  • The "Potato Gun," a simple heat engine, is fabricated, tested and analyzed as a part of engineering education program of combustion and propulsion classes. Combustor pressure is predicted by the chemical equilibrium analysis of a constant volume combustor. Then, the internal ballistics, the conversion of thermal energy into the mechanical energy of a projectile, is predicted though the expansion process. The trajectory of a projectile is estimated by considering the aerodynamic effect around the spherical projectile. The energy conversion efficiency and the equivalence ratio of the fuel-air mixture could be estimated by the comparison of the experimental results and the theoretical prediction. The present work would be an example of attracting the interest of students for the application of the engineering principles at undergraduate level by recycling the waste materials.

  • Physicochemical properties of commercial corn, sweet potato, potato, wheat and mungbean starches were investigated. Amylose contents of each starch were 23, 20, 24, 28 and 39%, whereas water binding capacities were 92, 87, 83, 79 and 77%, respectively. Average granule size of potato starch was considerably higher than that of other starches. In terms of color, lightness and whiteness of sweet potato starch were relatively lower than those of other starches. Comparing with other starches, the viscosity of potato starch was the highest level. The results also showed that textural properties of potato and sweet Potato starch gels were similar. Corn starch gel had lower hardness and higher cohesiveness than others.

  • Effective moisture and nutrient management during tuber formation and growth significantly impacts potato yields. While many farms rely on natural rainfall, some enhance potato growth and yield using furrow irrigation, fountain hoses, sprinklers, and drip hoses. However, there is limited research on the optimal fertigation levels for potato cultivation in Korea. This study aims to determine the optimal moisture content for spring potato cultivation and establish suitable fertilization standards. To investigate the effect of soil moisture content on potato growth and yield, tests were conducted with soil moisture levels set at 10% and 20%. Results showed that growth and yield were highest in the 20% treatment group for both the 'Superior' and 'Seohong' cultivars. To determine additional fertilizer standards, the control group (basic fertilization without additional fertilizer) and treatments of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 times the standard fertilizer amount were applied using compound fertilizer (NPK). Among these treatments, the growth and yield of potatoes were optimal in the 50-100% fertilization group for both cultivars. Therefore, to maximize yield during spring potato cultivation, it is recommended to maintain soil moisture at 20% and apply NPK fertilizer at 50-100% of the standard amount during the tuber formation and enlargement periods. This approach can effectively increase both the above-ground biomass and tuber yield.

  • Efficacy of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria(PGPR) Bacillus vallismortis strain EXTN-1 has been proved in eliciting induced systemic resistance(ISR) in several crops. The present paper described the beneficial effects of EXTN-1 in potato as increase in yield and chlorophyll content, and plant protection against Potato Virus Y and X(PVY & PVX). EXTN-1 induced systemic resistance to the plants resulting in significant disease suppression in the field. Also the plants under treatment with EXTN-1 had higher chlorophyll content. The bacterized plants had significantly higher yields over the untreated control plants. The strain induced activation of defense genes, PR-1a and PDF 1.2 in transgenic tobacco model, which indicated the possible role of both SA, and JA pathways in EXTN-1 mediated plant protection against crop diseases.

  • As the demand for processing potatoes increases, imports of raw potatoes and potato products are increasing, so it is necessary to expand potato production as raw materials for processing in Korea. Potato varieties for processing that can be grown in fall have been developed, but research on cultivation technology and processing quality management technology to improve chip processing quality is very insufficient. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the optimal harvest time by investigating the quantity and chipping characteristics of potato chips during autumn cultivation. As the test varieties, the chip processing varieties "Saebong", "Eunsun", and "Geumnaru" were used, and the potato cultivation site was the Seocheon-gun Test field (214 Gaeya-ri) of the Chungcheongnam-do. The test treatment was at harvest time after spring cultivation, and the potatoes were harvested at 70, 80, 90, and 100 days after sowing based on the sowing time. The investigation items were potato productivity (total yield, yield of standard processing, and number of tubers) and chip-processing characteristics (chip color, dry matter content, glucose content, etc.). As a result of examining the yield characteristics according to the harvest time, statistical significance was not found according to the treatment. The total yield (ton/ha) was 27.5 to 30.5, and there was no significant difference depending on the time of 70 to 100 days after harvest. The standard quantity for processing (yield of 81-250g potatoes per unit) also showed a similar trend. In chipping characteristics according to harvest time, statistical significance was high in specific gravity and glucose content. The specific gravity was highest at 1.077 at 70 days after harvest, and the glucose (mg/dL) content was the lowest at 37.5 at 80 days after harvest. Statistical significance was not recognized, but chip color (L value) was the highest at 64.4 at 70 days after harvest. Therefore, it is judged that the optimal harvesting time for chip processing is 70 to 80 days after sowing.

  • This study was performed to compare alcohol fermentation ability and saccharification of potatoes and sweet potatoes. Cooperated with ultrasonification process is not contain pass through cook process, but contain process using ulrasonification instead cook process. In result of sugar contents measurements sweet potato and potato was highest of a family at 6 hours fermentation, and it showed the highest sugar contents as each 11.5 brix, 10.4 brix. In result of alcohol contents measurements of sweet potato and potato, highest of a family in 4 days, and it showed th highest alcohol contents as each 8.2, 6.0%. Finally complex enzymes II process revealed similar activities like cook process.

  • Leading enterprises in contract farming are in control of agricultural production and influence the structure of the agricultural system in contract areas. This study focuses on the contract farming of potatoes for manufacturing chips, which uses a high proportion of domestic raw materials, and identifies the characteristics of contract farming between confectionery company 𐩒 and potato farms in Haean-myeon, Yanggu-gun, Gangwon-do. This study also analyzes the impact of contract farming on local agriculture from the perspective of the industrialization of agriculture. The results of this study demonstrated that contracting companies ensured the quality of potatoes and smooth agricultural operations by first preferentially selecting farmhouses with land that is easy to work with and then supplying the necessary agricultural machinery to promote the intensification of their work. In addition, contracting companies influenced the centralization of the agriculture sector by selecting farmhouses capable of contracting over a certain scale and guaranteeing them sales channels and the specialization of potato farming in contract areas, mainly through the supply of processing varieties and the spread of cultivation technology. The results confirmed that these three dimensions of contract farming promoted the industrialization of local agriculture.
