Heavy load start but light load operation is a common case in practical drive applications. When an induction motor is employed for such applications, its rated power is usually chosen according to the heavy load start. Then, during light load operation, its efficiency and power factor are low. To solve this problem, it is proposed to adjust the motor windings from the startup to the normal operation conditions. In this paper, arrangement of the adjustable windings is introduced, air gap field with different windings is investigated, and steady state operation performance under various loads is examined. It can be seen that by using proper winding arrangement both startup and operation performances are satisfactory.
Elastic buckling load of perforated steel plates is typically predicted using the finite element or conjugate load/displacement methods. In this paper an artificial neural network (ANN)-based formula is presented for the prediction of the elastic buckling load of rectangular plates having a circular cutout. By using this formula, the elastic buckling load of perforated plates can be calculated easily without setting up an ANN platform. In this study, the center of a circular cutout was chosen at different locations along the longitudinal x-axis of plates subjected to linearly varying loading. The results of the finite element method (FEM) produced by the commercial software package ANSYS are used to train and test the network. The accuracy of the proposed formula based on the trained ANN model is evaluated by comparing with the results of different researchers. The results show that the presented ANN-based formula is practical in predicting the elastic buckling load of perforated plates without the need of an ANN platform.

In this paper, a methodology to use load duration curve and the reactive power factor sensitivity of generation cost is proposed for analyzing the effects of load power factor effectively. A great deal of cases of power systems are classified into several patterns according to the characteristics using load duration curve, and the overall effects of load power factor are assessed by integrating the analysis results of load power factor in all the patterns. The reactive power sensitivity of generation cost and the integrated costs such as generation cost, investment cost, voltage variation penalty cost and CO2 emission cost are used for determining an appropriate load power factor. A systematic procedure for effective analysis of load power factor is presented. It is shown through the application to the practical power system of KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation)that the effects of load power factor can be analyzed effectively using load duration curve and reactive power factor sensitivity.

The problem of an infinite anisotropic material with a crack inclined with respect to the principal material axes is analyzed. The material is subjected to uniform biaxial load along its boundary. It is assumed that the material is homogeneous, but anisotropic. By considering the effect of the horizontal load, the distribution of stresses at the crack tip is analyzed. The problem of predicting critical stress in anisotropic solids which is a subject of considerable practical importance is examined and the effect of load biaxiality is made explicitly. The present results based on the normal stress ratio theory show significant effects of biaxial load, crack inclination angle and fiber orientation on the critical stress. The analysis is performed for a wide range of the crack angles and biaxial loads.
Hourly load forecasting has become indispensable for practical simulation of electric power system as the system become larger and more complicated. To forecast the future hourly load the cyclic behavior of electric load which follows seasonal weather, day or week and office hours is to be analyzed so that the trend of the recent behavioral change can be extrapolated for the short term. For the long term, on the other hand, the changes in the infra-structure of each electricity consumer groups should be assessed. In this paper the concept and process of hourly load forecasting for hourly load is introduced.

Dynamic load models which show the practical behavior of truss bridge subjected to moving train load are presented. Three basically approaches are available for evaluating structural response to dynamic effects : moving force, moving mass, and influence moving force and mass. Simple warren truss bridge model is selected in this research, and idealized lumped mass system, modelled as a planar structure. In the process of dynamic analysis, the uncoupled equation of motion is derived from simultaneous equation of the motion of truss bridge and moving train load. The solution of the uncoupled equations of motion is solved by Newmark-$\beta$ method. The results show that dynamic response of moving mass and static analysis considering the impact factor specified in the present railway bridge code was nearly the same. Generally, the dynamic response of moving force is somewhat greater than that of moving mass. The dynamic load models which are presented by this study are obtained relatively adequate load model when apply to a truss bridge.
A total of 99 full-scale field load tests at 22 sites were compiled for this study to elucidate several issues related to the load-displacement behaviour of belled piers under axial uplift loading, including (1) interpretation criteria to define various elastic, inelastic, and "failure" states for each load test from the load-displacement curve; (2) generalized correlations among these states and determinations to the predicted ultimate uplift resistances; (3) uncertainty in the resistance model factor statistics required for reliability-based ultimate limit state (ULS) design; (4) uncertainty associated with the normalized load-displacement curves and the resulting model factor statistics required for reliability-based serviceability limit state (SLS) design; and (5) variations of the combined ULS and SLS model factor statistics for reliability-based limit state designs. The approaches discussed in this study are practical and grounded realistically on the load tests of belled piers with minimal assumptions. The results on the characterization and uncertainty of uplift load-displacement behaviour of belled piers could be served as to extend the early contributions for reliability-based ULS and SLS designs.

Vehicle structures are composed of many substructure connected to one another by various types of mechanical joints. In vehicle engineering it is important to study these connected structures under various dynamic forces for the evaluations of fatigue life and stress concentration exactly. It is difficult to obtain the accurate load history of specified positions because of the errors such as modeling, measurement and etc. In the beginning of design exact load data are actually necessary for the fatigue strength and life analysis to minimize the cost and time of designing. In this paper, the procedure of practical dynamic force determination is developed by the combination of the principal stresses of F. E. Analysis and experiment. Least square pseudo inverse matrix is adopted to obtain in inverse matrix of analyzed stresses matrix. The error minimization method utilizes the inaccurate measured error and the shifting error that the whole data is stiffed over real data. The least square criterion is adopted to avoid these non. Finally, to verify the proposed procedure, a bus is analyzed. This measurement and prediction technology can be extended to the structural modification of any geometric shape in complex structure.

This paper discusses how to use basic strut-and-tie models(STM) for practical application. Construction of STM starts with drawing of load paths with equilibrium conditions. Understanding of structural systems including form active systems, vector active systems, and section active systems help us select appropriate systems for possible STM. Simple circular fans can be employed for load paths from concentrated forces to distributed forces. Strength of struts depends on configuration of their nodal zones which meet tension ties and effective compressive strength. The effective compressive strength of struts are assumed to be mainly influenced by transverse strain.
This paper presents a study on the structural behaviour of modular steel scaffolds through both experimental and numerical investigations. Three one-storey and three two-storey modular steel scaffolds were built and tested to failure in order to examine the structural behaviour of typical modular steel scaffolds. Details of the tests and their test results were presented in this paper. Moreover, an advanced non-linear analysis method was employed to evaluate the load carrying capacities of these scaffolds under different support conditions. Comparisons between the experimental and the numerical results on the structural behaviour of these modular steel scaffolds were also presented. Moreover, the restraining effects of external supports in practical situations were also studied through finite element methods. The predicted load carrying capacities and deformations at failure of these models under partially restrained conditions were found to be close to the experimental results. A codified design method for column buckling with modified slenderness ratios was adopted for practical design of modular steel scaffolds.
