Influence of Water Volume on Particle Characteristics of Iron Powder with Insulated Coating for a Compacted Magnetic Core

  • Seasonal changes have been recognized in particle characteristics and forming characteristics of iron powder with insulated coating for a compacted magnetic core because of its high hygroscopicity, due to its phosphate coating and resin binder additives. For this reason, particle characteristics and molding characteristics of the powder with diverse water absorbtivity have been studied. The result shows that the higher the volume of absorbed water, the worse the fluidity becomes, resulting in the reduction in both springback during the molding process and expansion reduction after the heat treatment. The requirement on dimension accuracy for the finished product can be satisfied with an additional drying process on the material powder, which contributes to maintain its water volume constant.

Sintering of Nd-Fe-B Magnets from Dy Coated Powder

  • High-coercive (Nd,Dy)-Fe-B magnets were fabricated via dysprosium coating on Nd-Fe-B powder. The sputtering coating process of Nd-Fe-B powder yielded samples with densities greater than 98%. $(Nd,Dy)_2Fe_{14}B$ phases may have effectively penetrated into the boundaries between neighboring $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains during the sputtering coating process, thereby forming a $(Nd,Dy)_2Fe_{14}B$ phase at the grain boundary. The maximum thickness of the Dy shell was approximately 70 nm. The maximum coercivity of the Dy sputter coated samples(sintered samples) increased from 1162.42 to 2020.70 kA/m. The microstructures of the $(Nd,Dy)_2Fe_{14}B$ phases were effectively controlled, resulting in improved magnetic properties. The increase in coercivity of the Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet is discussed from a microstructural point of view.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube(CNT) reinforced hydroxyapatite composite coating with a thickness of $5{\mu}m$ has been successfully deposited on Ti substrate using aerosol deposition(AD). The coating had a dense microstructure with no cracks or pores, showing good adhesion with the Ti substrate. Microstructural observation using field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) showed that CNTs with original tubular morphology were found in the hydroxyapatite-CNT(HA-CNT) composite coating. Measurements of hardness and elastic modulus for the coating were performed by nanoindentation tests, indicating that the mechanical properties of the coating were remarkably improved by the addition of CNT to HA coating. Therefore, HA-CNT composite coating produced by AD is expected to be potentially applied to the coating for high load bearing implants.

Fabrication and Pore Characteristics of Cu Foam by Slurry Coating Process

  • Metallic porous materials have many interesting combinations of physical and geometrical properties with very low specific weight or high gas permeability. In this study, highly porous Cu foam is successfully fabricated by a slurry coating process. The Cu foam is fabricated specifically by changing the coating amount and the type of polyurethane foam used as a template. The processing parameters and pore characteristics are observed to identify the key parameters of the slurry coating process and the optimized morphological properties of the Cu foam. The pore characteristics of Cu foam are investigated by scanning electron micrographs and micro-CT analyzer, and air permeability of the Cu foam is measured by capillary flow porometer. We confirmed that the characteristics of Cu foam can be easily controlled in the slurry coating process by changing the microstructure, porosity, pore size, strut thickness, and the cell size. It can be considered that the fabricated Cu foams show tremendous promise for industrial application.

용사피막의 마찰.마모 특성 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Evaluation of the Friction and Wear Properties of the Sprayed Coating Layer)

  • In this study, friction and wear properties of flame sprayed specimens and hard Cr plating specimens were tested, and their properties were compared each other in dry and lubrication condition. Ni-Cr powder and steel powder were used as the spray powder and sprayed on the steel(S45C) substrate by flame sprayed method. Each wear surface was observed with SEM after friction and wear test. The friction coefficient of the as-forged steel specimens was the highest among surface treatment specimens, and the other specimens appeared in order as follows ; hard Cr-plating specimens, Ni-Cr powder sprayed specimens, steel powder sprayed specimens. Comparing the wear volumes in dry condition, as forged steel specimens appeared the greatest wear volume, and the other specimens appeared wear volume in order as follows ; Ni-Cr powder sprayed specimens, steel powder sprayed specimens, hard Cr plating specimens. In friction and wear test, the hard Cr plating specimens were worn by the abrasive phenomenon, involving the cracks. The wear volume of steel powder sprayed specimens was lower than that of Ni-Cr powder sprayed specimens. Comparing the tensile strength of both sprayed coating layers, the steel powder sprayed coating layer was better than Ni-Cr powder sprayed coating layer.

