As main memory get cheaper, it becomes increasingly affordable to load entire index of DBMS and to access the index. Since speed gap between CPU and main memory is growing bigger, many researches to reduce a cost of main memory access are under the progress. As one of those, cache conscious trees can reduce the cost of main memory access. Since cache conscious trees reduce the number of cache miss by compressing data in node, cache conscious trees can reduce the cost of main memory. Existing cache conscious trees use only fixed one compression technique without consideration of properties of data in node. First, this paper proposes the DC-tree that uses various compression techniques and change data layout in a node according to properties of data in order to reduce cache miss. Second, this paper proposes the level of compression locality that describes properties of data in node by formula. Third, this paper proposes Forced Partial Decomposition (FPD) that reduces the nutter of cache miss. DC-trees outperform 1.7X than B+-tree, 1.5X than simple prefix B+-tree, and 1.3X than pkB-tree, in terms of the number of cache misses. Since proposed DC-trees can be adopted in commercial main memory database system, we believe that DC-trees are practical result.

This study presents a sustainable design method that optimizes the embodied energy of concrete beam based on the concept of sustainable development that effectively utilizes natural resource and energy within the range that our succeeding generation can afford to utilize. In order to get the flexural strength carrying the ultimate load, concrete beam sections are designed by optimization that consists of the embodied energy as a objective function and the requirements of design code as constrained conditions. The sustainable design can be used to minimize the embodied energy consumed in material production, construction, operation, demolition of the infrastructure. As a result of comparison of the cost and the embodied energy optimizations based on practical beam sections, it is shown that 20% embodied energy saving and 35% $CO_2$ emission saving are achieved by sacrificing 10% cost increase. The sustainable design method provides a new effective methodology that manages the strength design concept based on cost minimization together with economic feasibility and sustainability. In addition, the method is expected to be applied to more various structural design practices.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the causal model of nurses' organizational commitment. Based on literature review and Fishbein's behavioral intentions model ((Fishbein. 1967: Fishbein & Ajzen. 1975). the organizational commitment was conceptualized within a motivational framework that mediate between antecedents variables and outcome variables. Antecedent variables were pay, promotional chances. continuing education opportunity. rigidity of the administration. paticipative decision making, latitude, group support, role conflict, work load, need for achievement. experience and pride for professional nursing. Outcome variable was turnover intention. The subjects were 373 nurses who were working at 2 large general hospitals located in Seoul. It represents a response rate of 94%. Data for this study was collected from August 29 to September 22 in 1997 by Questionnaire. Path analysis with LISREL 7.16 prigram was used to test the fit of the proposed conceptual model to data and to examine the causal relationships among variables. The result showed that both the proposed model and the modified model fit the data excellently. It needs to be notified, however. that path analysis can not count measurment errors: measurement error can attenuate estimates of coefficient and explanatory power. Nontheless the model revealed considerable explanatory power for organizational commitment (58%), pride for professional nursing (50%) and turnover intention(40%). In predicting nurses' organizational commitment, the findings of this study clearly demonstrated 'the pride for professional nursing' might be the most important variables of all the antecedent variables. Group support, role conflict, need for achievement were also found to be important determinants for the organizational commitment and turnover intention, The result showed experience might be a predictor for 'pride for professional nursing' and 'turnover intention' but not 'organizational commitment', 'Rigidity of the administration' and latitude were also found to have important roles in predictingr the organizational commitment, while participative decision making might have an impact on turnover intention. On the other hand promotional chance had an influence on all the outcome variables, while pay only on turnover intention. In predicting turnover intention, the result clearly revealed 'the pride for professional nursing' and 'organizational commitment' might be the most powerful predictors among all the variables. Theses results were discussed, including directions for the future research and practical implications drawn from the research were suggested.

The composite frame system with reinforced concrete column and steel beam has some advantages in the structural efficiency by complementing the shortcomings between the two systems. The system, however has also a lot of problems in practical design and construction process due to the material dissimilarities. Considering these circumstances, this research is aimed at the development of the composite structural system which enables the steel beams to be connected to the R/C columns with higher structural safety and economy. Basically the proposed connection system is composed of four split tees, structural angles reinforced by stiffener, high strength steel rods, connecting plates and shear plates. The structural tests have been carried out to verify the moment transfer mechanism from beam flange to steel rods or connecting plates through the angle reinforced by siffener. The four prototype specimens have been tested until the flange of beam reached the plastic states. From the tests, no distinct material dissimilarities between concrete and steel have been detected and the stress transfer through wide flange beam - structural angle - high strength steel rod or connecting plate is very favorable.
Nuclear energy is expected to meet the growing energy demand while avoiding CO2 emission. However, the problem of accumulating spent fuel from current nuclear power plants which is mainly composed of uranium oxides should be addressed. One of the most practical solutions is to reduce the spent oxide fuel and recycle it. Next-generation fuel cycles demand innovative features such as a reduction of the environmental load, improved safety, efficient recycling of resources, and feasible economics. Pyroprocessing based on molten salt electrolysis is one of the key technologies for reducing the amount of spent nuclear fuel and destroying toxic waste products, such as the long-life fission products. The oxide reduction process based on the electrochemical reduction in a LiCl-$Li_2O$ electrolyte has been developed for the volume reduction of PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor) spent fuels and for providing metal feeds for the electrorefining process. To speed up the electrochemical reduction process, the influences of the feed form for the cathode and the type of anode shroud on the reduction rate were investigated.
In this paper we have attempted to bring the wavelet transform theory to the dynamic response conversion algorithm. This algorithm is proposed for the problem of estimating the displacement data by defining the transformed responses. In this algerian, the displacement response can be obtained from the measured acceleration records by integration without requiring the knowledge of the initial velocity and displacement information. The advantage of the wavelet transform over either a pure spectral or temporal decomposition of the signal is that the pertinent signals features can be characterized in the time-frequency plane. In the response conversion procedure using the wavelet decomposition signals, not only the static component can be extracted, but also the dynamic displacement component can be separated by the structural mode from the identified displacement response. The applicability of the technique is tested by an example problem using the real bridge's superstructure under several cases of moving load. If the reliability of the identified responses is ensured, it is expected that the proposed method for estimating the impact factor can be useful in the bridge's dynamic test. This method can be useful in those practical cases when the direct measurement of the displacement is difficult as in the dynamic studies of huge structure.

