EPIC Simulation of Water Quality from Land Application of Poultry Litter

  • Two application rates (9 and 18 t/ha) of poultry litter and a recommended rate of commercial fertilizer were studied to determine their effects on nutrient (N and P) losses in surface and subsurface runoff and loadings in soil layers from conventionally-tilled com by the treatments. The model predicted higher sediment losses than observed data from all treatments. The overpredicted sediment losses resulted in overprediction of organic-N and sediment-P losses in surface runoff. Simulated soluble-P losses in surface runoff were close to observed data, while NO3-N losses in surface runoff were underpredicted from all treatments. Observed NO3-N concentrations in leachate at 1.0-m depth from commercial fertilizer treatment were fairly well predicted. But the concentratins were overpredicted from poultry litter treatments due to high simulation of organic-N mineralization simulated by the model.

Effect of Bacillus Subtilis-based Direct-fed Microbials on Immune Status in Broiler Chickens Raised on Fresh or Used Litter

  • Type of dietary direct-fed microbials (DFMs) or poultry litter could directly influence the composition of gut microbiota. Gut microbiota plays an important role in shaping the developing immune system and maintaining the homeostasis of the mature immune system in mammal and chickens. The present study was carried out to investigate the interaction among litter, DFMs and immunity in broiler chickens exposed to a field-simulated environment. Immune status of broiler chickens was assessed by serum antibodies against Eimeria spp. and Clostridium spp. and intestinal cytokine mRNA expression. The current experimental design had a $3{\times}2$ factorial arrangement of treatments with three types of litter, i.e., fresh litter or used litter that was obtained from a farm with no disease outbreak (used litter) or a farm with history of a gangrenous dermatitis outbreak (GD litter), and two dietary treatments with or without DFMs. It was found that either DFM addition or type of litter significantly affected anticoccidial antibody levels of broiler chickens at d 42. In general, dietary DFMs increased the anticoccidial antibodies in the fresh-litter raised chickens, but lowered the levels in the GD-litter raised chickens. Serum antibodies against Clostridium perfringens ${\alpha}$-toxin were significantly (p<0.05) higher in chickens raised on GD litter compared with those raised on fresh litter. Cytokine mRNA expression was significantly (p<0.05) altered by either the type of litter or DFMs. Of interest, dietary DFMs lowered interferon-${\gamma}$, interleukin 1beta, and CXCLi2 cytokine mRNA expression in chickens raised on fresh litter but increased them in GD-litter raised chickens. In conclusion, dietary DFMs modulate various immune parameters of broiler chickens, but the DFM-mediated effects were dependent upon the type of litter on which chickens were raised.

Influence of Depth of Rice Husk Litter on Broiler Performance, Litter Dampness and its Coccidial Oocyst Population During Winter

  • Four groups each containing 48 seven-day-old broiler chicks were reared for 7 weeks during winter on rice husk litter spread to depths of 20, 30, 40 or 50 mm. Broiler performance was evaluated in terms of weight gain, feed consumption, feed efficiency and production number. Litter dampness was determined and coccidial oocyst populations were counted at different weeks of age. The depth of litter did not significantly affect live weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio, liveability or production number. Variation in moisture contents of litter was observed but the coccidial oocysts count per gramme of litter was within the safety level and therefore, there was no outbreak of coccidiosis in any group. Use of rice husk litter at different depths (20 to 50 mm) did not cause any breast blisters or leg abnormalities. It was concluded that rice husk can be used as litter at depths of between 20 and 50 mm during winter to raise broilers without affecting performance characteristics and health of birds.

  • The GLEAMS nutrient submodel was evaluated to predict nutrient losses in surface runoff following application of two rates (9 and 18 t/ha) of poultry litter and a recommended rate of commercial fertilizer on corn plots. Nutrient submodel was evaluated with calibrated runoff and sediment losses to the observed field data. Simulation of nitrogen transformation effects on nitrogen losses in surface runoff did not agree with field data. The model simulated higher NH$_4$-N than NO$_3$-N losses in surface runoff, while field data showed the opposite.

동일 축사내에서 Aluminum Sulfate 처리와 단백질 수준에 따른 육계의 생산성과 암모니아 가스 발생 및 깔짚내 수용성 P의 함량에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Dietary Protein Levels and Addition of Alumincum Sulfate to Litter on Broiler Performance, Ammonia Production and Soluble Phosphorus Content of Litter)

  • In this study, broilers were raised up to 6 weeks of age in a single room to determine if different levels of dietary protein or addition of aluminum sulfate[alum, $Al_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ㆍ14$H_2O$] to the litter affected growth performance, production of ammonia(NH$_3$) and soluble phosphorus(SP) content of the litter.The experimental treatments consisted of six treatments in a 2x3 factorial arrangements: T$_1$=23% protein + 0.2% alum to litter; T$_2$=21% protein + 0.2% alum to litter; T$_3$=19% protein + 0.2% alum to litter; T$_4$=23% protein + no alum; T$_{5}$=21% protein + no alum; T$_{6}$=19% protein + no alum. For broiler performance, there was no effect of alum addition to the litter, but the dietary protein levels significantly affected feed intake from days 22 to 42(P<0.05) and day 0 to 42(P< 0.05), weight gain during all periods(P<0.05 or 0.01), and feed:gain from day 0 to 21(P<0.05) and day 0 to 42(P<0.05). Alum addition to the litter did not affect body weight at 21 and 42 days, but dietary protein levels has a significant effect on it at both 21(P<0.0l) and 42 days(P<0.05). 한국형 한협 육계의 행동 특성과 성장성에 미치는 Litter Type과 Gender의 영향 (Effects of Litter Type and Gender on Behavior Characteristics and Growth Performance of Korean Hanhyup Broiler)

