  • RF power amplifier requires linearization in order to reduce adjacent channel interference. And most of the existing linearization algorithms assume that a PA has memory-less nonlinearity. But for the wider bandwidth signal, the memory effect of PA cannot be ignored. This paper investigates digital pre-distortion by use of a memory polynomial model which compensates for amplifier nonlinearity and memory effect. The look-up table based implementation scheme is used to reduce the computational complexity of the pre-distortion block. The linearization performance is demonstrated on wideband CDMA signal and class AB high power amplifier.

  • A complex energy saving device has been developed for middle class vessels. The propulsive performance of the developed device is described through a model test. The pre-swirl stator, which recovers the rotational energy of the propeller slipstream, is a well-known energy saving device for large vessels. The pre-swirl stator for a large vessel is usually cast as a part of the stern frame and has a high cost. The manufacture of a cast stator for an existing vessel is almost impossible. The complex device that was developed can be fitted on astern frame by welding. The model tests show a 4-6% efficiency gain for middle class vessels with the developed appendages compared to those with bare hulls.

  • This study examined whether there are underlying latent classes of growth trajectories of maternal depression in the Korean population. Data from the first phase of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) of the Institute of Child Care and Education (KICCE) were used for this study. The final sample of participants included 1,471 mothers, who completed three interviews: at birth, at one month, and at four months. A two-class model consisting of depression (12.3%) and non-depression (87.7%) was considered the best-fitting solution using Mplus 3.13. The changes in postnatal depression in the Korean population within four weeks after childbirth, which is the period of "postpartum onset", seem to be important. Logistic regression analysis showed that duration of breast-feeding and planned pregnancy effects were significantly associated with trajectory class membership.

  • This article examined the effects of self-reflecting journal writing in speaking class on academic performance of science and engineering students. To assess the effect, 27 science and engineering students from the "Speech and Life" class were asked to keep a self-reflecting journal. Pre and post-intervention surveys were conducted, followed by the analysis of learning effect and satisfaction. In addition to the pre and post-intervention surveys, an additional survey on speaking ability was conducted at the same time and the change of the students' ability was assessed. Results showed that after writing self-reflection journals, participants' learning effect and satisfaction has increased, and their speaking performance was also improved.

  • In the age of technology and information, communicating with people from different cultures is significantly important. Regarding this perspective, communicative competence has been the focus in the EFL educational context. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of using movies in a culture-integrated English reading course at the college level. In order to achieve this purpose, pre- and post-reading comprehension tests, pre- and post-surveys and in-depth interviews were conducted. The results of data analysis showed that using movies in the culture-integrated English reading class positively affected students' interest and confidence towards English reading as well as their reading achievement. In this respect, we suggest that cultural teaching through movies in English classes should be learner-centered so that learners can proactively analyze and understand different cultural backgrounds shown in the movies and build schemas which can be used in their learning process.

  • This paper studies the effect of flipping the classroom in undergraduate physics classes using English as the medium of instruction (EMI). Data on student use of learning strategies, course satisfaction level and perceptions of the flipped classes were collected through a survey including close-ended and open-ended questions. The sample size was 71 students in flipped classes, with 60 students in non-flipped classes used as a control group (total N=131). It was found that students in the flipped classes showed greater intrinsic goal orientation (p<.05), control of learning beliefs (p<.05), and use of critical thinking (p<.01) than those in the non-flipped classes. While the survey highlighted problems of student engagement with the pre-class activities, students who had previous experience with online classes committed more time to pre-class, suggesting that engagement may improve with exposure to blended learning. It is concluded that the flipped classroom helps students develop their identities as self-directed learners, but that more support is necessary for weaker students in the EMI context. Implications are drawn for the content design of flipped EMI classrooms.

  • On-line learning has been adopted as a major educational method due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students and faculties got accustomed to on-line educational environment as they experienced it during the COVID-19 pandemic. Development of various technologies and social requirement for educational renovation lay groundwork for on-line learning as well. Therefore, on-line learning or blended learning will be likely to go on after the end of COVID-19 pandemic and it is necessary to prepare the guidelines for effective utilizing on-line learning. The primary purpose of this study is to examine the learning behaviors and the learning effects by using LMS data. Learning behaviors were measured in terms of learning time and access frequency for pre-recorded video lectures targeting computer-practice classes. The results of empirical analysis reveal that frequency was the significant predictor of course achievements but learning time was not. The findings of empirical analysis will provide insights that the effective planning and designing on-line classes based on learning behaviors are key to enhancing learning effects and learner's satisfaction.

  • In the present study, we examined the influence of prestrain on creep strength of Class M alloy(STS310S) and Class A(STS310J1TB) alloys containing precipitates. Prestrain was given by prior creep at a higher stress than the following creep stresses. Creep behaviour before and after stress change and creep rate of pre-strianed specimens were compared with that of virgin specimens. Pre-straining produced the strain region where the strain rate was lower than that of a virgin specimen both for STS310J1TB and STS310S steels. The reason for this phenomenon was ascribable to the viscous motion of dislocations, the interaction between dislocations and precipitates in a STS310J1TB steel, and the interaction of dislocations with sub-boundaries in a STS310S steel which has the higher dislocation density and smaller subgrain size resulted from pre-straining at higher stress.

  • This study aims to analyze the effects of explicit lexical collocation instruction on grammatical collocation knowledge, by focusing on the preposition collocations. The forty participants consisting of twenty men and twenty women are currently freshmen English majors in college. They responded to the questionnaire on their basic lexical learning strategies in pre-post tests, and carried out a lexical collocation test and a preposition collocation test as pre-post tests. They took the open class on the lexical collocations(LC) 5 times, but they did not concretely study any grammatical collocations(GC). Each test is analyzed and compared with pre-post tests by SPSS 12.0. From all the analyses, it was first revealed that most students who didn't know about the concepts, types and uses of collocations became aware of them after the class. The effects of the lexical collocations on the lexical collocation knowledge were quite revealing. Second, the correlations between the lexical collocations and grammatical collocations were not significant, although relations among the lexical collocations were quite significant. Finally, some suggestions for methods of mixed lexical chunks instruction are made for students' productive skills. Also, it is suggested that more profound attention should be paid to giving direct instructions on the basis of the lexico-grammatical continuum between LC and GC.
