Improved Charge Pump Power Factor Correction Electronic Ballast Based on Class DE Inverter

  • This paper proposes fluorescent electronic ballast with high power factor and low line input current harmonics. The system performance can be improved by a charged pump circuit. Details of design and circuit operation are described. The proposed electronic ballast is modified from single-stage half bridge class D electronic ballast by adding capacitor parallel with each power switch and setting the circuit parameter to operate under class DE inverter condition. By using this proposed method the DC bus voltage can be reduced around by 50% compare with conventional class D inverter circuit. Because the power switches are operated at zero voltage switching condition and low dv/dt of class DE switching. The experimental results show that the proper frequency of the prototype is around 50 kHz with input power factor of 0.982, $THD_i$ 10.2% at full load and efficiency of more than 90%.

  • Generally, the current controller is located inner the whole controller, so the characteristic of the current controller is important in controlling performance of the upper controller. A current control loop in motor control is designed so that it is 10 times faster than the speed control loop of the upper controller. Thus, the current controller with complex control algorithm is not proper. In this paper, the improved current controller using a conventional digital PI controller and feedforward controller for the brushless BC motor is designed.

  • In our laboratory, the control aspects are investigated in the photovoltaic power generation systems (PV systems). The PV system is very good for earth environment, but if it connects to power network system, many problems are raised (protection, voltage, harmonics etc.). In this paper, we present the result of the basic studies for the building of the PV system that amplifies the electric energy obtained from the solar cell. We consider electronic circuits in order to protect the PV system from power surge induced by lightning and also design an electronic circuit in order to detect defaults in the power network system. We would like to integrate these circuits into the PV system by considering its control equipment build by 8-bit microcomputer using various control theory (fuzzy, neural network etc.).

  • A robust controller is designed based on feedback linearization and sliding mode control to damp sub-synchronous control interaction (SSCI) in doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind power plants (WPPs) interfaced with the grid. A feedback-linearized sliding mode controller (FLSMC) is developed for the rotor-side converter (RSC) through feedback linearization, design of the sliding mode controller, and parameter tuning with the use of particle swarm optimization. A series-compensated 100-MW DFIG WPP is adopted in simulation to evaluate the effectiveness of the designed FLSMC at different compensation degrees and wind speeds. The performance of the designed controller in damping SSCI is compared with proportional-integral controller and conventional sub-synchronous resonance damping controller. Besides the better damping capability, the proposed FLSMC enhances robustness of the system under parameter variations.

DC-Link Active Power Filter for High-Power Single-Phase PWM Converters

  • Single phase converters suffer from ripple power pulsating at twice the line frequency. The ripple power is usually absorbed by a bulky capacitor bank and/or a dedicative LC resonant link, resulting in a low power density and a high cost. An alternative solution is using a dc link active power filter (APF) to direct the pulsating power into another energy-storage component. The main dc link filter capacitor can then be reduced substantially. Based on a mainstream dc APF topology, this paper proposed a new control strategy incorporating both dual-loop control and repetitive control. The circuit parameter design is also re-examined from a control point of view. The proposed APF scheme has better control performance, and is more suited for high power applications since it works in CCM and with a low switching frequency.

A Study of a Novel Wind Turbine Concept with Power Split Gearbox

  • This paper focuses on the design and control of a new concept for wind turbines with a planetary gearbox to realize a power split. This concept, where the generated wind power is split into two parts, is to increase the utilization of the wind power and may be particularly suitable for large scale off-shore wind turbines. In order to reduce the cost of the power electronic devices, a synchronous generator, which is driven by the planetary gear, is directly connected to the power grid without electronic converter. A servo drive, which functions as the control actuator, is connected to the power grid by a power electronic converter. With small scale power electronic device, the current harmonics can also be reduced. The speed of the main shaft is controlled to track the optimal tip speed ratio. Meanwhile the speed of the synchronous generator is controlled to stay at the synchronous speed. The minimum rated power of the servo motor and the converter, is studied and discussed in this paper. Different variants of the wind turbine with a planetary gear are also compared. The controller for optimal tip speed ratio and synchronous speed tracking is given.

  • The dependency of sputtering power on the electrical performances in amorphous HIZO-TFT (hafnium-indium-zinc-oxide thin film transistors) has been investigated. The HIZO channel layers were prepared by using radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering method with different sputtering power at room temperature. TOF-SIMS (time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) was performed to confirm doping of hafnium atom in IZO film. The field effect mobility (${\mu}FE$) increased and threshold voltage ($V_{th}$) shifted to negative direction with increasing sputtering power. This result can be attributed to the high energy particles knocking-out oxygen atoms. As a result, oxygen vacancies generated in HIZO channel layer with increasing sputtering power resulted in negative shift in Vth and increase in on-current.

  • Increasing of the use nonlinear power electronics equipments, power conditioning systems have been researched and developed for many years to compensate the harmonic disturbances and the reactive power. The main function of power conditioning systems is to reduce harmonic distortions, since extensive surveys quantify the problems associated with electric networks having non-linear loads. The main function of power conditioner compensates the current instead of the voltage. Therefore the inverter used in power conditioner is mostly current controlled type. In this paper, the proposed current control algorithm is analysed and discussed about how to design the controller which can apply power conditioning operation for grid-connective PV power system. And also proposed control system. To verify the proposed current control algorithm, a comprehensive evaluation with theoretical analysis, simulation, experiment results is presented.
