While the external axial compressive load is applied to only the shell edge of stringer-stiffened shell in the most of numerical and analytical previous studies (entitled as conventional approach), a part of external load is applied to the stringers in real conditions. It leads to decrease the accuracy of the axial buckling load calculated by the conventional eigenvalue analysis approach performed in the most of previous studies. In this study, the distribution of stress in the pre-buckling analysis was enhanced by applying the axial external compressive load to both shell and stringers to perform an accurate eigenvalue analysis of the stringer-stiffened composite shell. In this regard, a model was developed in FORTRAN environment to simulate the laminated stringer-stiffened shell under axial compressive load using finite strip method. The axial buckling load of the shell was obtained through eigenvalue analysis. A comparison was made between the results obtained from the model and those available in the previous studies to evaluate the validity of the results obtained from the model. Through a parametric study, the effects of different parameters such as stringer properties and composite layup on the buckling load of the shell under different loading patterns were investigated. The results indicated that in some cases, the axial buckling load obtained for the conventional approach used in the most of previous studies is significantly overestimated or underestimated due to neglecting the stringer in distribution of external load applied to the stringer-stiffened shell. According to the results obtained from the parametric study, some graphs were derived to show the accuracy of the axial buckling load obtained from the conventional approach utilized in the literature.

The effect of thermal cycling on bond strength and residual stress at the interface between benzocyclobutene (BCB) and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposited (PECVD) silicon dioxide ($SiO_2$) coated silicon wafers were evaluated by four point bending and wafer curvature techniques. Wafers were bonded using a pre-established baseline process. Thermal cycling was done between room temperature and a maximum peak temperature. In thermal cycling performed with 350 and $400^{\circ}C$ peak temperature, the bond strength increased substantially during the first thermal cycle. The increase in bond strength is attributed to the relaxation in residual stress by the condensation reaction of the PECVD $SiO_2$: this relaxation leads to increases in deformation energy due to residual stress and bond strength.
Low-field anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) was measured with 247 samples from 17 sites of Pre-Cambrian anorthositic rocks in the Hadong-Sanchong area, southwestern part of the Ryongnam Block. Tectonic stress-direction is defined by the minimum susceptibility (k3) direction, and flow-direction by the maximum susceptibility (k1) direction. Five sites rendered self-consistent NW-SE site-mean tectonic stress-direction. Even though a general fold test for every site was not possible due to the homoclinal nature of the bedding attitudes, a site with various bedding attitudes shows far better clustering of the k3-direction before the bedding-tilt correction. The in-situ NW-SE tectonic stress-direction is consistent over the study area and compatible with petrographic foliation observed in metamorphic rocks in and arround the study area, suggesting a regional compressive force acted after the emplacement of the anorthositic rocks. On the other hand, flow-directions obtained from six sites varies from site to site. Strong-field IRM experiments show predominance of titanomagnetites over a small amount of hematite in some samples.

Objective : $Dynesys^{(R)}$ is one of the pedicle-based dynamic lumbar stabilization systems and good clinical outcome has been reported. However, the cylindrical spacer between the heads of the screws undergoes deformation during assembly of the system. The pre-strain probably change the angle of instrumented spine with time and oblique-shaped spacer may reduce the pre-strain. We analyzed patients with single-level stabilization with $Dynesys^{(R)}$ and simulated oblique-shaped spacer with finite element (FE) model analysis. Methods : Consecutive 14 patients, who underwent surgery for single-level lumbar spinal stenosis and were followed-up more than 24 months (M : F=6 : 8; age, $58.7{\pm}8.0$ years), were analyzed. Lumbar lordosis and segmental angle at the index level were compared between preoperation and postoperative month 24. The von Mises stresses on the obliquely-cut spacer ($5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$) were calculated under the compressive force of 400 N and 10 Nm of moment with validated FE model of the L4-5 spinal motion segment with segmental angle of $16^{\circ}$. Results : Lumbar lordosis was not changed, while segmental angle was changed significantly from $-8.1{\pm}7.2^{\circ}$ to $-5.9{\pm}6.7^{\circ}$ (p<0.01) at postoperative month 24. The maximum von Mises stresses were markedly decreased with increased angle of the spacer up to $20^{\circ}$. The stress on the spacer was uneven with cylindrical spacer but it became even with the $15^{\circ}$ oblique spacer. Conclusion : The decreased segmental lordosis may be partially related to the pre-strain of Dynesys. Further clinical and biomechanical studies are required for relevant use of the system.
A series of three-dimensional (3D) parametric finite element analyses have been performed to study the influence of the relative locations of pile tips with regards to the tunnel position on the behaviour of single piles and pile groups to adjacent tunnelling in weathered soil. When the pile tips are inside the influence zone, which considers the relative pile tip location with respect to the tunnel position, tunnelling-induced pile head settlements are larger than those computed from the Greenfield condition. However, when the pile tips are outside the influence zone, a reverse trend is obtained. When the pile tips are inside the influence zone, the tunnelling-induced tensile pile forces mobilised, but when the pile tips are outside the influence zone, compressive pile forces are induced because of tunnelling, depending on the shear stress transfer mechanism at the pile-soil interface. For piles connected to a cap, tensile and compressive forces are mobilised at the top of the centre and side piles, respectively. It has been shown that the increases in the tunnelling-induced pile head settlements have resulted in reductions of the apparent factor of safety up to approximately 43% when the pile tips are inside the influence zone, therefore severely affecting the serviceability of the piles. The pile behaviour, when considering the location of the pile tips with regards to the tunnel, has been analysed in great detail by taking the tunnelling-induced pile head settlements, axial pile forces, apparent factor of safety of the piles and shear transfer mechanism into account.
A reliable concrete constitutive material model is critical for an accurate numerical analysis simulation of reinforced concrete structures under extreme dynamic loadings including impact or blast. However, the formulation of concrete material model is challenging and entails numerous input parameters that must be obtained through experimentation. This paper presents a damage scale analytical model to characterize concrete material for its pre- and post-peak behavior. To formulate the damage scale model, statistical regression and finite element analysis models were developed leveraging twenty existing experimental data sets on concrete compressive strength. Subsequently, the proposed damage scale analytical model was implemented in the finite element analysis simulation of a reinforced concrete pier subjected to vehicle impact loading and the response were compared to available field test data to validate its accuracy. Field test and FEA results were in good agreement. The proposed analytical model was able to reliably predict the concrete behavior including its post-peak softening in the descending branch of the stress-strain curve. The proposed model also resulted in drastic reduction of number of input parameters required for LS-DYNA concrete material models.
Smart sensors and actuators have recently been developed. In this study, first, small-diameter fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors developed by the author, whose cladding and polyimide coating diameters were 40 and $52{\mu}m$, respectively, were embedded inside a laminate without resin-rich regions around sensors and the deterioration of mechanical properties of the composite laminate. The small-diameter FBG sensor was embedded in $0^{\circ}$ ply of a CFRP laminate for the detection of transverse cracks in $90^{\circ}$ ply of the laminate. The reflection spectra from the FBG sensor were measured at various tensile stresses. The spectrum became broad and had some peaks with an increase of the transverse crack density. Furthermore, the theoretical calculation reproduced the change in the spectrum very well. These results show that the small-diameter FBG sensors have a potential to detect the occurrence of transverse cracks through the change in the form of the spectrum, and to evaluate the transverse crack density quantitatively by the spectrum width. On the other hand, shape memory alloy (SMA) films were used to suppress the initiation and growth of transverse cracks in CFRP laminates. Pre-strained SMA films were embedded between laminas in CFRP laminates and then heated to introduce the recovery stress in SMA films and compressive stresses in the weakest plies ($90^{\circ}$ ply). The effects of recovery stresses are demonstrated in the experiments and well predicted using the shear-lag analysis and the nonlinear constitutive equation of SMA films.