  • The Korean Hanhyup broiler has commercialized native meat-type chicken. This study aimed to determine the effects of two types of litter material-sawdust and rice husk, and gender on the Korean Hanhyup broiler. Chicks (n=416) were randomly assigned in a $2{\times}2$ factorial design by type of litter material and gender. The behavior of chicken's was monitored continuously for 12 hours during the $1^{st}$ through $8^{th}$ week of age. The time spent on standing, sitting, and walking and the frequency of drinking, feeding, preening, dust bathing, flapping, and aggressive pecking, and pecking of chicken's behavior were recorded. The behavior of chickens during the starter (1 to 4 weeks) and finisher period (5 to 8 weeks) was compared to observe the changes upon maturity. Our results indicate that litter material type and gender have no effect on the behavior of chickens. However, aggressive pecking and pecking caused increment in the rice husk as compared to sawdust (P<0.05). Sawdust as litter material for bedding was found to be better than rice husk with respect to Korean Hanhyup broiler behavior.

THE EFFECT OF DIETARY PROTEIN AND ALUM IN LITTER ON PERFORMANCE, NH3 GAS CONCENTRATION AND LITTER COMPOSITION IN BROILER

  • 본 시험은 broiler performance, litter N농도가 어떻게 유지되며, NH3 gas 농도가 사료에 ammino acid와 Vitamin D를 보충하여 litter에 Alum을 첨가하여 저수준 단백질 수준을 감소시키는지 결정하기 위해 실시하였다. 이 실험은 각각 처리마다 3반복 90마리를 세가지의 다른 단백질 수준을 가지고서 starter period(1-214)와 grower period(22-420)로 나누었다. 단백질처리는 각기 starter에는 평균 23.0(control 71), 20.4(W)와 18.0(73)%로 grower에서는 21.0(control 71), l9.3(n) and 17.o(73)%로 구성된다. control과 비교하면 ammino acid 수준은 비슷하다. Alum은 rice bran kg당 2009에 Control을 제외하고 각 처리구에 혼합했다. 결과는 3wks와 6wks 동안 급여한 사료에서 Control이하인 저수준 단백질은 feed gain은 증가하였으며, feed intake와 weight gain은 감소하였다. 그러나 처리간에는 유의차(P<0.05)가 없었으며 Alum을 litter에 혼합할 때(P<0.05) 저수준 단백질은 NH3 gas농도가 74.8-80.9% 감소되었다. litter에 Alum을 첨가하는 조작은 NH3 gas농도를 감소시킨다는 것을 보여준다.

액상염화알루미늄을 이용한 축산 폐기물 속의 중금속 저감 효과 (Using Liquid Aluminum Chloride to Reduce Heavy Metals from Animal Wastes)

  • Recent research has demonstrated that treating poultry litter with alum (aluminum sulfate) and aluminum chloride can remove environmental threats (ammonia, soluble phosphorus and odor) posed by litter. However, scientific information available on heavy metal in poultry litter with liquid aluminum chloride is still lacked. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of applying liquid aluminum chloride to rice hulls on heavy metals and to provide basic information to producers. Six hundred 0-d-old broiler were assigned to 4 treatments (control, 100 g, 200 g and 300 g of liquid $AlCl_3$/kg of rice hulls, respectively) with 3 replicates of 50 birds. The experimental period lasted for 6 weeks. Liquid $AlCl_3$ was sprayed on the rice hulls surface using a small hand pump. Total Al contents increased (P<0.05) with the increasing levels of liquid $AlCl_3$ levels over time in comparison with control groups. Total Cu and Pb were lowered in all liquid $AlCl_3$ treatments compared with the controls during 6 weeks. Significant differences in all treatments were found for total Cu contents at 2, 3 and 5 weeks and total Pb at 0, 1, 2 and 3 weeks. Total Zn contents decreased with time when compared with controls. However, no significant differences in total Zn contents were observed among all treatments. In light of environmental managements, spraying liquid $AlCl_3$ to rice hulls indicated the significant advantages in reducing heavy metals as well as improving poultry industrial competitiveness.

육계 농장 깔짚에서의 주요 바이러스 병원체 오염 실태 조사 (Monitoring of Major Viral Pathogen Contamination in New and Reused Broiler Farm Litter)

  • 새 깔짚을 사용하는 16개 농가와 깔짚을 교체하지 않는 15개 농가를 대상으로 2009년 7월부터 11월까지 5개월에 걸쳐 농가당 2회 입식 기준으로 병아리 입식 전과 출하 전 깔짚을 수거하여 주요 바이러스 병원체의 오염 실태를 조사하고, 생산성을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 조사 기간 동안 깔짚을 교체해 주는 농가의 75%(12/16농가)에서, 깔짚을 재사용하는 농가의 73%(11/15)에서 37주의 바이러스가 분리되었다. 바이러스분리 시기별로보면병아리 입식 직전계사에서3주, 육계 출하 직전 계사에서 34주가 분리되었다. 깔짚 형태로 보면 새 깔짚을 사용하는 계사에서 17주, 깔짚을 재사용하는 계사에서 20주가 분리되어 계사 내 바이러스 병원체 오염정도는 깔짚 교체여부와 크게 관련성이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 분리된 바이러스 37주는 병원체별로 보면 IBV 14주, IBDV 2주, FAdV 9주 그리고 CIAV 12주였다. 이 중 IBDV 1주와 CIAV 2주는 입식 직전 계사에서 분리되었다. 본 연구에서 조사한 31개 농장 62개 계군의 생산지수를 조사한 결과, 깔짚 교체 농가와 재활용 농가 간 생산성은 유의성이 있는 차이가 나타나지 않았다.
