  • A new low-power, high-order optimization scheme to design surface gradient coils (SGC) is proposed for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although previous SGCs have been designed and constructed just to get strong linear gradients, this paper proposes more systematic ways of SGC design by minimizing electrical power consumption in the gradient coil and by removing unnecessary high-order field distortions in the imaging region. By assuming continuous current flow on the coil surface which may be or may not be planar, power consumption in the coil is minimized. According to the simulation results, the SGC designed by using the proposed scheme seems to produce much more uniform linear gradient field using less electrical power compared to the previously proposed SGCs.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the sensitivity of matching elements for the dual-band operation of a power amplifier with composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines. Metamaterial theory enables CRLH transmission to support arbitrary impedance matching at dual frequencies. In general, at sub-GHz range, the CRLH matching networks are commonly implemented with lumped elements, which are prone to manufacturing distribution. In order to reduce the effect from the distribution of element values in design, we suggest a method to analyze the sensitivity of matching elements from the performance aspect of power amplifiers. Based on the analysis, a 40dBm dual-band power amplifier operating at 0.7GHz and 1.5GHz is designed.

  • This paper describes operating and capacitor voltage balancing of the modular multilevel converter. The paper focuses on sizing of the cell capacitor and establishes approximate expressions for the capacitor voltage. Simulations and experiments results obtained from three-level modular converter are used to demonstrate its viability in medium voltage applications. It is shown that the modular converter can operate over the full modulation index linear range independent of load power factor.

  • Local dimming driving has advantages in reducing power consumption and improving contrast ratio(CR). In an LED backlight unit(BLU), many small LED blocks are implemented in 2-dimmensional space, and luminance of the blocks is controlled by a local dimming algorithm. However, such a BLU can induce various recognizable artifacts. A new novel algorithm is proposed for exact block luminance calculation to correct local dimming artifacts. Also we discuss modified low-gray-level dimming to achieve much aggressive power saving in a local dimming BLU system.

  • A novel zero-voltage and zero-current switching PWM DC-DC converter with lowered conduction losses is presented in this paper. A new double two-switch forward high frequency transformer type soft-switching converter topology is developed to minimize circulating currents occurs during freewheeling period. This converter has advantages as less number of the components, simple control principle under constant operation frequency, free of transformer Imbalance effect. The principle of operation is illustrated with steady-state analysis. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed converter topology is verified by implementation of a 500w-100kHz breadboard using IGBTs.

  • The developments of the hybrid energy are necessary since the future alternative energies that have no pollution and no limitation are restricted. Currently power generation system of MW scale has been developed. However, even photovoltaic system cannot always generate stable output with ever-changing weather condition. In this paper, sub power generator for hybrid system(photovoltaic 500[W], wind power generation 400[W]) was suggested. Sub power Generator that uses elastic energy of spiral spring to photovoltaic system was also added for the present system. In an experiment, when output of photovoltaic system gets lower than 24[V] (charging voltage), power was continuously supplied to load through the inverter by charging energy obtained from generating rotary energy of spiral spring operates In DC generator. Also, control algorithm of sub power generator is used genetic algorithm(GA).

  • The traditional power control theories for the harmonic reduction methods in multilevel inverters are found to be unreliable under unbalanced load conditions. The unreliability in harmonic mitigation is caused by voltage fluctuations, non-linear loads, the use of power switches, etc. In general, the harmonics are reduced by filters. However, such devices are an expensive way to provide a smooth and fast response to secure power systems during dynamic conditions. Hence, the Decoupled Double Synchronous Reference Frame (DDSRF) theory combined with a State Delay Controller (SDC) is proposed to achieve a harmonic reduction in power systems. The DDSRF produces a sinusoidal harmonic that is the opposite of the load harmonic. Then, it injects this harmonic into power systems, which reduces the effect of harmonics. The SDC is used to reduce the delay between the compensation time for power injection and the generation of a reference signal. The proposed technique has been simulated using MATLAB and its reliability has been verified experimentally under unbalanced conditions.

  • In order to drive gas discharge lamps, DC-AC converters with a LCC resonant tank, whose output voltage is adjusted by a variable frequency control are frequently used. However, when they are activated by varying the operating frequency, converters are frequently damaged by unstable operation, due to the rising and falling of the operating frequency near the resonant frequency. To solve this problem, a simple protection circuit for the power supply of a gas discharge lamp is proposed in this paper. This circuit senses the primary current of the main transformer. Using this protection circuit, the operating frequency of the lamp driving inverter system is kept close to and on the right side of the resonant frequency and the inverter is always operated in the ZVS condition. The resulting stable variable frequency operation allows various gas discharge lamps to be tested without the risk of damaging the main switches, because the protection circuit can protect the power MOSFETs of bridge converters from abnormal conditions. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed protection circuit are verified through the experimental results.
