  • Typical power electronic converters employ only pulse width modulation (PWM) to generate specific switching patterns. In this paper, a novel control strategy combining both pulse-width and amplitude modulation strategies (PWAM) has been proposed for power converters. The Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM), used in communication systems, has been applied to power electronic converters. This increases the degrees of freedom in eliminating or mitigating harmonics when compared to the conventional PWM strategies. The role of PAM in the novel PWAM strategy is based on the control of the converter's dc sources values. Software implementation of the conventional PWM and the PWAM control strategies has been applied to a five-level inverter for mitigating selective harmonics. Results show the superiority of the proposed strategy from the THD point of view along with a reduction in the inverter power dissipation.

  • To improve the bandwidth efficiency of conventional orthogonal modulation, the MCTO(Multi-Code Trans-Orthogonal) modulation, which is modified orthogonal modulation, was proposed. However, the RF(Radio Frequency) power amplifier for the MCTO modulation is too complex to reject the amplitude distortion due to the non-constant amplitude property of the MCTO. Therefore, in this paper, CAMCTO(constant-amplitude multi-code trans-orthogonal) modulation is proposed by using the constant-amplitude encoding algorithm for multi-code signal. Additionally, the performance of the proposed CAMCTO modulation is compared with those of the orthogonal modulation and the MCTO modulation by using the computer simulation. The computer simulations show that the bandwidth efficiency of the proposed CAMCTO modulation is better than that of the conventional orthogonal modulation.

  • Analysis of accommodation amplitude has been conducted for 137 adults, living in rural area, aged from their fifties to eighties. The methods included measurement of correction power for distance via auto-refractometer, measurement of near power based on trial frame and trial lens set, and calculation of effective accommodation amplitude using 1/2 and 2/3 of the maximum accommodation amplitude. The research results for participants aged in their fifties, sixties, seventies, and eighties showed 1.84~2.46D, 1.55~2.06D, 1.43~1.90D, and 1.22~1.62D respectively. It is relatively higher than the existing knowledge regarding accommodation amplitude associated with age.

  • A new discrete-amplitude pulse width modulation (DAPWM) scheme for a high-efficiency linear power amplifier is proposed. A radio frequency (RF) input signal is divided into an envelope and a phase modulated carrier. The low-frequency envelope is modulated so that it can be represented by a pulse whose area is proportional to its amplitude. The modulated pulse has at least two different pulse amplitude levels in order that the duty ratios of the pulse are kept large for small input. Then, an RF pulse train is generated by mixing the modulated envelope with the phase modulated carrier. The RF pulse train is amplified by a switching-mode power amplifier, and the original RF input signal is restored by a band pass filter. Because duty ratios of the RF pulse train are kept large in spite of a small input envelope, the DAPWM technique can reduce loss from harmonic components. Furthermore, it reduces filtering efforts required to suppress harmonic components. Simulations show that the overall efficiency of the pulsed power amplifier with DAPWM is about 60.3% for a mobile WiMax signal. This is approximately a 73% increase compared to a pulsed power amplifier with PWM.

  • In this paper, the power burden of High-TC superconducting (HTSC) module comprising the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with two triggering currents during the fault period was analyzed. The short-circuit tests for the simulated power system with the SFCL in the different fault positions, which were expected to affect the amplitude of the fault current, were carried out. Through the comparative analysis on the power burden of the HTSC modules, the proposed flux-lock type SFCL was confirmed to be effective to divide into two power burdens according to the amplitude of the fault currents.

  • The instantaneous amplitude (IA) based on the higher order differential energy operator is proposed. And its general form for arbitrary order is also proposed. The various definitions of the IA and the instantaneous frequency (IF) estimators are considered. The IA and IF estimators based on the energy operators need less computational cost than the conventional IF and IA estimators exploiting the Hilbert transform. The IF and IA estimators are compared in terms of the frequency and amplitude tracking accuracy of the AM-FM signals. For noiseless case, the IA and IF estimators based on the Teager-Kaiser energy operator show better tracking performance than the IF and IA estimators based on the higher energy operators. However, under noisy condition, the IF and IA estimator based on the higher order energy operators with the order 3 and 4 show better tracking than the Teager-Kaiser energy based estimators. The IF and IA estimators are applied to signals in the various power anomalies to show their usefulness as the disturbance detectors.

  • Unlike existing pulse-width modulation (PWM) techniques, such as sinusoidal PWM and random PWM, the wavelet PWM (WPWM) technique based on a Harr wavelet function can achieve a high fundamental component for the output voltage, low total harmonic distortion, and simple digital implementation. However, the original WPWM method lacks output voltage control. Thus, the practical application of the WPWM technique is limited. This study proposes an improved WPWM technique that can regulate output voltage amplitude with the addition of a parameter. The relationship between the additional parameter and the output voltage amplitude is analyzed in detail. Experimental results verify that the improved WPWM exhibits output voltage control in addition to all the merits of the WPWM technique.

  • This paper presents a compensation algorithm for position error due to an amplitude imbalance between resolver output signals. Resolvers are typically used to obtain absolute position information for motor drive systems in severe environments. Position error is caused by an amplitude imbalance of the resolver output signals. As a result, the d- and q-axis currents of synchronous reference frame have periodic ripples in the stator fundamental frequency in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive systems. Therefore, this paper proposes a compensation algorithm to reduce the position error generated by the amplitude imbalance. The proposed method does not require any additional hardware, and reduces computation time with a simple integral operation according to rotor position. In addition, the position error can be directly compensated for by the estimated position error. The effectiveness of the proposed compensation algorithm is verified through several simulations and experiments.

  • In this paper, the new smart dimming algorithm which is mixed with PWM and PAM control method is proposed for reducing the power consumption of LED TV Backlight. The proposed technique is using the curve characteristics of LED forward voltage and current which is proportionally changing LED forward voltage as changing LED forward current. Therefore, each PWM and PAM control method has different LED forward voltage and current in the same brightness condition. The PWM control method adjusts the brightness of LED TV Backlight by only varying the duty ratio of PWM and constantly sustaining the amplitude of LED forward current and voltage. So, the level of LED forward current and voltage in the PWM control method is relatively high and constant regardless of duty ratio of PWM. On the other hand, the PAM control method adjusts the brightness of LED TV Backlight by directly varying the level of LED forward current. So, the level of LED forward current and voltage in the PAM control method is lowered according to the brightness level. For the above-mentioned reason, the PAM control method has the advantage of reducing the total power consumption of LED TV Backlight at the brightness condition of below 100%, compared with PWM control method. By implementing this characteristic to LED driver circuit with control algorithm in MCU, the power consumption of LED TV Backlight can expect to be reduced. The effectiveness of the proposed method, new smart dimming algorithm, CPWAM(=Conditional Pulse Width Amplitude Modulation), has been verified by experimental results.
