Renewable energy resources such as wind and photovoltaic power generation systems demand a high step-up DC-DC converters to convert the low voltage to commercial grid voltage. However, the high step-up converter using a transformer has limitations of high voltage stresses of switches and diodes when the transformer winding ratio increases. Accordingly, conventional studies have been applied to series-connect multioutput converters such as forward-flyback and switched-capacitor flyback to reduce the transformer winding ratio. This paper proposes new single-ended converter topologies of an isolation type and a non-isolation type to improve power efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and output ripple. The first proposal is an isolation-type charge-pump switched-capacitor flyback converter that includes an extreme-ratio isolation switched-capacitor cell with a chargepump circuit. It reduces the transformer winding number and the output ripple, and further improves power efficiency without any cost increase. The next proposal is a non-isolation charge-pump switched-capacitor-flyback tapped-inductor boost converter, which adds a charge-pump-connected flyback circuit to the conventional switched-capacitor boost converter to improve the power efficiency and to reduce the efficiency degradation from the input variation. In this paper, the operation principle of the proposed scheme is presented with the experimental results of the 100 W DC-DC converter for verification.
A new mode of parallel operation of a modular 3-phase AC-DC Flyback converter for high power factor correction along with tight regulation is presented in this thesis. The converter offers input/output transformer isolation for safety, a unity input power factor for minimum reactive power, high efficiency and high power density for minimum weight and volume. Compared with previously developed 3-phase two-stage power converter, the advantage of the proposed converter does not require expensive high voltage and high current devices that are normally needed in popular boost type 3-phase converter. In this paper, a detailed small signal analysis of the modular 3-phase AC-DC flyback converter is provided for control purposes and also experimental results are included to confirm the validity of the analysis.
Generally, buck converter controller is designed to control the output voltage of the converter. However, design of the controller in a photovoltaic power conditioning system is different from theoretical design guideline. The controller in a photovoltaic power conditioning system controls the input voltage of the converter (the output voltage of the solar cell) to meet a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) performance. In this study, a new model for buck converter used in a photovoltaic power conditioning system is proposed, which is linearized after state-space averaging in each period. Also, mathematical expression of the modeled buck converter is interpreted separately as small and large signals; therefore its appropriateness is measured to design linear voltage and current controller.

A new LLC resonant converter with multiple outputs is proposed for high efficiency and low cost plasma display panel (PDP) power module. In the proposed converter, ZVS turn-on of the primary MOSFETs and ZCS nun-off of the secondary diodes are guaranteed in the overall input voltage and output load range. Moreover, the primary MOSFETs and the secondary diodes have low voltage stresses clamped to input and the output voltage, respectively. Therefore, the proposed converter shows the high efficiency due to the minimized switching and conduction losses. In addition, by employing the transformer, which has the two and more secondary side, the proposed converter can have multiple outputs and they show the great cross-regulation characteristics. As a result, the proposed converter can be implemented with low cost and compact size. The 500W prototype is implemented, which integrates the sustaining and addressing power supplies of PDP power module. The maximum efficiency is 96.8% and the respective output voltages are well regulated. Therefore, the proposed converter is suitable for high efficiency and low cost PDP power module.
This paper presents a zero voltage switching (ZVS) converter with three resonant tanks. The main advantages of the proposed converter are its ability to reduce the switching losses on the power semiconductors, decrease the current stress of the passive components at the primary side, and reduce the transformer secondary windings. Three resonant converters with the same power switches are adopted at the low voltage side to reduce the current rating on the transformer windings. Using a series-connection of the transformer secondary windings, the primary side currents of the three resonant circuits are balanced to share the load power. As a result, the size of both the transformer core and the bobbin are reduced. Based on the circuit characteristics of the resonant converter, the power switches are turned on at ZVS. The rectifier diodes can be turned off at zero current switching (ZCS) if the switching frequency is less than the series resonant frequency. Therefore, the reverse recovery losses on the rectifier diodes are overcome. Experiments with a 1.6kW prototype are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter.
