Renewable energy has been increasingly used and widely acclaimed as one of the solutions to rampant environmental problems. Among numerous kinds of renewable sources, the penetration rate of the PV system is relatively higher than that of others due to ease of installation. However, one disadvantage of the PV system is its dependence on weather condition. The PV system is especially critical when it is used for standalone systems because it cannot operate when the power generated from a PV module is not enough. Therefore, PV systems are often used with an energy storage system, such as batteries, to store backup energy when the weather condition is insufficient to supply power to the system. Blackout time can be reduced by increasing the size of the energy storage system, but it is a trade-off with system cost. In this work, optimal sizing of a standalone PV system is proposed to supply power to the system without blackout. The sizing of PV modules and batteries is performed by a simulation based on actual irradiation data collected during the past five years. The Life cycle costing of each system is evaluated to determine an optimal set of PV modules and batteries among several different combinations. The standalone PV system designed by the proposed method can supply power to the system with no interruption as long as the weather condition is similar to those of the past five years.
To comply with CE marking requirements, the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and low-voltage directive (LVD) tests are conducted on the sub-racks of International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) AC/DC converters and bypass switches. The EMC tests consist of a series of tests, including the electromagnetic interference test, the electromagnetic field immunity test, and the rapid transient burst immunity test. In the LVD test, the electric shock protection test, the xcessive temperature limit and heat resistance of equipment tests, and the fire spread prevention test are performed. This work presents and reviews the European Directive for EMC/LVD and introduces the methods of EMC and LVD tests for the sub-racks of AC/DC converters and bypass switches. It also evaluates the test method and results to meet the European Directive requirements for CE marking. The sub-racks of ITER AC/DC converters and bypass switches successfully pass the EMC and LVD tests.
Recently, a power supply system of the telecommunication equipments with monitoring function has been widely studied. In the power supply system which is apart from the central station, it is required to check and test the operating states of the system at the central station. In this paper, the power supply system with monitoring function is discussed. In the system, the Full-Bridge converter is designed as a power supply and it has the ratings of DC 280-340V input and DC 48V, 480W output. And the monitoring part of the system is composed of a voltage and current sensing unit A/D converter, I/O card, and a personal computer. The operating states of the system is monitored by checking the voltage and current variation at input and output, and it is represented by graphical modes. By conducting the experiment, it is confirmed that the operating states of the system is well monitored.
Currently, to overcome the limit of a 14V power supply system and to enhance the stability of this system high and to make the fuel efficiency better, a research development of a 42V power supply system is actively the progress. As an intermediate step to change into an unity power supply system, a 42V/14V dual power supply system uses a DC/DC Converter as one of structure elements. Considering the main electric power sources in the next generation of the car is a 42V system a 14V power supply system has advantages as follows : In be managed efficiently and to increase the redundancy at start, to jump start with any vehicles, etc. We need the introduction of a hi-directional converter that can flow the energy each other in a dual 42V-l2V system. This paper proposed the ZVS hi-directional CUK DC/DC converter which decrease the weight with the size of the DC/DC Converter and minimize the loss when the switching happen. In this paper, a circuit design method and an action principle of the circuit was proposed. To verify the proposed circuit, a comprehensive evaluation with theoretical analysis, simulation results is presented.
This paper proposes a low cost hot swap operation circuit of a parallel operation power supply for servers. Hot swap function for server power system is essential in 24 hour operation system such as internet data center, server, factory and etc. Server power supplies used in internet data centers have two or more parallel operations with the hot swap operation. However, the cost of the power supply is high because the controller IC for hot swap operation is very expensive. Therefore, this paper proposes a parallel-operated power supply with a low-cost hot swap controller for servers. The proposed system can operate hot swap function by using discrete devices and reduce the cost by more than 50%. A 1.2kW prototype system is implemented to verify the proposed low cost hot swap controller.
In this study we examined the method to estimate numerically the amount of the regenerated power and the excess regenerated power produced in the DC electric power supply system for the urban light rail transit system. And their economic feasibilities are also studied. For this study DC electric power supply system is simulated and the numerical analysis of the regenerated power and the excess regenerated power are conducted. The study result on the sample system shows that the facility to consume the excess regenerated power or the inverting equipment to reuse the excess regenerated power in the electric substation is feasible economically.
This paper presents a power supply for gate drivers, which uses a magnetic resonance wireless power transfer system. Unlike other methods where multiple antennas are used to supply power for the gate drivers, the proposed method uses a single antenna in an insulated receiver to make multiple mutually isolated power supplies. The power transmitted via single antenna is distributed to multiple power supplies for gate drivers through resonant capacitors connected in parallel that also block DC bias. This approach has many advantages over other methods, where each gate driver needs to be supplied with power using multiple receiver antennas. The proposed method will therefore lead to a reduction in production costs and circuit area. Because the proposed circuit uses a high resonance frequency of 6.78 MHz, it is possible to implement a transmitter and a receiver using a small-sized spiral printed-circuit-board-type antenna. This paper used a single phase-leg circuit configuration to experimentally verify the performance characteristics of the proposed method.

This paper presents methods to improve performance of the power supply system in a NASA deep space explorer. In the Stirling engine driven reciprocating Brushless DC (BLDC) generator, the accurate position information of the prime mover is important to diagnose the performance of the engine and prevent distortion of the output power. Since sensors to detect the position are fragile and unreliable, and conventional sensorless techniques have drawbacks in the low speed region, a novel sensorless position detection technique for the prime mover has been proposed and verified. Another major issue of the generator for the spacecraft is power density maximization. The mass of the power system is important to the mass of the satellite. Therefore, the components of the spacecraft should be lightweight. Conventional rectification methods cannot achieve the maximum power possible due to non-optimal current waveforms. The optimal current waveform for maximizing power density and minimizing machine size and weight in a nonsinusoidal power supply system has been derived, incorporated in a control system, and verified by simulation work.
The characteristics of voltage drop and THD for parallel operating 11 PCRs (Phase Controlled Rectifiers) are analysed. The PCRs are used to drive high current (1.6 kA ${\sim}$ 3.7 kADC) electromagnetic coils for electromagnets. All the PCRs operate simultaneously in pulsed mode, and the pulse shot occurs every 150 seconds. During the pulse operation the PCR output current ramps up for 4 seconds, and then keeps flat top state for 2 seconds, and finally ramps down for 4 seconds. For the flat top mode a severe voltage drop and distortion appear in the power system because transformers for the PCRs are designed considering pulsed mode operation. It is expected that the analysis method can be applied to improve the system performance including power factor and design of high power pulsed mode operating power supply systems.
It is always necessary to high performance power supplies for the magnet system in the accelerator, especially when the number of power supplies are large. When have developed the compact power supply using switching technology instead of SCR phase control. We adopt the pulse width modulation(PWM) method with a half bridge DC/DC converter. In this way, we can make a compact system with light weight and small volume. Actual system we developed is 1.2kW, 35V/35A bipolar DC power supply current precision of +/-0.02%. It is possible to mount 10 unit in a conventional 19 rack. The built in controller has an RS422 protocol to drive 10 unit by one serial port up to 1.2km distance. If we adopt RS485 protocol, one serial port can control 32 power supplies. In this paper, we will report the design and performance of the prototype power supply.
