A Case Study of Flipped Learning Class in Pre-service Teacher Education (초등예비교사 교육에서의 플립드 러닝 적용 사례 연구)

  • Recently, various attempts have been made to change traditional lecture classes such as flipped learning and blended learning, and their effectiveness has been verified in various fields. On the other hand, the 2015 revised curriculum enables students to participate in self-directed learning by encouraging student participation. Teachers should also try to change the teaching method, and to improve the teaching methods by confirming the advantages and disadvantages of such new teaching methods in accordance with the demands of the times. The purpose of this study is to analyze the case of applying Blended learning class to teach mathematics education for elementary education 1 class which is one of the required subject in university of education.

Performing an Instructional Simulation Using a Socrates' Method by the Connection of In-Service Teachers Education and Pre-Service Teachers Education (현직교사 교육과 예비교사 교육의 연계를 통한 산파법 관점에서의 모의수업 실행 사례)

  • This study is a follow-up study of the previous research for teacher education(Kim Nam Hee, 2006, 2009, 2013, 2014). This study was conducted with third grade students of the college of education in 2016. In this study, we guided to allow pre-service teachers to develop their teaching research ability and teaching practical skills using the results obtained from the in-service teachers training courses. Processes mainly performed in this study are as follows; learning the theory on Socrates' method, case study for thought experiment activities, instructional simulation using a Socrates' method, class analysis, textbook analysis, peer evaluation, self-assessment. Observing tutorial examples by in-service teachers, pre-service teachers were expanding their limited knowledge and experience. By analyzing the results obtained from this research processes, we checked the points to put more attention in future pre-service teachers education.

A Study on "Comparing Two Data Sets" as Effective Tasks for the Education of Pre-Service Elementary Teachers (예비초등교사교육을 위한 효과적인 과제로서 "두 자료집합 비교하기" 과제의 가능성 탐색)

  • It is an important to develop teachers' statistical reasoning or thinking by teacher education. In this study, the "comparing two data sets" tasks is focused as a way to develop pre-service elementary teachers' reasoning about core ideas of statistics such as distribution, variability, center, and spread. 6 teams of each 4 pre-service elementary teachers participated on the tasks and their presentations are analyzed based on Pfannkuch's (2006) teachers' inference model in comparing two data sets. As a result, they paid attention to the distribution and variability in the statistical problem solving by the "comparing two data sets" tasks, and used their contextual knowledge to make a statistical decision. In addition, they used some statistics and graphs as the reference for statistical communication, which is expected to provide implications for improving statistical education. The finding implies that the "comparing two data sets" tasks can be used to develop statistical reasoning of pre-service elementary teachers. Some recommendations are suggested for teacher education by these tasks.

The Issues of the Elementary School Teacher Recruitment Examination (교대 수학심화과정에서 본 초등교원 임용고사의 문제점)

  • Under the banner "Toward Global Excellence in Teacher Education", Daegu National University of Education has strived for the single aim of excellence in pre-service and in-service for over fifty years. Specially the department of Mathematics education aims to develope students' mathematical power which is related to elementary school mathematical concepts & theories. However not a few of the students seem to have test-anxiety which is relate to teacher recruitment examination. In these view, we conclude that students must have been suffered from test anxiety. Consequently the results of the study are follow. $\cdot$ 2nd paper-pencil test of the elementary school teacher recruitment(2010) has been emphasized on statement of examinee logocal thought about all 10 subjects. $\cdot$ 3rd test of the elementary school teacher recruitment(2010) has been focused on only speaking english of examinee. Thus we conclude that these Recruitment Examination(2010) couldn't minimize the test anxiety of the students. Therefore next test of the elementary school Teacher Recruitment should contain on mathematical problem-solving in elementary school mathematics textbooks.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of mathematics teachers' recognition and understanding of mathematics education curriculum at the college of education. The subject of this study is 30 secondary school mathematics teachers who graduated from the department of mathematics education at the college of education. To accomplish this study, loather's knowledge is divided into two groups such as 'subject matter knowledge' (ready-made mathematics) and 'pedagogical content knowledge' (school mathematics and its teaching planning and methods). As a result, this study examines which subjects are required to achieve the pedagogical content knowledge in order to be a professional mathematics teacher.

