  • A passive energy recovery snubber for high-power-factor boost rectifier, in which the main switch is implemented with a MOSFET, is described in terms of the equivalent circuits that are operational during turn-on and turn-off sequences. The main switch combined with proposed snubber can be turned on with zero current and turned off at limited voltage stress. The high-power-factor boost rectifier with proposed snubber is implemented, and the experimental results are presented to confirm the validity of proposed snubber.

  • This paper investigates a fast, accurate and inexpensive hydraulic motor speed control system using high speed on-off solenoid valves. In order to retain the advantages of the two position valve and obtain better performance, the valves are operated by pulse width modulation(PWM) control. PWM signal is generated from a LabWIEW program in microcomputer in order to set up various duty ratio and frequency of carrier wave in PWM signal with varying system parameters. As the results of experiments, the speed control of a hydraulic motor was successfully implemented using on-off solenoid valves. In order to attenuate the pressure ripple and speed variation due to discontinuously controlled flow through the on-off valves, a resonator hose fabricated for automobile power steering system was connected between the valve and a hydraulic motor. From experimental results obtained in the hydraulic motor system with a resonator hose, it was ascertained that the resonator hose showed excellent performances in reducing pressure ripple and motor speed variation.

  • Recently a new high power device GCT (Gate Commutated Turn-off) thyristor has been successfully introduced to high power converting application areas. GCT thyristor has a quite different turn-off mechanism to the GTO thyristor. All main current during turn-off operation is commutated to the gate. Therefore, IGCT thyristor has many superior characteristics compared with GTO thyristor; especially, snubberless tum-off capacibility and higher turn-on capacibility. The basic structure of the GeT thyristor is same as that of the GTO thyristor. This makes the blocking voltage higher and controllable on-state current higher. The turn-off characteristic of the GCT thyristor is influenced by the minority carrier lifetime and the performance of the gate drive unit. In this paper, we present turn-off characteristics of the 2.5kV PT(Punch-Through) type GCT as a function of the minority carrier lifetime and variation of the doping profile shape of p-base region.

  • Power system perturbations are due to many reasons; one of the most common perturbation causes is switching off/on the power capacitors. This paper monitors and discusses the overvoltages which appear on local and remote capacitor connected buses in power systems. Using the Fast Fourier Transfer (FFT), the total harmonic content of voltages and currents waveforms is also estimated at all buses. The power factor during different cases of switching modes "off/on" is monitored. The monitoring technique tackles not only the longitudinal long distance mutual effects of switching power capacitors between different buses but also evaluates the overvoltage durations. A relative long term monitoring is implemented using the Matlab/Simulink environment to show severity assessments in different switching modes on the transformers' voltages and currents' waveforms.

  • A fixed off-time controlled high power factor ac-dc LED driver is proposed in this paper, which employs a novel zero-crossing-compensation (ZCC) circuit based on a fixed off-time controlled scheme. Due to the parasitic parameters of the system, the practical waveforms have a dead region. By detecting the zero-crossing boundary, the proposed ZCC circuit compensates the control signal VCOMP within the dead region, and is invalid above this region. With further optimization of the parameters KR and Kτ of the ZCC circuit, the dead zone can be eliminated and lower THD is achieved. Finally, the chip is implemented in HHNEC 0.5μm 5V/40V HVCMOS process, and a prototype circuit, delivering 7~12W of power to several 3-W LED loads, is tested under AC input voltage ranging from 85V to 265V. The test results indicate that the average total harmonic distortion (THD) of the entire system is approximately 10%, with a minimum of 5.5%, and that the power factor is above 0.955, with a maximum of 0.999.

  • Whenever the large-capacitor and high-voltage pump motor is opened and closed, the power factor improvement condenser and the low-voltage equipment are often damaged by the sparking and the on-off power serge. In order to find the reason and resolve the problem, we have installed a transition wave recorder for obtaining the transient on-off power serge wave and a power disturbance analyzer for long-time monitoring. In this way we measured and analysed the condition of the high-voltage pump motor whenever it is opened and closed.

  • High speed on-off electro-magnetic valves have been used for pressure control or flow control in automotive or construction machine servomechanisms. These systems require quicker valve switching speed to improve control preciseness. The authors designed and manufactured an electric valve driver with quick response characteristics by using 3 power source type valve driver concept. In experiments by using a hydraulic system incorporating the new valve driver, the new driver shortened the switching lag time from 5 ms to 1.3 ms. And also the new driver showed excellent position tracking control performances.

  • Distributed stray inductance exerts a significant influence on the turn-off voltages of power switching devices. Therefore, the design of low stray inductance bus bars has become an important part of the design of high-power converters. In this study, we first analyze the operational principle and switching transient of a T-type converter. Then, we obtain the commutation circuit, categorize the stray inductance of the circuit, and study the influence of the different types of stray inductance on the turn-off voltages of switching devices. According to the current distribution of the commutation circuit, as well as the conditions for realizing laminated bus bars, we laminate the bus bar of the converter by integrating the practical structure of a capacitor bank and a power module. As a result, the stray inductance of the bus bar is reduced, and the stray inductance in the commutation circuit of the converter is reduced to more than half. Finally, a 10 kVA experimental prototype of a T-type converter is built to verify the effectiveness of the designed laminated bus bar in restraining the turn-off voltage spike of the switching devices in the converter.

  • Exploiting the energy-delay tradeoff for energy saving is critical for developing green wireless communication systems. In this paper, we investigate the delay-constrained energy-efficient packet transmission. We aim to minimize the energy consumption of multiple randomly arrived packets in an additive white Gaussian noise channel subject to individual packet delay constraints, by taking into account the practical on-off circuit power consumption at the transmitter. First, we consider the offline case, by assuming that the full packet arrival information is known a priori at the transmitter, and formulate the energy minimization problem as a non-convex optimization problem. By exploiting the specific problem structure, we propose an efficient scheduling algorithm to obtain the globally optimal solution. It is shown that the optimal solution consists of two types of scheduling intervals, namely "selected-off" and "always-on" intervals, which correspond to bits-per-joule energy efficiency maximization and "lazy scheduling" rate allocation, respectively. Next, we consider the practical online case where only causal packet arrival information is available. Inspired by the optimal offline solution, we propose a new online scheme. It is shown by simulations that the proposed online scheme has a comparable performance with the optimal offline one and outperforms the design without considering on-off circuit power as well as the other heuristically designed online schemes.
