The contact wire pre-sag in railway overhead catenary has been considered as a innovative idea which improves the current collection quality and is expected to evenly distribute wear along a span. However, long term studies on the effects of pre-sag, especially on the quantitative wear pattern of the contact wire, have not yet been reported. Therefore, in this study, the pre-sag and wear pattern of the contact wire along a span from long term operation of railway in Korea was surveyed. The examination was conducted on 3 lines, the Gyeongbu high-speed line with pre-sag of span/2000, the Gyeongbu existing line without pre-sag, and Gyeongchun line with pre-sag installation on 1/1000 of its span. The wear measurements of 58 sample spans were examined. The wear pattern analysis show no interrelationships between pre-sag and evenly distributed wear, but more wear occurred at the center of a span compared to the ends of the span, especially more noticeable as span length increases.
The railway catenary is softer in the middle of a span than at the end. This stiffness variation induce the vertical motion of a moving pantograph, which results in the large variation of contact forces. To reduce the vertical motion of a pantograph, we can introduce a pre-sag of the contact wire. The pre-sag changes merely equilibrium position of the contact wire. Because the pantograph must follow the sag added to the motion of the contact wire, the sag gives downward forces to the pantograph. If the pre-sag is proper, the variation of the vertical motion of the pantograph is reduced. However, excessive sag worses the current collection performance because the pantograph receives too large downward forces by the contact wire. The objective of the paper is to establish the theoretical basis to understand how the pre-sag affect the contact force variation and to propose the proper sag for the railway catenary for the train speed up to 200 km/h.

A 400km/h simple catenary system was constructed as a test line in Korea. In the design stage of this system, the pre-sag was one of the engineering issues most focused on. It is known that the pre-sag improves the current collection performance in a certain band of high speed. However, the effect of pre-sag at 400km/h has not yet been established. To grasp a better pre-sag in the 400km/h catenary, we transacted the dynamic performance prediction simulation between catenary and pantograph under conditions of 0 and 1/3000 pre-sag. The level of 0 pre-sag was adapted for the 400km/h catenary design after reviewing predictions. We constituted the 1/3000 pre-sag sample section (about 1km) while constructing the 400km/h catenary test-bed (28km) of 0 pre-sag. With a HEMU-430X train, the contact forces were measured in the test-bed including the pre-sag sample section. In this paper, the predicted and measured dynamic performance values (contact forces) for 0 and 1/3000 pre-sag are described and compared. It is conclusively confirmed by analytical and experimental examination that the non pre-sag showed better dynamic (current collection) performance than that of the 1/3000 pre-sag for the 400km/h catenary system.
For the improvement of a train speed in the conventional line from overhead system point of view, it is necessary to approach not only in the aspect of the increasement of tension for catenary but the application of a pre-sag. A certain tension acting on a dropper is removed when it is slack by the pantograph passing. Right after the pantograph passes, the dynamic force caused by the mass of contact wire acts on the dropper. If the pre-sag is applied to the catenary, the static force on the dropper is increased. For the assurance of the safety for the dropper, it is necessary to predict the dynamic force. The purpose of this study is to predict and analyze the force on the dropper according to the applied pre-sag.

Cable supported structures offer an elegant and economical solution for bridging over long spans with resultant low material content and ease of construction. In this paper, a model of shallow cable supported footbridge with reverse profiled pre-tensioned cables is treated and its load deformation characteristics under different quasi-static loads are investigated. Effects of important parameters such as cable sag and pre-tension are also studied. Numerical results performed on a 3D model show that structural stiffness of this bridge (model) depends not only on the cable sag and cross sectional areas of the cables, but also on the pre-tension in the reverse profiled cables. The tension in the top supporting cables can be adjusted to a high level by the pre-tension in the reverse profiled bottom cables, with the total horizontal force in the bridge structure remaining reasonably constant. It is also evident that pre-tensioned horizontally profiled cables can greatly increase the lateral horizontal stiffness and suppress the lateral horizontal deflection induced by eccentric vertical loads.
It is studied that the structure of the contact plane geometry of the contact wire would be changed when the contact wire tension is increased in the existing overhead contact lines for the purpose of improving the operation speed temporarily. In this paper, the dropper length formula which could be well applied to the pre-sagged catenary is reviewed first. Second, the changing amount of the pre-sag if the contact wire tension change from 20kN to 23kN or from 20kN to 25kN for the Gyeongbu HSL(high speed line) 49.5m catenary is evaluated by using of the self-written program in accordance with the dropper length formula. Moreover, the increasing tension and measuring the pre-sag change experiment in the Gyeongbu 2 HSL was conducted. The calculated data are compared with the measured data. As a result, it is found that the geometry change is very little and will not make the current collection performance deteriorated.
Passive negative stiffness dampers (NSDs) that possess superior energy dissipation abilities, have been proved to be more efficient than commonly adopted passive viscous dampers in controlling stay cable vibrations. Recently, inertial mass dampers (IMDs) have attracted extensive attentions since their properties are similar to NSDs. It has been theoretically predicted that superior supplemental damping can be generated for a taut cable with an IMD. This paper aims to theoretically investigate the impact of the cable sag on the efficiency of an IMD in controlling stay cable vibrations, and experimentally validate superior vibration mitigation performance of the IMD. Both the numerical and asymptotic solutions were obtained for an inclined sag cable with an IMD installed close to the cable end. Based on the asymptotic solution, the cable attainable maximum modal damping ratio and the corresponding optimal damping coefficient of the IMD were derived for a given inertial mass. An electromagnetic IMD (EIMD) with adjustable inertial mass was developed to investigate the effects of inertial mass and cable sag on the vibration mitigation performance of two model cables with different sags through series of first modal free vibration tests. The results show that the sag generally reduces the attainable first modal damping ratio of the cable with a passive viscous damper, while tends to increase the cable maximum attainable modal damping ratio provided by the IMD. The cable sag also decreases the optimum damping coefficient of the IMD when the inertial mass is less than its optimal value. The theoretically predicted first modal damping ratio of the cable with an IMD, taking into account the sag generally, agrees well with that identified from experimental results, while it will be significantly overestimated with a taut-cable model, especially for the cable with large sag.
Cable-supported ribbed beam composite slab structure (CBS) is proposed in this study. As a new cable-supported structure, it has many merits such as long span availability and cost-saving. Inspired by the previous research on cable-supported structures, the fabrication and construction process are developed. Pre-stress design method based on static equilibrium analysis is presented. In the algorithm, the iteration convergence can be accelerated and the calculation result can be kept in an acceptable precision by setting a rational threshold value. The accuracy of this method is also verified by experimental study on a 1:5 scaled model. Further, important parameters affecting the mechanical features of the CBS are discussed. The results indicate that the increases of sag-span ratio, depth of the ribbed beam and cable diameter can improve the mechanical behavior of the CBS by some extent, but the influence of strut sections on mechanical behavior of the CBS is negligible.
This paper presents the effects on 154kV electrical power customers' productive activities by the instantaneous voltage sag or interruption in power system. According to the survey all respondents (8customers) experienced the breakdown of facilities when instantaneous voltage sag over about twenty percents of pre-fault occurred in power system.
The dropper length calculation method about the normal same encumbrance spans is well known independent to whether the pre-sag is given or not. But, the dropper length calculation method for the elevating span which consists in the end area of a tensioning section and normally consists with overlaps is not well known. In this study, firstly, we investigate the dropper length calculation method about the elevating span whether the insulator is contained in or not, we also recognize the effect of dropper length due to the change of the take-off point. Secondly, we very this calculation method with a catenary sample data and check again with Gyeongbu HSL design data.
