Connecting a synchronous generator to a power system is a dynamic process, requiring the coordinated operation of many components and systems. The goal is to connect the oncoming generator to the system smoothly i.e without causing any significant bumps, surges, or power swings, by closing the ACB when the oncoming generator matches the power system in voltage magnitude, phase angle, and frequency. If oncoming generator voltage is not matched to the power system voltage, reactive power will flow either into or out of the system at the instant of ACB closure. If this voltage difference is too great, the reactive power flow may result in high transient stresses that could damage the windings of the generator. Also, if oncoming generator frequency is not matched to the power system frequency, transient power will flow between generator and power system. If the frequency difference is too great, the transient power flow is reflected into the prime mover shaft, and this may result in excessive shaft or coupling stress. This paper tries to prove the necessity of correct synchronization for ship generators through a transient phenomenon analysis.
This paper focuses on an improvement in the transient performance of Boost converters when the load changes abruptly. This is achieved on the basis of the nature trajectory in Boost converters. Three key aspects of the transient performance are analyzed including the storage energy change law in the inductors and capacitors of converters during the transient process, the ideal minimum voltage deviation in the transient process, and the minimum voltage deviation control trajectory. The changing relationship curve between the voltage deviation and the recovery time is depicted through analysis and simulations when the load suddenly increases. In addition, the relationship curve between the current fluctuation and the recovery time is obtained when the load suddenly decreases. Considering the aspects of an increasing and decreasing load, this paper proposes the transient performance synthetic optimized trajectory and control laws. Through simulation and experimental results, the transient performances are compared with the other typical three control methods, and the ability of proposed synthetic trajectory and control law to achieve optimal transient performance is verified.

The KEPS(KEPCO's Enhanced Power system Simulator) Real Time Digital Simulator(RTDS) is the largest real time power system simulator ever built. A power system which includes 320 (3-phase) buses and 90 generators has been modeled and run in real time. Since such large-scale systems were involved, it was not practical to validate them using non-real time electro-magnetic transient programs such as EMTDC™ or EMTP. Instead, the results of the real time electromagnetic transient simulation were validated by comparing to transient stability simulations run using PTI's PSS/E™ program. The comparison of results from the two programs is very good in almost all cases. However, as expected, some differences did exist and were investigated. The differences in the results were primarily traced to the fact that the electromagnetic transient solution algorithm provides more detail solutions and therefore greater accuracy than the transient stability algorithm. After finding very good comparison of results between RTDS Simulator and PSS/E, and after investigating the discrepancies found, KEPCO gained the necessary confidence to use the large-scale real time simulator to analyze and develop their power system.
When a contingency occurs in a large transmission route in a power system, it can generate various instabilities that may lead to a power system blackout. In particular, transient instability in a power system needs to be immediately addressed, and preventive measures should be in place prior to fault occurrence. Measures to achieve transient stability include system reinforcement, power generation restriction, and generator tripping. Because the interpretation of transient stability is a time domain simulation, it is difficult to determine the efficacy of proposed countermeasures using only simple simulation results. Therefore, several methods to quantify transient stability have been introduced. Among them, the single machine equivalent (SIME) method based on the equal area criterion (EAC) can quantify the degree of instability by calculating the residual acceleration energy of a generator. However, method for generator tripping effect evaluation does not have been established. In this study, we propose a method to evaluate the effect of generator tripping on transient stability that is based on the SIME method. For this purpose, the measures that reflect generator tripping in the SIME calculation are reviewed. Simulation results obtained by applying the proposed method to the IEEE 39-bus system and KEPCO system are then presented.
In PWR three-dimensional transient coupling calculation software CORCA-K, the nodal Green's function method and diagonal implicit Runge Kutta method are used to solve the spatiotemporal neutron dynamic diffusion equation, and the single-phase closed channel model and one-dimensional cylindrical heat conduction transient model are used to calculate the coolant temperature and fuel temperature. The LMW, NEACRP and PWR MOX/UO2 benchmarks and FangJiaShan (FJS) nuclear power plant (NPP) transient control rod move cases are used to verify the CORCA-K. The effects of burnup, fuel effective temperature and ejection rate on the control rod ejection process of PWR are analyzed. The conclusions are as follows: (1) core relative power and fuel Doppler temperature are in good agreement with the results of benchmark and ADPRES, and the deviation between with the reference results is within 3.0% in LMW and NEACRP benchmarks; 2) the variation trend of FJS NPP core transient parameters is consistent with the results of SMART and ADPRES. And the core relative power is in better agreement with the SMART when weighting coefficient is 0.7. Compared with SMART, the maximum deviation is -5.08% in the rod ejection condition and while -5.09% in the control rod complex movement condition.