A quasi-constant on-time controlled buck front end in combined discontinuous conduction mode and boundary conduction mode is proposed to improve power factor (PF).When instantaneous AC input voltage is lower than the output bus voltage per period, the buck converter turns into buck-boost converter with the addition of a level comparator to compare input voltage and output voltage. The gate drive voltage is provided by an additional oscillator during distortion time to eliminate the cross-over distortion of the input current. This high PF comes from the avoidance of the input current distortion, thereby enabling energy to be delivered constantly. This paper presents a series analysis of controlling techniques and efficiency, PF, and total harmonic distortion. A comparison in terms of efficiency and PF between the proposed converter and a previous work is performed. The specifications of the converter include the following: input AC voltage is from 90V to 264V, output DC voltage is 80V, and output power is 94W.This converter can achieve PF of 98.74% and efficiency of 97.21% in 220V AC input voltage process.
This paper proposes an adaptive sliding mode control (ASMC) strategy with an enhanced optimal reaching law (EORL) for the robust current tracking control of the boost converter based hybrid power source (HPS) in an electric vehicle (EV). A conventional ASMC strategy based on state observers and the hysteresis control method is used to realize the current tracking control for the boost converter based HPS. Then a novel enhanced exponential reaching law is proposed to improve the ASMC. Moreover, an enhanced exponential reaching law is optimized by particle swarm optimization. Finally, the adaptive control factor is redesigned based on the EORL. Simulations and experiments are established to validate the ASMC strategy with the EORL. Results show that the ASMC strategy with the EORL has an excellent current tracking control effect for the boost converter based HPS. When compared with the conventional ASMC strategy, the convergence time of the ASMC strategy with the EORL can be effectively improved. In EV applications, the ASMC strategy with the EORL can achieve robust current tracking control of the boost converter based HPS. It can guarantee the active and stable power distribution for boost converter based HPS.

This paper proposes a highly power-efficient single-inductor multiple-outputs (SIMO) DC-DC converter with a gate charge sharing method in which gate charges of output switches are shared to improve the power efficiency and to reduce the switching power loss. The proposed converter was fabricated by using a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process technology with high voltage devices of 5 V. The input voltage range of the converter is from 2.8 V to 4.2 V, which is based on a single cell lithium-ion battery, and the output voltages are 1.0 V, 1.2 V, 1.8 V, 2.5 V, and 3.3 V. Using the proposed gate charge sharing method, the maximum power efficiency is measured to be 87.2% at the total output current of 450 mA. The measured power efficiency improved by 2.1% compared with that of the SIMO DC-DC converter without the proposed gate charge sharing method.
Generation of electrical energy faces many problems today. Solar power converters were used to convert the electrical energy from the solar arrays to a stable and reliable power source. The object of this paper is to analyze and design DC-DC converters in a solar energy system to investigate the performance of the converters. A DC-DC converter can be commonly used to control the power flow from solar cell to load and to achieve maximum power point tracking(MPPT), DC-AC converter can also be used to modulate the DC power to AC power being applied on common utility load. A DC-DC converter is used to boost the solar cell voltage to constant 360(V) DC link and to ensure operation at the maximum power point tracking, If a wide input voltage range has to be covered a boost converter is required. In this paper, author described that simulation and experimental results of PV system contain solar modules, a DC-DC converter(boost type chopper), a DC-AC converter (3-phase inverter) and resistive loads.
A family of non-isolated DC-DC three-port converters (TPCs) that allows for a more flexible power flow among a renewable energy source, an energy storage device and a current-reversible DC bus is introduced. Most of the reported non-isolated topologies in this area consider only a power consuming load. However, for applications such as hybrid-electric vehicle braking systems and DC microgrids, the load power generating capability should also be considered. The proposed three-port family consists of one unidirectional port and two bi-directional ports. Hence, they are well-suited for photovoltaic (PV)-battery-DC bus systems from the power flow viewpoint. Three-port converters are derived by combining different commonly known power converters in an integrated manner while considering the voltage polarity, voltage levels among the ports and the overall voltage conversion ratio. The derived converter topologies are able to allow for seven different modes of operation among the sources and load. A three-port converter which integrates a boost converter with a buck converter is used as a design example. Extensions of these topologies by combining the soft-switching technique with the proposed design example are also presented. Experiment results are given to verify the proposed three-port converter family and its analysis.