In the current work, a series of three-dimensional finite element analyses have been carried out to understand the behaviour of pre-existing single piles to adjacent tunnelling by considering the tunnel face pressures and the relative location of pile tips with respect to the tunnel. The numerical modelling has analysed the effect of the face pressures on the pile behaviour. The analyses concentrate on the ground settlements, the pile head settlements, the axial pile forces and the shear stress transfer mechanism at the pile-soil interface. The head settlements of the pile (the vertical distance between the pile and the tunnel: 0.25D, where D is the tunnel diameter) directly above the tunnel crown with the face pressure 50% of the in-situ horizontal soil stress at the tunnel springline decreased by about 38% compared to corresponding settlements with a face pressure 25% of the in-situ horizontal soil stress at the tunnel springline. Furthermore, it was found that the smaller the face pressure, the larger the tunnelling-induced ground movements and the axial pile forces were and the higher the degree of the shear strength mobilisation at the pile-soil interface. When the piles were outside the tunnel influence zone, compressive pile forces were developed due to tunnelling. It has been found that the ground settlements and the pile settlements are heavily affected by the face pressures and the position of the pile tip relative to the tunnel. In addition, the computed results have been compared with relevant studies previously reported in literature. The behaviour of the piles has been extensively examined and analysed by considering the key features in great detail.
The concrete creep deformation of a hybrid composite section can cause additional deformation of the composite section and the stress relaxation of pre-compressive stress on the concrete section due to partial restraint of the deformation. In this study, the stress relaxation coefficient method (SRCM) is derived for simple analysis of complicate hybrid or composite sections for engineering purpose. Also, an equation of the stress relaxation coefficient (SRC) required for the SRCM is proposed. The SRCM is derived with the parameters of a creep coefficient, section and loading properties using the same method as the constant-creep step-by-step method (CC-SSM). The errors of the SRCM is improved by using the proposed SRC equation than the average SRC's which were estimated from the CC-SSM. The root mean square error (RMSE) of the SRCM with the proposed SRC equation for concrete with creep coefficient less than 3 was less than 1.2% to the creep deformation at the free condition and was 3.3% for the 99% reliability. The proposed SRC equation reflects the internal restraint of composite sections, and the effective modulus of elasticity computed with the proposed SRC can be used effectively to estimate the rigidity of a composite section in a numerical analysis which can be applied in analysis of the external restrain effect of boundary conditions.

In this study, we studied the ride quality considering the deterioration effects of the three type couplers (single, double, and ring types) for EMUs. In order to know the impact occurred when an urban transit vehicle is under breaking, we tested the conditions of the service brake and the emergency brake. Normal coupler models without any slack showed similar dynamic performance results under all breaking conditions. But if the couplers become old, the initial pre-stresses are removed because of permanent compressive deformation in rubber. For three types of the old coupler models without the initial pre-stress, we evaluated dynamic performances of each type. As the results, the maximum and average acceleration levels of the double type and the ring type were similarly low in all conditions. But the accelerations of the single type coupler was high when compared to those of the double and ring types. In addition, Jerk value of the single type model associated with ride quality was high up to 15 times to the ring type in condition of the service braking in empty vehicle weight. Jerk value of the double type model was high up to 6 times to the ring type.
