  • This paper provides a comprehensive study on the Sommerfeld phenomena in an asymmetric rotor with a nonideal power supply. An analytical approach is employed by deriving the equations of motion in a nondimensional form. The system parameters, including the asymmetry, external and internal damping, and motor power, are chosen to find their effects on the characteristics of the Sommerfeld phenomena and critical behavior around resonance. Results show that the rotor asymmetry suppresses the Sommerfeld phenomena and helps pass through resonance if the asymmetry is small. However, it is observed that the opposite effects exist in case of a large asymmetry. It is also found that the effects of external damping on the Sommerfeld phenomena are similar to those of the asymmetry, whereas internal damping has less effects than external damping and the asymmetry. By performing numerical simulations, four types of critical behavior are identified from the viewpoints of the stability and the passage through resonance.

  • We have studied the temporal variation in the North-South asymmetry of the sunspot area during the period from 1874 to 2007. Though the 9-year periodicity is commonly reported, shorter periodicities is still under study. We employ the cepstrum analysis method to analyze the noisy power spectrum of the North-South asymmetry. We demonstrate that the cleaned power spectrum shows reduction of the spurious back-ground noise level. Some of short period peaks in the power spectrum disappear after deconvolution. It should be, however, pointed out that power spectrum might look less noisy because of a filtering process during deconvolution. We conclude by pointing out that a more sophisticate filtering algorithm is required to produce a precise and reliable periodicity estimate.

  • This paper analyzes a asymmetry current with SFCL (Superconducting Fault Current Limiter) operation during transient period, when a fault occurs in power systems. The principle of asymmetry current nature is reviewed and asymmetry components reduction with SFCL operation is explained. To verify the performance of SFCL, a EMTP/ATPDraw model of SFCLs using MODELS language developed and simulated. Throughout the simulation, results presents the main factors for reducing the asymmetry component of fault current are not a quenching time, but a limiting resistance of SFCL and fault initiated angle.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of muscle asymmetry of knee joint among elite cyclists on anaerobic pedaling power related capacity. In another word, based on isokinetic strength of Non-Dominant, ND and Dominant, D, side, high, moderate and low ratio of ND to D were classified as High Symmetry Group, Moderate Symmetry Group and Asymmetry Group, respectively. Analysis of muscle asymmetry of extensor's ND and D side might not lead to any difference between the three groups. Based on muscle strength analysis of the flexor's ND and D, there was statistical difference between the groups in ND flexor and in the muscle balance index of the flexor muscle. This result also leads to significant difference in pedaling power functionality, but this effects might not lead to any negative pedaling power. Therefore, among even cyclists who may show almost the same recruitment pattern of ND and D side during pedaling stroke muscle asymmetry could exist but this phenomena might not negatively contribute to the pedaling capacity.

  • This paper presents a novel scheme for reducing an asymmetry current with SFCL (Superconducting Fault Current Limiter) operation during transient period, when a fault occurs in power systems. The main idea is installation an auxiliary SFCL with characteristics, which reduces the asymmetry fault current in first half cycle before the operating of main SFCL. For proper activities of SFCLs, the principle of asymmetry current nature is reviewed. A scheme of asymmetry components reduction with SFCL is then explained. The EMTP/ATPDraw model of SFCLs using MODELS language developed and simulated to verify the performance and effectiveness.

  • We have theoretically investigated the asymmetry effects on 10[Gb/s] optical duobinary transmitters from the viewpoint of the driving voltage ratios by computer simulations. For driving voltage ratios(=driving voltage/switching voltage) with smaller than 100[%], the transmission performance has been greatly affected by the asymmetry of the bandwidth of LPFs than that of the Mach-Zehnder Modulator driving voltage. On the other hand, for driving voltage ratios with 100[%], the transmission performance has been degraded by the asymmetry of the driving voltage and is not sensitive to that of the bandwidth of LPFs. For the transmission performance within 1[dB] power penalty under the asymmetry condition, the driving voltage ratio with 100[%] has performed better than the low driving voltage ratios.

  • In this paper, a novel analysis on the nonlinear response of a power amplifier (PA) with the intermodulation distortion (IMD) asymmetry is proposed based on the mutislice behavioral model. The coefficients of the odd-order and even-order polynomial of that model are represented with the PA practical circuit parameters such as intercept points, gain and amplitudes of excitation inputs. We also develop the analytic expressions to distinguish baseband frequency effect from second harmonic effect on the IMD asymmetry. We also validate the derived analytic expressions through measurements.

  • This paper intends to provide the whirling characteristics of an asymmetric rotor-shaft system with a non-ideal DC motor. The equations of motion have been derived in terms of system parameters such as the internal/external damping, the asymmetry and the motor voltage. By imposing the conditions that the motor input power should be balanced by the dissipated power, steadystate whirling characteristics are obtained such as the whirling amplitude, the whirling frequency and the stability diagrams. Results show that the whirling stability is affected by the internal/external damping and the asymmetry as well as the motor voltage. Also, the whirling amplitude at the steadystate is increased and the motor speed is lowered as the internal damping becomes higher or the external damping is reduced. In addition, the asymmetry causes the variation of the whirling orbit, which becomes splitted into two distinct trajectories. Finally, non-ideal characteristics of the DC motor is found to reduce the whirling motion in case of steadystate whirling with high asymmetry and high internal damping.
