  • It is a challenge from an industrial point of view to fabricate silicon nitride substrates with high thermal conductivity and good mechanical properties for power devices from high-purity Si scrap powder by means of thick film processes such as tape casting. We characterize the residual carbon and oxygen content after the binder burnout followed by nitridation as a function of the temperature in the temperature range of $300^{\circ}C-700^{\circ}C$ and the atmosphere in a green tape sample which consists of high-purity Si powder and polymer binders such as polyvinyl butyral and dioctyl phthalate. The optimum condition of binder burnout is suggested in terms of the binder removal temperature and atmosphere. If considering nitridation, the burnout of the organic binder in air compared to that in a nitrogen atmosphere could offer an advantage when fabricating reaction-bonded $Si_3N_4$ substrates for power devices to enable low carbon and oxygen contents in green tape samples.

  • $TiO_2$ possesses great photocatalytic properties but absorbs only UV light owing to high band gap energy (Eg = 3.2 eV). By narrowing the band gap through doping a metal ion, the photocatalytic activity can be enhanced in condition of the light of a higher than 365 nm wavelength. Main purpose for this study is to evaluate the activities of metal doped $TiO_2$ for degrading the volatile organic compounds (VOCs); p-xylene is chosen in the VOC removal test. Vanadium is selected in this study because an ionic radius of vanadium is almost the same as titanium ion and vanadium can be easily doped into $TiO_2$. V-doped $TiO_2$ was synthesized by sol-gel methods and compared with pure $TiO_2$. Pure TiO2 powder and V-doped $TiO_2$ powder were coated on glasses by spray coating method. UV-Visible spectrophotometer was used for the measurement of the band gap changes. VOC concentration degradation level was tested with using various UV light sources in an enclosed chamber. Catalytic activities of prepared samples were evaluated based on the experimental results and compared with coated pure $TiO_2$ sample.

  • Transition-metal oxide semiconductors have various band gaps. Therefore, many studies have been conducted in various application fields. Among these, methods for the adsorption of organic dyes and utilization of photocatalytic properties have been developed using various metal oxides. In this study, the adsorption and photocatalytic effects of $WO_3$ nanomaterials prepared by hydrothermal synthesis are investigated, with citric acid added in the hydrothermal process as a structure-directing agent. The nanostructures of $WO_3$ are studied using transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy images. The crystal structure is investigated using X-ray diffraction patterns, and the changes in the dye concentrations adsorbed on $WO_3$ nanorods are measured with a UV-visible absorption spectrophotometer based on Beer-Lambert's law. The methylene blue (MB) dye solution is subjected to acid or base conditions to monitor the change in the maximum adsorption amount in relation to the pH. The maximum adsorption capacity is observed at pH 3. In addition to the dye adsorption, UV irradiation is carried out to investigate the decomposition of the MB dye as a result of photocatalytic effects. Significant photocatalytic properties are observed and compared with the adsorption effects for dye removal.

  • In this study, effects of oxide additives on mechanical properties and microstructure of A1N and A1N polytype ceramics were investigated. Fine A1N powder was synthesized by nitriding alumiuim hydroxide prepared from Al-isopropoxide, at 1350$^{\circ}C$ for 10h in N2 atmosphere. By adding 3w/o Y2O3, 0.56w/o CaO, and 10w/o SiO2 to AlN powder, AlN and AlN polytype ceramics were prepared by hot-pressing under the pressure of 30 MPa at 1800$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. AlN ceramics with no additives formed considerable amount of AlON phase, while AlN ceramics doped with Y2O3 or CaO decreased AlON phase and formed Y-Al or Ca-Al oxide compound. AlN+10w/o SiO2(+3w/o Y2O3) composition produced AlON and AlN polytype compound having 21R as a major phase. Room temperature flexural strength of AlN ceramics with no additive was 246MPa, and room temperature flexural strength and critical temperature difference by thermal shock(ΔTc) of AlN ceramics dooped with Y2O3 or CaO were 532MPa/340$^{\circ}C$ and 423MPa/300$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Y2O3 and CaO used as sintering agent played roles of densification and oxygen removal of AlN ceramics, and affected grain growth/grain morphologies of AlN ceramics.

  • Recently, inverter control systems have attracted immense attention to increase the energy efficiency. However, such systems use repeated on/off high currents for linear operation control, instead of the prevalent step variable current control method. Hence, there arise concerns of personal and property damage, especially due to the durability, explosive characteristics, and operating speed of the fuse, which is responsible for safety and is one of the internal components using current control. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an IEC60127-4 SMD sub-miniature fuse, consisting of Ag-Cu alloys and ceramic powder for arc soothing. The IEC60127-4 SMD sub-miniature fuse has high durability and cut-off capacity, and operates safely in dangerous circumstances caused by the inverter control system.

