  • Recently, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are used in many applications. When sensor nodes are deployed on special areas, where humans have any difficulties to get in, the nodes form network topology themselves. By using the sensor nodes, users are able to obtain environmental information. Due to the lack of the battery capability, sensor nodes should be efficiently managed with energy consumption in WSNs. In specific applications (e.g. in intrusion detections), intruders tend to occur unexpectedly. For the energy efficiency in the applications, an appropriate algorithm is strongly required. In this paper, we propose tree-based routing algorithm for the specific applications, which based on the intrusion detection. In addition, In order to decrease traffic density, the proposed algorithm provides enhanced method considering link cost and load balance, and it establishes efficient links amongst the sensor nodes. Simultaneously, by using the proposed scheme, parent and child nodes are (re-)defined. Furthermore, efficient routing table management facilitates to improve energy efficiency especially in the limited power source. In order to apply a realistic military environment, in this paper, we design three scenarios according to an intruder's moving direction; (1) the intruder is passing along a path where sensor nodes have been already deployed. (2) the intruders are crossing the path. (3) the intruders, who are moving as (1)'s scenario, are certainly deviating from the middle of the path. In conclusion, through the simulation results, we obtain the performance results in terms of latency and energy consumption, and analyze them. Finally, we validate our algorithm is highly able to adapt on such the application environments.

  • To compensate the nonlinearity of electroabsorption modulator(EAM) resulting from its near exponential transfer function, a semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA) that has a log transfer function is used. Since the transfer function of SOA is inverse to that of EAM, the intermodulation distortion(IMD) of EAM can be reduced by cascading SOA to EAM. Also, the RF gain can be increased by the optical gain of SOA. For these reasons, spurious free dynamic range(SFDR) of EAM is enhanced by connecting SOA to EAM in series and operating in gain salutation region. To improve the nonlinearity compensation of EAM, the increased gain of SOA is required and the slope of gain saturation, the ratio of gain to input SOA power, needs to be steep. However, signal spontaneous beat noise that is the dominant system noise increases in proportion to the gain such that the SFDR of EAM is reduced. The higher the gain of SOA is, the more ASE is increased. Thus the noise level of system is increased and the following SFDR of EAM is decreased. The slope of gain saturation region and ASE of have trade-off relation and the optimization is achieved at 8㏈ optical gain. 9㏈ enhancement of SFDR of EAM is obtained. This scheme is easy to embody the linear EAM and the integration with three components (DFB-LD, EAM and SOA) offers many merits, such as low insertion loss, low chirping and low polarization sensitivity.

  • In the nuclear power plant, early detection of fatigue crack by non-destructive test (NDT) equipment due to the thermal cyclic load is very important in terms of strict safety regulation. To this end, many efforts are exerted to the fabrication of artificial cracked specimen for practicing engineers in the NDT company. The crack of this kind, however, cannot be made by conventional machining, but should be made under thermal cyclic load that is close to the in-situ condition, which takes tremendous time due to the repetition. In this study, thermal loading condition is investigated to minimize the time for fabricating the cracked specimen using simulation technique which predicts the crack initiation and propagation behavior. Simulation and experiment are conducted under an initial assumed condition for validation purpose. A number of simulations are conducted next under a variety of heating and cooling conditions, from which the best solution to achieve minimum time for crack with wanted size is found. In the simulation, general purpose software ANSYS is used for the stress analysis, MATLAB is used to compute crack initiation life, and ZENCRACK, which is special purpose software for crack growth prediction, is used to compute crack propagation life. As a result of the study, the time for the crack to reach the size of 1mm is predicted from the 418 hours at the initial condition to the 319 hours at the optimum condition, which is about 24% reduction.

  • High strength flour (12.5% protein) and low strength flour (10.5% protein)were used to determine optimum formulation far steamed bread added with green tea powder (GTP). The response surface study consisted of the following independent variables : GTP (1.5∼4.5%), mixing time (8∼14 min), fermentation time (30∼50min). Bread Quality attributes measured for total bread score of each combination were loaf volume, spread ratio, surface glossiness, smoothness, grain and texture (firmness, cohesiveness, elasticity and adhesiveness). The required amount of GTP, mixing time and fermentation time for steamed bread made from two kinds of flour were different. GTP could be more added to lower strength flour than higher strength flour without losing bread quality. GTP highly affected the loaf volume, spread ratio, surface smoothness, firmness and total bread score of steamed bread (p<0.001). The results suggested that the functional steamed bread added with GTP having excellent quality can be made from low strength flour using green tea powder 3.2%, mixing time 11 min 8 sec and fermentation time 39 min 55 sec.

