This paper proposes a high efficiency three-phase cascaded phase shifted H-bridge multi-level inverter without DC/DC converters for grid-tied multi string photovoltaic (PV) applications. The cascaded H-bridge topology is suitable for PV applications since each PV module can act as a separate DC source for each cascaded H-bridge module. The proposed phase shifted H-bridge multi-level topology offers advantages such as operation at a lower switching frequency and a lower current ripple when compared to conventional two level topologies. It is also shown that low ripple sinusoidal current waveforms are generated with a unity power factor. The control algorithm permits the independent control of each DC link voltage with a maximum power point for each string of PV modules. The use of the controller area network (CAN) communication protocol for H-bridge multi-level inverters, along with localized PWM generation and PV voltage regulation are implemented. It is also shown that the expansion and modularization capabilities of the H-bridge modules are improved since the individual inverter modules operate more independently. The proposed topology is implemented for a three phase 240kW multi-level PV power conditioning system (PCS) which has 40kW H-bridge modules. The experimental results show that the proposed topology has good performance.
In this study, we propose a fault analysis method for a power distribution grid with PCS-based DERs. We first explain the characteristics of a PCS-based DER. According to the characteristics, the DER is considered as a current-controlled voltage source, which produces varying voltages within a certain limit so that currents equal to given references flowing from the DER to the grid (currents controlled). So, we introduce the symmetrical equivalent models in the form of varying voltage source for fault analysis and then, construct a convex optimization problem to solve the fault problem associated with the equivalent models and grid conditions. Thus, the proposed method enables to perform a proper fault analysis considering the characteristics of the DER, which are currents controlled, voltage limited, and unity power factor achievement. To verify the validity of the proposed method, we perform computer simulations with the proposed method and with MATLAB Simulink, and the results are compared.

PCS needs to freely switch AC and DC to connect the battery, external AC loads and renewable energy in both directions for energy efficiency. Whenever converting happens, power loss inevitably occurs. Minimization of the power loss to save electricity and convert it for usage is a very critical function in PCS. PCS plays an important role in the ESS(Energy Storage System) but the importance of stabilizing semiconductors on PCB(Printed Circuit Board) should be empathized with a risk of failure such as a fire explosion. In this study, the temperature variation inside PCS was reviewed by cooling fan on top of PCS, and the vibration characteristics of PCS were analyzed during truck transportation for reliability of the product. In most cases, a cooling fan is mounted to control the inner temperature at the upper part of the PCS and components generating the heat placed on the internal aluminum cooling plate to apply the primary cooling and the secondary cooling system with inlet fans for the external air. Results of CFD showed slightly lack of circulating capacity but simulated temperatures were durable for components. The resonance points of PCS were various due to the complexity of components. Although they were less than 40 Hz which mostly occurs breakage, it was analyzed that the vibration displacement in the resonance frequency band was very insufficient. As a result of random-vibration simulation, the lower part was analyzed as the stress-concentrated point but no breakage was shown. The steel sheet could be stable for now, but for long-term domestic transportation, structural coupling may occur due to accumulation of fatigue strength. After the test completed, output voltage of the product had lost so that extra packaging such as bubble wrap should be considered.

This paper proposes a control strategy based on the frequency detection method, comprising a current control and a feed-forward voltage control loop, is proposed for grid-interactive power conditioning systems (PCS). For continuous provision of power to critical loads, PCS should be able to check grid outages instantaneously. Hence, proposed in the present paper are a frequency detection method for detecting abnormal grid conditions and a controller, which consists of a current controller and a feedforward voltage controller, for different operation modes. The frequency detection method can detect abnormal grid conditions accurately and quickly. The controller which has current and voltage control loops rapidly helps in load voltage regulation when grid fault occurs by changing reference and control modes. The proposed seamless transfer control strategy is confirmed by experimental results.
In this paper, the design process and the control method of the power conversion system (PCS) that consists of a bidirectional DC-DC converter and a 3-level T-type inverter for an energy storage system is presented. Especially the design method of the output LCL filter for a 3-lvel T-type inverter without complex mathematical process are proposed. The validity of the control method and design process in this paper are verified through simulation and experimental analysis.

PV Power Conditioning System (PCS) must have high conversion and low cost. Generally, PV PCS uses either a single converter or multilevel module integrated converter (MIC). Each of these approaches has both advantage and disadvantage. For a high conversion efficiency and low cost of PV module, this paper proposes series connection of module integrated DC-DC converter's output with PV panel. Output voltage of PV panel is connected to the output capacitor of flyback converter. Thus, converter's output voltage is added to the output voltage of PV panel. Isolated DC-DC converter generates only the difference voltage between the PV panel voltage and the required total output voltage. This method reduces power level of DC-DC converter and enhances the energy conversion efficiency compared with conventional DC-DC converter.
This paper deals with the design and testing of a simulator system for microgrids with distributed generations. This system is composed of a Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) and a power amplifier. The RTDS parts are operated for real time simulation for the microgrid model and the distributed generation source model. The power amplifiers are operated fur amplification of the RTDS's simulated output signal, which is a node voltage of the microgrid and distributed generation source. In this paper, we represent an RTDS system design, specification and test results of a power amplifier and simulation results of a PV (Photovoltaic) system and wind turbine system. The proposed system is applicable for development and performance testing of a PCS (Power Conversion System) for renewable energy sources.

Recently, the development of several hundreds of kW scale PCS for fuel cell generation is required as commercialization process of distributed generation systems using high temperature fuel cells such as MCFC begins. This paper proposes and optimized topology suitable for MCFC fuel cell generation system and LCL filter design method considering voltage quality of local loads such as MBOP. An interleaving technique is applied to step-up DC-DC converter, optimized number of phases is determined considering efficiency and volume. Also, a LCL filter design method is proposed considering quality of current injected to the grid as well as that of voltage across the local load. The proposed PCS system is validated through reduced 1kW prototype.

This paper suggests a structure of power control system in floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system. We have developed an unified SCADA(Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system which can be used to monitor and control PCS(Power Conversion System) based on IEC61850. The SCADA system is essential to perform the algorithm like proportional distribution and data acquisition, monitoring, active power, reactive power control in hybrid power generation system. IEC61850 is an international standard for electrical substation automation systems. It was made to compensate the limitations of the legacy industrial protocols such as Modbus. In order to test the proposed SCADA system and algorithm, we have developed the wind-wave simulator based Modbus. We have designed a protocol conversion device based on real-time Linux for the communication between Modbus and IEC61850. In this study, SCADA system consists of four 3MW class wind turbines and twenty-four 100kW class wave force generator.
