  • This study investigates transformer losses caused by current harmonics. Electrical transformers are designed to work under sinusoidal voltage and current waves at a rated frequency. Recently, various nonlinear loads, such as power electronic converters, are connected to a power system; these converters generate current harmonics. Current harmonics increase power loss in transformers, which results in several problems, including temperature increase of the transformer and insulation damage. These problems will eventually shorten the operational life of the transformer. In this study, different types of losses caused by current harmonics in three-phase transformers are studied under linear and nonlinear load conditions. Linear loads are simulated and experimented on using pure resistance load, whereas nonlinear loads are simulated and experimented on using a three-phase twelve-pulse thyristor full-bridge rectifier. The different types of losses in three-phase transformers are evaluated analytically through the experimental result and simulation in PSiM.

  • Power transformers have a tendency of ultra-high voltage capacity as power demand increases day after day KEPCO also will have plan to supply transmission power from 345KV to 765KV in the early of 2000. Therefore, the fault by insulation destruction gives rise to large area of power failure in huge capacity transformers. On-line predictive diagnostics is very important in power transformers because of economic loss and its spreading effect. This study presents the algorithm for transformer oil analysis used KEPCO code, IEC code, gas pattern method and Dornenburg & Roger Ratio method. We also describe the MMI display of expert system programmed by Element Expert Tool(Neuron Data Inc.).

  • High reliability is essential for power transformers, and their fault causes are reportedly more related to mechanical causes than electrical ones. The transformer soundness judgment currently depends only on the electrical insulation characteristic and the chemical test of the insulation oil, so that there are few fundamental measures against the frequent mechanical damages and failures in transformers. The mechanical soundness judgment techniques are conducted through processes that include structural analysis and vibration resistance treatment during the manufacturing process of each manufacturer, but the vibration is not tested during the design, manufacturing, and operating processes since there are no detailed technical standards and procedures on the vibration problem, which are important in terms of maintenance. Therefore, in this study, vibration phenomena were measured from the 32 power transformers in operation in the substations under the Daejeon Power Transmission District Office of the Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). The vibration was measured at 24 sections ($6{\times}4$) on one side, and only the maximum values were selected from the measured vibration values. This was because the maximum vibration values more significantly affect the soundness of the transformer than the average vibration values. The vibration classes were given considering the maximum vibration based on ISO 10016-1 (2001).

  • The DGA (Dissolved Gases Analysis) technique has been widely using for fault diagnosis of the power transformers. Some electric power utility company establishes the criteria of DGA to improve reliability, because of difference of operation environment and design of power transformer. In this paper, we introduce intelligent diagnosis system for DGA result of KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Cooperation). This system can classify patterns type of gases ratio that frequently occurs in recent result of gases analysis using Fuzzy Inference. The classification of Patterns let us know that major causes of gases generation based on type of patterns. Finally, Neural Network based on patterns diagnose transformer. NN was trained using result data of DGA of actually faulted transformers recently. Result of intelligent diagnosis system is right well in comparison with actual inner inspection of transformers.

  • Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (FDS) measurements were performed on pressboard samples containing different moisture contents and on insulation system of power transformers. The results were used for evaluating sensitivity of the so-called X - Y model, which is applied for estimating moisture content in transformer insulation using the results of FDS measurements. Based on the observations of this analysis a simplified model, called X model, was introduced in which the presence of spacers in transformer insulation has been neglected. Finally, reliability of the X model was assessed by comparing estimates of moisture contents based on FDS measurements on field installed power transformers with moisture contents obtained from chemical analyses of their oil samples.

  • To cope with the high power density and low cost in switching power supply, LLC resonant converters with the two resonant tank circuits composed of resonance capacitors and two transformers are proposed in this paper. Each transformers used for the proposed resonant circuits are parallel connected in the primary and series connected in the secondary to reduce the current unbalance. The proposed LLC resonant converters are described and verified on 300W experimental prototype.

  • This paper presents new criteria for DGA(Dissolved Gases Analysis) using CDF(Cumulative Distribution Function) obtained from the data from the diagnosis of transformers operated in KEPCO over a period of 16 years. Because of differences in operating environments, construction type, oil volume, and other factors, the interpretative criteria of DGA at KEPCO differs from other standards such as IEC-60599, or Rogers and Doernenburg. To suggest the most appropriate criteria, the DGA data from transformers under normal conditions as well as from developing fault transformers were collected. Using these data, this study suggests the limitative gas level of transformers under normal operating conditions and verifies the suitability of the criteria. Because the application of this new criterion to transformers at KEPCO increases the detectable ratio of incipient faults and reduces unnecessary follow-up sampling and analysis, the new criteria yields a more reliable prediction of transformer condition.

  • In this paper, design procedures and voltage gain characteristics on LLC resonant converter with two transformers are described. Two transformers applied to LLC resonant converter are connected in series at the primary and connected in parallel at the secondary to reduce the unbalance of the primary current. Based on the theoretical analysis and simulation results, considering the characteristics of voltage gain and load variation, prototype of the 400W LLC resonant converter for 50inch PDP TV power module is built and the design procedures through the experimental results are verified.

  • A new phase shift full bridge (PSFB) converter with serially connected two transformers for telecommunication equipments of several hundred watts is proposed. The main features of the proposed converter are a wide input voltage range, an easiness to meet the requirement for zero voltage switching (ZVS) condition at a light load, and a small output voltage ripple. Furthermore, the serially connected two transformers can replace both a main transformer and an output inductor since the two transformers act as not only a main transformer but an output inductor by turns. Therefore, there is no need to use an output inductor, then the proposed converter features high power density. A mode analysis, design equations through a large signal modeling, and experimental results are presented to verify the validity of the proposed converter.