This paper describes the emergency situation which occurs in Drilling Rig power system. Especially, we focused on power system transient characteristics on propulsion motor load and generator elimination situation in Drilling Rig operation. We performed numerical simulation and analyzed the result for power system transient stability characteristics on each condition for excitation system and governor control system using ETAP (Electrical Transient Analysis Program).
This paper shows the verification work of SARAX code system in the reactor core transient calculation based on the simplified EBR-II Benchmark. The SARAX code system is an analysis package developed by Xi'an Jiaotong University and aims at the advanced reactor R&D. In this work, a neutron-photon coupled power calculation model and a spatial-dependent reactivity feedback model were introduced. To verify the models used in SARAX, the EBR-II SHRT-45R test was simplified to an ULOF transient with an input flowrate change curve by fitting from reference. With the neutron-photon coupled power calculation model, SARAX gave close results in both power fraction and peak power prediction to the reference results. The location of the hottest assembly from SARAX and reference are the same and the relative power deviation of the hottest assembly is 2.6%. As for transient analysis, compared with experimental results and other calculated results, SARAX presents coincident results both in trend and absolute value. The minimum value of core net reactivity during the transient agreed well with the reported results, which ranged from -0.3$ to -0.35$. The results verify the models in SARAX, which are correct and able to simulate the in-core transient with reliable accuracy.
This paper proposes the control strategy of the shunt Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices to improve transient stability in multimachine power system. The multimachine power system has high nonlinear response after severe disturbance. The concept of Lyapunov energy function is applied to derive nonlinear control strategy and it was found that the time derivative of line voltage is not only can apply to control the shunt FACTS devices in multimachine system but also is locally measurable signal. The fuzzy logic control is also applied to overcome the uncertainty of various disturbances in multimachine power system. This paper presents the method of investigating the effect of the shunt FACTS devices on transient stability improvement. The proposed control strategy and the method of simulation are tested on the new England power system. It was found that the shunt FACTS devices based on the proposed nonlinear control strategy can improve transient stability of multimachine power system.

A simple dynamic model is developed for the transient simulation of the nuclear power reactor. The dynamic model includes the normalized neutron kinetics model with reactivity feedback effects and the core thermal-hydraulics model. The main objective of this paper demonstrates the capability of the developed dynamic model to simulate various important variables of interest for a nuclear power reactor transient. Some representative results of transient simulations show the expected trends in all cases, even though no available data for comparison. In this work transient simulations are performed on a microcomputer using the DESIRE/N96T continuous system simulation language which is applicable to nuclear power reactor transient analysis.
This paper proposes an algorithm for determining critical generator lists using accelerating power and synchronizing power coefficient (SPC), and critical generator group (CGG) from CGG candidates, which is a combination of critical generators. The accurate determination of CGG provides a more accurate energy margin while providing system operator with information of possible unstable generator group. Classical transient energy function (TEF) method selects the critical generators with big corrected kinetic energy of each generator at the moment of fault removal. However, the generator with small acceleration after fault, that is, the generator with small corrected kinetic energy, is also likely to belong to CGG if the generator has small synchronizing power. The proposed algorithm has been verified to be effective compared with the classical TEF method. We utilized the power system of Korean Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO) as a test system.