Analysis of Mathematical Quality of Instruction between Preservice and Inservice Mathematics Teachers (MQI를 이용한 예비교사와 현직교사의 수학수업의 질 분석)

  • This study analyzed the quality of mathematics classes with observations using the instrument, MQI(Mathematical Quality of Instruction). Class recordings and interviews were conducted on 2 pre-service teachers and 4 in-service teachers. This study recorded and analyzed 3 or 4 classes for each mathematics teacher by using revised MQI. There were a total of 8 raters: 2 or 3 raters analyzed each class. MQI has four dimensions: Richness of the Mathematics, Working with Students and Mathematic, Errors and Imprecision, Student Participation in Meaning-Making and Reasoning. In the dimension of 'Richness of Mathematics', all teachers had good scores of 'explanations of teacher' but had lower scores of 'linking and connections', 'multiple procedures or solution methods' and 'developing mathematical generalizations.' In the dimension of 'Working with Students and Mathematics', two in-service teachers who have worked and having more experience had higher scores than others. In the dimension of 'Errors and Imprecision', all teachers had high scores. In the dimension of 'Student Participation in Meaning-Making and Reasoning', two pre-service teachers had contrast and also two in-service teachers who hadn't worked not long had contrast. Implications were deducted from finding to improving quality of mathematics classes.

A Study on the Difficulties of Pre-service Mathematics Teachers in the Discrete Mathematics Learning (예비 수학교사들이 이산수학 학습에서 겪는 어려움 분석)

  • This study aims to improve teacher education by analyzing the causes and backgrounds of which pre-service mathematics teachers experience learning difficulties on the topic of discrete mathematics. To this end, we conducted a questionnaire and an evaluation on the topic of discrete mathematics, and the obtained data were analyzed. The results show that (1) pre-service mathematics teachers need to share their perceptions of the need for discrete mathematics education; (2) a review of the adequacy of the discrete mathematical content and its credits are required; (3) the causes of their learning difficulties need to be looked at from a different perspective than the learning factors. And two implications were obtained. First, it is necessary to study the systematicity and sequence of content elements of discrete mathematics in the aspect of its continuity of curriculum of secondary school and university. Second, it is required consideration for adjusting the ratio of discrete mathematics to secondary teachers' employment examination.

A Cross-National Study on Pre-service Teachers' Conceptions of Equitable Mathematics Teaching (수학수업에서 공평성에 관한 한국과 미국 예비초등교사의 인식 비교 연구)

  • This cross-national study examines the similarities and differences between Korean and U.S. pre-service teachers' views on equitable mathematics teaching. Pre-service teachers enrolled in mathematics education courses at the two sites (Korea, n=51; U.S., n=33) were administered a survey consisting of the following: (a) items about pre-service teachers' views on equity relative to mathematical ability, classroom policies and practices, and access to learning opportunities, (b) items about pre-service teachers' agreement in their views on recommended practices, and (c) items about participants' past learning experiences in an equitable learning environment as students. Similarities were found between the sites regarding the following: (a) advocating for equitable mathematics teaching, and (b) conceptualizing equitable teaching as a way to support the learning of less capable students. Differences were found with regard to nurturing growth mindsets in mathematics; positioning toward equal opportunities and outcomes in learning; and relating to grouping as collaborative learning strategies.

The utilization of cooperative microteaching for pre-service mathematics teachers (중등수학 예비교사 교육에서 협동마이크로티칭의 활용 가능성 탐색)

  • The purpose of this article is to suggest using cooperative microteaching in pre-service mathematics teachers education based on their perceptions of it after actual application case. The background of this study is that cooperative learning came into the highlight as a good method to cultivate teachers' competencies for creativity and character education as well as students' creativity and character in the mathematics classroom. 20 pre-service mathematics teachers participated in their cooperative microteaching and 16 of them responded to the survey. The collected data showed that the merits of cooperative microteaching are to ease the burden of preparing for class, to discuss how to teach mathematics, to debate what lesson is better, to receive valuable feedback form their peer, and so on. Also, it provided them with the chance for self-improvement in that they kept to make up for the week points in their teaching behavior. Meanwhile, they wanted longer time to experience their teaching and their own lesson.

Changes in Describing and Commenting on Elementary Mathematics Instruction by Prospective Teachers (예비 교사의 초등 수학 수업에 대한 기술과 비평의 변화)

  • Although teacher preparation programs are important for prospective teachers to build a foundation of teaching expertise, there has been lack of research in this area. This paper analyzed in what ways prospective teachers' ability in describing and commenting on elementary mathematics instruction has been changed while they were taking in the course of teaching elementary school mathematics. The results of this study showed that in late description the teachers tended to notice the core flow of a lesson and the use of instructional strategies appropriate to the mathematical content to be taught. They also tended to comment on instructional strategies and mathematical discourse from the teacher's perspective and evaluated them without alternative approaches. A noticeable change occurred in late comments wherein prospective teachers considered both the teacher and students, supported their comments by theories they had learned through the course, and interpreted the classroom events they had noticed. Building on these results, this paper closes with implications of teacher education programs to enhance prospective teachers' ability to analyze elementary mathematics lessons.
