Powder Injection Molding (PIM) has recently been recognized as an advanced manufacturing technology for low-cost mass production of metal or ceramic parts of complicated geometry. With this regards, design technology of dental scaler tip PIM mold, which has complex shape, with the help of computer-aided analysis for powder injection molding process was developed. Compter aided analysis results, such as filling pattern, weldline formation, and air vent position prediction were investigated and eventually showed good agreements with experimental results.

In this experimental work, the development of a multicomponent binder system based on high density polyethylene (HDPE) and paraffin wax for Powder Injection Molding of Alumina $(Al_2O_3)$ parts was carried out. The optimum composition of the injection mixture was established through mixing torque measurements and a rheological study. The maximum powder loading was 58 vol%. The miscibility of organic components and the optimum injection temperature was evaluated by thermal characterization of binder and feedstock. The thermal debinding cycle was developed on the basis of thermogravimetrical analysis of the binder. After sintering the densities achieved were closed to 98% of the theoretical one.

With the capability of net shaping for complex 3D geometry, powder injection molding (PIM) is widely used for automotive parts, electronics and medical industry. In this study, an ultrasonic dental scaler tip produced by machining process was redesigned for the PIM process. An injection mold was designed and machined to produce the dental scaler tip by the PIM process.
For the fabrication of a multi-pole anisotropic Sr-ferrite magnet by powder injection molding, it is important to control effectively the alignment of magnetic powders during the injection molding process. The effect of the fluidity of powder/binder mixture on the powder alignment was studied with changing the particle sizes and the volume fraction of Sr-ferrite magnetic powders. The critical volume fraction of Sr-ferrite powders increases from 58 vol.% to 64 vol.% as the mean powder size increases from $0.8\;\mu\textrm{m}$ to $1.2\;\mu\textrm{m}$. A Sr-ferrite powder alignment greater than 80 % is achieved at the conditions of an apparent viscosity lower than 1000 poise at $1600\;sec^{-1}$ shear rate, an applied magnetic field higher than 4 kOe, and a powder volume fraction 8 vol.% lower than the critical fraction. The powder alignment obtained during the injection molding process is not much affected by the subsequent processes of debinding and sintering, showing the magnetic properties of 3.8 kG of remanent flux density and 3.37 kOe of intrinsic coercivity.

In recent years, micro powder injection molding $(\mu-PIM)$ is being explored as an economical fabrication method for microcomponents in microsystems technology (MST). Technical and economic comparison was performed for $\mu-PIM$ processes. Molding experiment and simulation during the filling process were performed to evaluate several different geometries and processing conditions. The influence of material parameters and process conditions on mold filling were examined as a function of features size using microchannels as an example. It was found that the heat conductivity and viscosity of feedstock, geometry and mold temperature were the most critical parameters for complete filling of micro features.
This study has focused on manufacturing technique of powder injection molding of watch case made from zirconia powder. A series of computer simulation process was applied to prediction of the flow pattern in the inside of the mould to clarifying the change of sintering shrinkage depended on flow direction. The material properties of melted feedstock inclusive of the PVT graph and thermal viscosity flowage properties were measured for obtaining the input data in computer simulation. Also, molding experiment was conducted and the results of experiment showed that good agreement with simulation results for flow pattern and weld line location. On the other hand, gravity and inertia effect have an influence on velocity of melt front because of high density of ceramic powder particles in powder injection molding against the polymer injection molding process. In the experiment, the position of melt front was compared with upper gate and lower gate position. The gravity and inertia effect could be confirmed in the experimental results.
Powder injection molding (PIM), which combines the advantages of powder metallurgy and plastic injection molding technologies, has become one of the most efficient methods for the net-shape production of both metal and ceramic components. In this work, plasma display panel glass bodies are prepared by the PIM process. After sintering, the hot isostatic pressing (HIP) process is adopted for improving the density and mechanical properties of the PIMed glass bodies. The mechanical and thermal behaviors of the prepared specimens are analyzed through bending tests and dilatometric analysis, respectively. After HIPing, the flexural strength of the prepared glass body reaches up to 92.17 MPa, which is 1.273 and 2.178 times that of the fused glass body and PIMed bodies, respectively. Moreover, a thermal expansion coefficient of $7.816{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ is obtained, which coincides with that of the raw glass powder ($7.5-8.0{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$), indicating that the glass body is fully densified after the HIP process.

The powder injection molding process having advantages in manufacturing three-dimensional precision parts essentially requires a debinding process before sintering to remove the binders used for preparing feedstock. In this study, powder injection molding of translucent alumina was performed, and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) is used as a supercritical fluid that makes it possible to remove a large amount of binder, which is paraffin wax. The relationship between the optical property of translucent alumina and the debinding condition (temperature and pressure) of supercritical $CO_2$ was investigated. As temperature and pressure increased, extraction rate of the binder showed rising tendency and average grain size after sintering process was relatively fine. On the other hand, optical transmittance was reduced. As a result, the debinding condition at $50^{\circ}C$ and 20 MPa that represents the lowest extraction rate, $8.19{\times}10^{-3}m^2/sec$, corresponds to the largest grain size of $14.7{\mu}m$ and the highest optical transmittance of 45.2%.
The production of micro components is one of the leading technologies in the fields of information and communiation, medical and biotechnology, and micro sensor and micro actuator system. Microfabrication (micromachining) techniques such as X-ray lithography, electroforming, micromolding and excimer laser ablation are used for the production of micro components out of silicon, polymer and a limited number of pure metals or binary alloys. However, since the first development of microfabrication technologies there have been demands for the cost-effective replication in large scale series as well as the extended range of available material. One such promising process is micro powder injection molding (PIM), which inherits the advantages of the conventional PIM technology, such as low production cost, shape complexity, applicability to many materials, applicability to many materials, and good tolerance. This paper reports on a fundamental investigation of the application of W-Cu powder to micro metal injection molding (MIM), especially in view of achieving a good filling and a safe removal of a micro mold conducted in the experiment. It is absolutely legitimate and meaningful, at the present state of the technique, to continue developing the micro MIM towards production processes for micro components.
CAE technology is an integrated tool including all aspects such as powder, binder system, mixing, injection molding, debinding and sintering. Therefore, CAE technology is considered as one of core technologies for PIM industry in the future. Recently many researchers are developing not only CAE software itself but also application procedures of CAE software. In this study, the applications for CAE technology in PIM industry are presented including feedstock mixing effect, several cases of troubleshooting and optimization procedure.