The main object of this research is to minimize the shock effects which frequently result in fatal damage in wind met mast on impact of barge. The collision between wind met mast and barge is generally a complex problem and it is often not practical to perform rigorous finite element analyses to include all effects and sequences during the collision. LS-dyna generally purpose explicit finite element code, which is a product of ANSYS software, is used to model and analyze the non-linear response of the met mast due to barge collision. A significant part of the collision energy is dissipated as strain energy and except for global deformation modes, the contribution from elastic straining can normally be neglected. On applying impact force of a barge to wind met mast, the maximum acceleration, internal energy and plastic strain were calculated for each load cases using the finite element method and then compare it, varying to the velocity of barge, with one varying to the thickness of rubber fender conditions. Hence, we restrict the present research mainly to the wind met mast and also parametric study has been carried out with various velocities of barge, thickness of wind met mast, thickness and Mooney-Rivlin coefficient of rubber fender with experimental data. The equation of motion of the wind met mast is derived under the assumption that it was ignored vertical movement effect of barge on sea water. Such an analyzing method which was developed so far, make it possible to determine the proper size and material properties of rubber fender and the optimal moving conditions of barge, and finally, application method can be suggested in designing process of rubber fender considering barge impact.

In general, the effects of steel ribs are not considered in the numerical analysis of tunnel design. However, attempts have been increased recently to consider these effects in the analysis of shallow tunnels in soft ground, based on the fact that the steel ribs embedded in the shotcrete take a role to support some portion of the redistributed load due to excavation. In such analyses, the steel ribs can be considered in four different methods: (1) a conventional method where the steel ribs are not considered, (2) a method using the equivalent composite cross section in which the bending moment of shotcrete is not considered, (3) a method using the equivalent composite cross section in which both the compressive stress and the bending moment for the shotcrete and steel rib are considered, and (4) a method using beam elements for the shotcrete and the steel rib, respectively. These methods are adopted in the numerical analysis using FLAC 2D to investigate stresses of both the shotcrete and the steel rib. The overall results show that the analyses are more practical and economical when the effects of steel rib are considered fer the methods (2), (3), and (4). Since the results of those analyses considering steel rib capacity may be different according to the ground condition, it will be necessary to consider the appropriate method among them in accordance with design conditions.
One of the next frontiers in structural wind engineering is the design of tall buildings using performance-based approaches. Currently, tall buildings are being designed using provisions in the building codes and standards to meet an acceptable level of public safety and serviceability. However, recent studies in wind and earthquake engineering have highlighted the conceptual and practical limitations of the code-oriented design methods. Performance-based wind design (PBWD) is the logical extension of the current wind design approaches to overcome these limitations. Towards the development of PBWD, in this paper, we systematically review the advances made in this field, highlight the research gaps, and provide a basis for future research. Initially, the anatomy of the Wind Loading Chain is presented, in which emphasis was given to the early works of Alan G. Davenport. Next, the current state of practice to design tall buildings for wind load is presented, and its limitations are highlighted. Following this, we critically review the state of development of PBWD. Our review on PBWD covers the existing design frameworks and studies conducted on the nonlinear response of structures under wind loads. Thereafter, to provide a basis for future research, the nonlinear response of simple yielding systems under long-duration turbulent wind loads is studied in two phases. The first phase investigates the issue of damage accumulation in conventional structural systems characterized by elastic-plastic, bilinear, pinching, degrading, and deteriorating hysteretic models. The second phase introduces methods to develop new performance objectives for PBWD based on joint peak and residual deformation demands. In this context, the utility of multi-variate demand modeling using copulas and kernel density estimation techniques is presented. This paper also presents joined fragility curves based on the results of incremental dynamic analysis. Subsequently, the efficiency of tuned mass dampers and self-centering systems in controlling the accumulation of damage in wind-excited structural systems are investigated. The role and the need for explicit modeling of uncertainties in PBWD are also discussed with a case study example. Lastly, two unified PBWD frameworks are proposed by adapting and revisiting the Wind Loading Chain. This paper concludes with a summary and a proposal for future research.