Warm Spray 공정과 Cu-Ga 및 Cu-In 혼합 분말을 이용한 CGI계 복합 코팅층의 제조 및 특성 (Manufacturing and Properties of CGI-based Composite Coating Layer Utilizing a Warm Spray Process and Cu-Ga and Cu-In Mixed Powders)

  • This study manufactured a CIG-based composite coating layer utilizing a new warm spray process, and a mixed powder of Cu-20at.%Ga and Cu-20at.%In. In order to obtain the mixed powder with desired composition, the Cu-20at.%Ga and Cu-20at.%In powders were mixed with a 7:1 ratio. The mixed powder had an average particle size of $35.4{\mu}m$. Through the utilization of a warm spray process, a CIG-based composite coating layer of $180{\mu}m$ thickness could be manufactured on a pure Al matrix. To analyze the microstructure and phase, the warm sprayed coating layer underwent XRD, SEM/EDS and EMPA analyses. In addition, to improve the physical properties of the coating layer, an annealing heat treatment was conducted at temperatures of $200^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour each. The microstructure analysis identified ${\alpha}$-Cu, $Cu_4In$ and $Cu_3Ga$ phases in the early mixed powder, while $Cu_4In$ disappeared, and additional $Cu_9In_4$ and $Cu_9Ga_4$ phases were identified in the warm sprayed coating layer. Porosity after annealing heat treatment reduced from 0.75% (warm sprayed coating layer) to 0.6% (after $600^{\circ}C/1hr$. heat treatment), and hardness reduced from 288 Hv to 190 Hv. No significant phase changes were found after annealing heat treatment.

정전분체코팅 공정으로 제조된 SUS316L 분말 다공체의 기공 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Pore Properties of SUS316L Powder Porous Metal Fabricated by Electrostatic Powder Coating Process)

  • Porous metals demonstrate not only excessively low densities, but also novel physical, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and acoustic properties. Thus, porous metals exhibit exceptional performance, which are useful for diesel particulate filters, heat exchangers, and noise absorbers. In this study, SUS316L foam with 90% porosity and $3,000{\mu}m$ pore size is successfully manufactured using the electrostatic powder coating (ESPC) process. The mean size of SUS316L powders is approximately $12.33{\mu}m$. The pore properties are evaluated using SEM and Archimedes. As the quantity of powder coating increases, pore size decreases from 2,881 to $1,356{\mu}m$. Moreover, the strut thickness and apparent density increase from 423.7 to $898.3{\mu}m$ and from 0.278 to $0.840g/cm^3$, respectively. It demonstrates that pore properties of SUS316L powder porous metal are controllable by template type and quantity of powder coating.

  • In general, the characteristics of plasma spray coating are strongly dependent on process conditions. In this paper, Mo and Co alloy coating layers were made by plasma spraying with different spray parameters and characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy(SEM), hardnass test, and wear test. It was found that the coating characteristics were mainly affected by phase composition of the powder, spray distance, arc current, and gas flow rate.

저온 분사 티타늄 코팅층의 특성 및 적층 거동에 미치는 분말 형상과 분말 예열의 영향 (Effects of Powder Morphology and Powder Preheating on the Properties and Deposition Behavior of Titanium Coating Layer Manufactured by Cold Spraying)

  • Cold spray deposition using Titanium powder was carried out to investigate the effects of powder morphology and powder preheating on the coating properties such as porosity and hardness. The in-flight particle velocity of Ti powder in cold spray process was directly measured using the PIV (particle image velocimetry) equipment. Two types of powders (spherical and irregular ones) were used to manufacture cold sprayed coating layer. The results showed that the irregular morphology particle appeared higher in-flight particle velocity than that of the spherical one under the same process condition. The coating layer using irregular morphology powder represented lower porosity level and higher hardness. Two different preheating conditions (no preheating and preheating at $500^{\circ}C$) were used in the process of cold spraying. The porosity decreased and the hardness increased by conducting preheating at $500^{\circ}C$. It was found that the coating properties using different preheating conditions were dependent not on the particle velocity but on the deformation temperature of particle. The deposition mechanism of particles in cold spray process was also discussed based on the experimental results of in flight-particle velocity.

난반사 표면의 3D 스캐닝을 위한 정전분말코팅 연구 (A Study on Electrostatic Powder Coating for 3D Scanning of Diffused Surfaces)

  • Using an optical 3D scanning device to collect data from a diffused reflection surface is very difficult. To solve this problem, there are many applications including a spray-type developer and silicon molds. However, using a developer can cause chemical reactions between objects and particles of the developer and uneven surfaces on the object. To overcome these problems, we suggest an electrostatic powder coating method for even coating of particles onto surfaces for collecting 3D shape data. We have developed an automatic, electrostatic powder-coating machine and performed three different experiments to compare this system with a laser interferometer and a T-scan 3D scanner. As a result, we could ascertain the various characteristics of this new method, including good sensitivity for the various surface states of the bare surface, developer, and electrostatic powder coating. Finally, we verified the outstanding scanning performance and were able to demonstrate that this method achieves quality than traditional methods.
