  • This study is used to analyze the distribution of resistance factors and the relationships of flow resistance with the field measurements which consist of the total 2,604 rivers for 1,865 bed material in natural channels and 739 vegetation in vegetated channels. Resistance factor relationships and distribution range of Manning roughness coefficients and Darcy-Weisbach friction coefficients by the regression analysis are derived from the power law form as a function of flow discharge and friction slope with bed materials and vegetations in natural and vegetated rivers, respectively.

  • This study generated flood time series of ungauged catchments in the Andongdam catchment using a distributed rainfall-runoff model and data generation method, and extracted the peak flows of 50 catchments to investigate the effect of rainfall spatial variability on peak flow simulation. The model performance statistics for three gauged catchments were reasonable for all events. The flood time series of the 50 catchments were generated using distributed and mean rainfall time series as input. The distribution of the peak flow using the mean rainfall was similar or slightly different to that using the distributed rainfall when the distribution of the distributed rainfall was nearly uniform. However, the distribution of the peak flow using the mean rainfall was reduced significantly compared to that using the distributed rainfall when actual storms moved to the top or bottom of the study catchment, or the rainfall was randomly distributed. These cases were 35% of total number events. Therefore, the spatial variability of rainfall should be considered for flood simulation. In addition, the power law relationship estimated using the peak flow of gauged catchments cannot be used for estimating the peak flow of ungauged independent catchments due to latter's significant variation of the peak flow magnitude.

  • Dispersion pattern of the citrus red mite (CRM), Panonychus citri (McGregor) was determined to develop a monitoring method in the satsuma mandarin fields, Citrus unshiu L., in Jeju-do, during 1999 and 2000. CRM population was sampled by collecting leaves. Taylor's power law provided better description of mean-variance relationship for the dispersion indices compared to Iwao's patchiness regression. Slopes and intercepts of Taylor's power law from leaf samples did not differ among surveyed groves. Fixed-precision levels (D) of a sequential sampling plan were developed using Taylor's power law parameters generated from all motile stages of CRM in leaf sample. This sampling plan for leaf sample estimate was tested with resampling validation for sampling plan using 4 independent data sets. Resampling simulation analysis demonstrated that actual fixed-precision level values were better than desired D values of 0.20, 0.25 and 0.30. Required numbers for tree sampling at the density of more than 7 mites per tree were fewer than 18.

  • Improvements in disaster management has become a global necessity because the magnitude of disasters is intensifying in parallel with the increased disaster damage. The disaster risk in Korea is also increasing due to the emergence of new types of disaster; such as the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, the increase of complex disasters, and the heightened probability of a catastrophic event due to climate change. This paper aimed to identify the disaster loss-frequency relationship from 1948 to 2014 in Korea by using four types of variables. In addition, this paper found major disasters that resulted in the reformation of disaster response organizations, and inputted the deaths and economic loss attributed to those disasters into the disaster loss-frequency graph. The research result substantiated that the disaster loss-frequency relationship in Korea follows the Power Law and found the coefficients of each Power Function. Additionally, this paper found that most of the reformations of disaster response organizations happened after major disasters that concentrated societies attention and anger due to the high human and economic impact; such events are labelled as "focusing events." These focusing events, with the characteristics of a low probability and high impact, are located in the long tail of the Power Law Distribution. This paper suggests that the effective public policy for disaster response needs to be developed by paying attention to 'low probability and high impact' focusing events that are located in the long tail of the Power Law Distribution.

  • In this study we investigate the importance of the subway station using network centrality measures. For centrality measures, we have used betweenness centrality, closeness centrality, and degree centrality. A new measure called weighted betweenness centrality is proposed, that combines both traditional betweenness centrality and passenger flow between stations. Through correlation analysis and power-law analysis of passenger flow on the Seoul metropolitan subway network, we have shown that weighted betweenness centrality is a meaningful and practical measure. We have also shown that passenger flow between any two stations follows a highly skewed power-law distribution.

  • In order to infer regional flood frequency for ungauged watersheds, index flood method was applied for this study. To pursuit this given purpose, annual peak flood data for 22 watersheds located at the upstream of the Chungju Dam watershed were obtained from the spatial extension technique. The regionalization of mean annual flood was performed from extended flood data at 22 points. Based on the theory that flood discharge and watershed size follows the power law the regionalization generated the empirical relationship. These analyses were executed for the full size of the Chungju Dam watershed as one group and three different mid-size watersheds groups. From the results, the relationship between mean annual flood and watershed sizes follow the power law. We demonstrated that it is appropriate to use the relationship between specific flood discharges from the upper and lower watersheds in terms of estimating the floods for the ungaged watersheds. Therefore, not only the procedure of regional frequency analysis but also regionalizaion analaysis using finer discretization of the regions interest with respect to the regional frequency analyisis for the ungauged watersheds is important.

  • The exponential and power law functionally graded material(FGM) theory is reformulated considering the refined shear and normal deformation theory. This theory has ability to capture the both normal deformation effect and exponential and power law function in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents for material properties through the plate thickness. Navier's method has been used to solve the governing equations for all edges simply supported plates on Pasternak elastic foundation. Numerical solutions of vibration analysis of FGM plates are presented using this theory to illustrate the effects of power law index and 3-D theory of exponential and power law function on natural frequency. The relations between 3-D and 2-D higher-order shear deformation theory are discussed by numerical results. Further, effects of (i) power law index, (ii) side-to-thickness ratio, and (iii) elastic foundation parameter on nondimensional natural frequency are studied. To validate the present solutions, the reference solutions are discussed.

  • This study is a thesis of the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law in a family based on the Korean family system. This is done by analysing how the traditional social system and the style of living are reflected in korean folk songs. This I believe is a necessity in order to understand the emotions and ideas of the word 'family' of Korea and to improve the state of the relations between mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law. I have divided this into 4 essential study points. First the family system illustrated in korean folk songs are mainly father centered family system. It caused a male-oriented society and women's subordination. Second, the relationship between mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law illustrated in folk songs are mostly vertical subordinate. This is easily described as a lord and servant relationship. Third the state of relationship reflected in the folk songs from a daughter-in-law's point of view is obedience to her husband's family nostal ia to her family desperation and opposition. Lastly the state of relationship from mother in law's point of view are discord cruel treatment the rule and power which herself carry.