  • Heavy metal pollution is caused due to anthropogenic activities and is considered as a serious environmental problem which endangers human health and environment. The present study deals with biosorption, an eco-friendly technique for the removal of heavy metal Zn(II) from aqueous medium. Various natural materials have been explored for the uptake of metal ions, where most of them are physically or chemically enhanced. Dry cowdung powder (DCP) has been utilized as a low-cost, environmentally friendly humiresin without any pre-treatment, thus demonstrating the concept of Green Chemistry. Batch biosorption studies using 65Zn(II) tracer were performed and the impact of different experimental parameters was studied. Results revealed that at pH 6, 94 ± 2% of Zn(II) was effectively biosorbed in 5 min, at 303 K. The process was spontaneous and exothermic, following pseudo-second-order reaction. The mechanism of heavy metal biosorption employing green adsorbent was therefore elucidated in order to determine the optimal method for removing Zn(II) ions. DCP has a lot of potential in the wastewater treatment industry, as seen by its ability to meet 3A's affordability, adaptability, and acceptability criteria. As a result, DCP emerges as one of the most promising challengers for green chemistry and the zero-waste idea.

  • Chemical wastes containing small amounts of uranium can not be disposed of them after treatment as an industrial waste, because the uranium concentration in the final dry cake exceeds the exemption level. Especially for the removal of uranium in this study, the method for immobilizing Diphosil powder within alginate beads is adopted to make a bead form from a powdered resin. Sodium alginate bead itself showed a capability to uptake uranium to above 60%, but the value was decreased to below 30% after equilibrium. The adsorption rate of uranium increased with the increasing content of Diphosil in the sodium alginate bead. Diphosil resin itself showed very fast uptake of uranium from early stages, and then the rates were leveled off. Diphosil bead showed an improved capability to uptake uranium considering the pure Diphosil content in the composite bead, and provide a considerable potential for further applications of a continuous process by using Diphosil as a bead form.

  • Pt/C powder which was used as electrocatalyst in a Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell(PAFC) was fabricated by colloid method. It was reported that the sulfur from reductant, $Na_2S_2O_4$, worked as a poison against catalyst during long term operation. To remove these sulfurs, we try to treat Pt/C powder by three different methods. First, we tried to remove the sulfur according to temperature and time in $H_2$ atmosphere. As the heat treatment temperature is raised up, the effect of the removal is increased but the electrode performance is decreased because of the growth of Pt particle size. The optimal heat treatment temperature is $400^{\circ}C$, the size of Pt particle is approximately $35{\sim}40{\AA}$ and the electrode performance is $360mA/cm^2$ at 0.7 V. At $400^{\circ}C$, even though the time of heat treatment is extended, size of Pt, amounts of remaining sulfur and electrode performance is almost constant. Secondly, when we removed in a crucible at $900^{\circ}C$ the removal of the sulfur was not better, but the size of Pt particle, approximately $80{\AA}$, was smaller than that of heat treatment in $H_2$ atmosphere at $900^{\circ}C$. Lastly we treated with solvents such as acetone, benzene, and carbon disulfide. It was observed that sulfur components were removed partly by extraction with solvents, the electrode performances were similar each other.

  • This research was performed to evaluate adsorption behavior of woody charcoals obtained from wood powder, fiber and bark of spruce (Abies sibirica Ledeb). The wood materials were carbonized at various temperatures for 1 hour using experimental rotary kiln without any inert gas. The adsorption capacity of iodine and toluene, specific surface area and removal efficiency of acetic acid and ammonia gas of those charcoals were measured. The higher was the temperature for carbonization, the lower yields of charcoals were. Ash content of bark charcoal was higher than that of wood powder charcoal or fiber charcoal. Elemental analysis of woody charcoal revealed that the content of carbon was gradually lincreased as carbonization temperature was higher. When carbonization temperature was higher, adsorption capacity of woody charcoals for iodine was much improved. Wood powder charcoal and fiber charcoal were more effective for iodine adsorption rather than bark charcoal. Capacity of toluene adsorption was the highest in the charcoal of $600^{\circ}C$. Charcoals produced at high temperature efficiently removed acetic acid gas, while charcoals carbonized at low temperature such as $400^{\circ}C$ were proper to remove ammonia gas. This difference may be explained that the acidity of charcoals depends on the carbonization temperature: charcoals of low temperature indicate acidic property, while those of high temperature turned to alkaline.