  • As shown by the popularity of the rapid train in the Seoul Metro Line No. 9, the demand for the rapidization of the metro transit has been continuously increased. However, it needs tremendous cost to construct new additional infrastructures to the existing line for the rapidization. In order to overcome the problem, utilizing the existing infrastructures such as crossing tracks as railroad sidetracks can be considered to be a good method of reducing the cost. In this case, there is a way exploiting the existing train as an express train and the advanced train, which increases both acceleration and deceleration, as a local train, but achievable acceleration and deceleration have not been analyzed rigorously. In this paper, we analyze feasible ranges and optimal values of both acceleration and deceleration of the advanced train analytically when we consider the rapidization of the metro transit utilizing the existing infrastructures and verify the results in Seoul Metro Line No. 3. Simulation results show ranges and optimal values of achievable acceleration and deceleration exist when minimum gap between an express train and a local train is smaller than 40 seconds.

  • Recent researches on radio frequency energy harvesting networks(RF-EHNs) with limited energy resource like battery have been focusing on the development of a new scheme that can effectively extend the whole lifetime of a network to semipermanent. In order for considerable increase both in the amount of energy obtained from radio frequency energy harvesting and its charging effectiveness, it is very important to design a network that supports energy harvesting and data transfer simultaneously with the full consideration of various characteristics affecting the performance of a RF-EHN. In this paper, we proposes an interference-based charging aware routing protocol(ICARP) that utilizes interference information and charging time to maximize the amount of energy harvesting and to minimize the end-to-end delay from a source to the given destination node. To accomplish the research objectives, this paper gives a design of ICARP adopting new network metrics such as interference information and charging time to minimize end-to-end delay in energy harvesting wireless networks. The proposed method enables a RF-EHN to reduce the number of packet losses and retransmissions significantly for better energy consumption. Finally, simulation results show that the network performance in the aspects of packet transmission rate and end-to-end delay has enhanced with the comparison of existing routing protocols.

  • The performance and stability of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) depend on the microstructure of the electrode and electrolyte. In anode, porosity and pore distribution affect the active site and fuel gas transfer. In an electrolyte, density and thickness determine the ohmic resistance. To optimizing these conditions, using costly method cannot be a suitable research plan for aiming at commercialization. To solve these drawbacks, we made high performance unit cells with low cost and highly efficient ceramic processes. We selected the NiO-YSZ cermet that is a commercial anode material and used facile methods like die pressing and dip coating process. The porosity of anode was controlled by the amount of carbon black (CB) pore former from 10 wt% to 20 wt% and final sintering temperature from $1350^{\circ}C$ to $1450^{\circ}C$. To achieve a dense thin film electrolyte, the thickness and microstructure of electrolyte were controlled by changing the YSZ loading (vol%) of the slurry from 1 vol% to 5 vol. From results, we achieved the 40% porosity that is well known as an optimum value in Ni-YSZ anode, by adding 15wt% of CB and sintering at $1350^{\circ}C$. YSZ electrolyte thickness was controllable from $2{\mu}m$ to $28{\mu}m$ and dense microstructure is formed at 3vol% of YSZ loading via dip coating process. Finally, a unit cell composed of Ni-YSZ anode with 40% porosity, YSZ electrolyte with a $22{\mu}m$ thickness and LSM-YSZ cathode had a maximum power density of $1.426Wcm^{-2}$ at $800^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper describes the performance improvement of Software (SW) digital filter using GPU (Graphical Processing Unit). The previous developed SW digital filter has a problem that it operates on a CPU (Central Processing Unit) basis and has a slow speed. The GPU was introduced to filter the data of the EAVN (East Asian VLBI Network) observation to improve the operation speed and to process data with other stations through filtering, respectively. In order to enhance the computational speed of the SW digital filter, NVIDIA Titan V GPU board with built-in Tensor Core is used. The processing speed of about 0.78 (1Gbps, 16MHz BW, 16-IF) and 1.1 (2Gbps, 32MHz BW, 16-IF) times for the observing time was achieved by filtering the 95 second observation data of 2 Gbps (512 MHz BW, 1-IF), respectively. In addition, 2Gbps data is digitally filtered for the 1 and 2Gbps simultaneously observed with KVN (Korean VLBI Network), and compared with the 1Gbps, we obtained similar values such as cross power spectrum, phase, and SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio). As a result, the effectiveness of developed SW digital filter using GPU in this research was confirmed for utilizing the data processing and analysis. In the future, it is expected that the observation data will be able to be filtered in real time when the distributed processing optimization of source code for using multiple GPU boards.

  • The overdrive hub clutch is attached to a 6-speed automatic transmission to reduce fuel consumption by using the additional power of the engine. This paper proposes a means to minimize the load and roll-over ratio on the punch during the piercing process for the overdrive hub clutch product. Die clearance, shear angle, and friction coefficient, which can affect the load and roll-over ratio of the punch during processing, were set as the design variables. Sensitivity analysis was also conducted to determine the influence of each design variable on the punch load and roll-over ratio. As a result, shear angle, friction coefficient and die clearance were found to be sensitive to load and roll-over ratio. The punch load and roll-over ratio were set as the objective function and the equation of each design variable and objective function was derives using the Response Surface Method. Finally, the optimal value of the design variables was derived using the Response Surface Method. Application of this model to finite element analysis resulted in 22.14% improvement in the roll-over ratio of the punch load and material.
