, other major requisite, and elective courses are provided in geology, astronomy, and atmospheric science. oceanography, geophysics, earth environmental science, and natural disaster and energy resources had fewer major requisite courses provided in addition to basic courses, and few elective courses were offered. Second, many courses in science education focused on earth science, while others focused on general science and there were few courses that covered education theory regarding the specific subject. Third, science course application requirements emphasized the understanding of science in general or of earth science specifically. From the above results, additional studies are proposed to reflect on the current state and supplement these programs.
The purpose of this study is to investigate pre-service elementary teachers' awareness on the sources of microplastics. The participants were 75 male and 91 female undergraduates. A 15-item survey questionnaire was developed based on prior researches regarding microplastics emission sources and were modified through expert review and preliminary research. The survey results show that over 80% of the respondents had heard of microplastics before through news, internet, TV, etc. However, they tended not to be aware that things such as lab coats, wet tissue, dust protective mask, or paper cup were made of microplastics-causing substances. For the questions on the expected situation of microplastics contamination, the frequency of their choices were relatively low in 'Tires of cars running are worn out' and 'The gum stuck to the floor becomes smaller.' These results show that many of them were not aware that synthetic fiber or synthetic rubber was one of the microplastics emission sources. Gender differences were found in the attitudes toward microplastics problems. Female students are more interested in the issues and are more willing to participate in the solution, and recognize the need for more education on microplastics. The implications and future directions for science education were discussed.
This paper is an in-depth case study to analyze integrated elementary science lesson planning and practical teaching by two teachers at an urban elementary schools. One is an experienced teacher and the other is a beginning teacher. For this study, researchers asked teachers to design 5 stages of lesson planning after sharing basic theories about the integrated science education. The first of the 5 lesson planning stages is curriculum analysis and choice of integrated science topic. The second stage is constructing the frame of integrated science lesson contents, and the third is drawing a diagram of the integrated science lesson development. The fourth stage is making a table of lesson plans, and the last stage is writing integrated science lesson plans. Then, the teachers implemented the lessons they created. They taught students one unit of science which is composed of 8 lessons. Difficulties that teachers meet during designing plans and integrated science class were analyzed. 5 staged lesson planning, video transcriptions, teacher interview about lesson planning and teaching, researchers' checklists, reports of inspection classes, teachers' self evaluation, and students interviews were used for this study. One of the significant results of this study is that both experienced and beginning teachers had many difficulties in deciding on time to teach and contents of science and other subjects, as well as selection and organization of whole topics of integrated science teaching. The beginning teacher especially had greater issues with developing definite teaching-learning strategy to conduct thoughts and views for integrated science at the whole unit and each lesson. However, the experienced teacher was using various teaching-learning strategies by utilizing integrated science teaching professionalism to develop students' integrated thinking ability during the instruction of other subjects. The outcomes of this study are that both teachers could deeply understand the need and value of integrated science education at the elementary school through planning and teaching 8 lessons, and that they could have self-confidence with development of teaching professionalism for integrated science teaching. It may be possible that this study could help the development of pre- and in-service program for improvement of integrated science teaching professionalism for elementary school teacher.
