  • This study was carried out to estimate the effect of NPK fertilization on tree seedling growth and chemical properties of soil. Seedlings of Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Fraxinus rhynchophylla were planted in May 1998 in the nursery at Gariwang mountain, Kangwondo, and seven NPK fertilizer plots(4, 12, 28, 60, 124, 252, and $508g/m^2$) and one non-fertilized plot were used to meet the study objectives. Seedlings of Pinus koraiensis and Acer mono were planted in April 1998 in plastic pots of nursery at Chungnam National University, and seven NPK fertilizer plots(0.5, 1.5, 3.5, 7.5, 15.5, 33.5 and 63.5g) and one non-fertilized plot were used to meet the study objectives. To estimate the relative growth ratios of the seedlings, height and root collar diameter of the seedlings were measured after planting and also in October 1998. Soil samples were collected in October 1998 from the nursery of Gariwang mountain and the plastic pot of the nursery of Chungnam National University. The relative growth ratios of height and root collar diameter in Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Acer mono were greater in all fertilized plot than non-fertilized plot, but there was no difference in relative growth ratio of height and root collar diameter of Pinus koraiensis between the fertilized and non-fertilized plots. NPK fertilization increased soil P and K, decreased exchangeable Ca and Mg, and base saturation, and pH. Fertilization resulted in no difference in total soil N between the fertilized and non-fertilized plots of nursery of Gariwang mountain, but increased in total soil N in plastic pots. Fertilization increased the growth of hardwood species and had changed soil chemical properties of this fertilizer trials.

  • This study was conducted to examine the possibility of producing poinsettia with various growing media containing used perlite and rockwool slabs as medium components. Pot plants of Euphorbia pulcherrima 'Freedom Red' were grown in 10 media containing used perlite and particles of rockwool slabs at various ratios including 1:1 and 1:3 (v/v). Medium containing used perlite and peatmoss at 1:3 (v/v) was employed as the control treatment. Height, root length, length of the longest branch, number of roots, leaf area, and width and length of the largest bract of plants grown in media containing used perlite were significantly greater than those in the control. Stem diameter and bract count were not affected by the medium composition. From the results, used perlite and rockwool slabs were proved to be a practically useful materials as medium components for pot production of poinsettia plants.

  • Superparamagnetic Zinc ferrite submicropheres are firstly synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal approach at $200-215^{\circ}C$ for 4-8 hours. $ZnCl_2$, $FeCl_3$ and NaAc are used as precursors with ethylene glycol solvent. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) data indicate that $ZnFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles with the grain size around $15{\pm}3nm$ can be successfully synthesized via the one-pot method. The scanning/transmission electronic microscope (SEM/TEM) images further show the samples are submicrospheres self-assembled by nanoparticles with size about 375-500 nm changed with reaction conditions. Room-temperature vibration magnetic strength measurements (VMS) demonstrates the as-obtained $ZnFe_2O_4$ submicrospheres show prefect superparamagnetism, whose coercivity force and remanence are practically nil. The reaction temperature and time influence on the crystallinity, diameter, saturated magnetic intensity and morphology of the particles.

  • A new pot chrysanthemum cultivar 'Peace Angel' was bred by cross pollination between 'Peace Yellow' and 'Lompoc' at the Yesan Chrysanthemum Experiment Station. The cross was made in 2003 and 'Peace Angel' was finally selected in 2007 after investigating its characteristics from 2005 to 2007. It flowers in the middle of October under natural conditions in Korea climate, but year-round production is also possible by short day treatment in summer or lighting treatment in winter. Flower shape is anemone type with pink petals and a yellow green center. Flower diameter is about 5.6 cm and the number of flowers per stem is 23.0, respectively. When short day treatment is necessary for manipulation of flower formation, 7 weeks of short day treatment is enough for the production. The shelf life is 22.4 days in the autumn season.

  • This experiment was done to observe the morphological change of plant under the cultivation of deep ploughing and heavy fertilization with paddy rice 1963 at Seoul. A seedling of 35 days old was transplanted June 1st, in a galvanized iron pot with botton 20 cm in diameter, which was painted white inside and filled with sand mixed with fertilizers. The treatments were 15cm soil depth of normal fertilization, 30cm of fertilization twice and 45cm of fertilization thrice. Replications were three. The plant was observed on main stem Aug. 6 before heading, Sep. 12 after heading and Oct. 17 at the time of harvest at the same pot. The results are as follows. The length and the width of leaf blades of the upper part on main stem have the tendency to be big and vigorous with the deep ploughing and heavy fertilizations(Fig 1, 2, 3 and 4). The number and the size of vascular bundles of main stem is to increase when the paddy is cultivated with the method of deep ploughing and heavy fertilizations(Fig 5). The number and the weight of roots of main stem increases with deep ploughing and heavy fertilizations(Fig 6).

  • This study was carried to investigate suitable additive materials and its mixing ratio in pot cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus. The main substrate for Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation was poplar sawdust plus with waste cotton at the ratio 1 : 1 (v/v). Using pot diameter and substrate weight were 12 cm and 1 kg/pot, respectively. The higher amount of additives resulted in higher total nitrogen content and C/N ratio of substrate also decreased according to increasing mixing ratio of additives. The supplementation of cotton seed flour more than 20% caused the failure of devolopment of fruit body. The hardness of substrate in supplementation of rice bran after mycelial growth was highest any other additives. The ratio of harvest was highest in supplementation of beet pulp, $75{\sim}85%$. The fruit bodies yield and biological efficiency of supplemented with 20% beet pulp were highest during second flush.

  • This study was carried out to develop cultivation techniques of Climacium japonicum in transparent pot. We analyzed effect of different soil moisture content, air exposure degree, bed soil and ground cover moss on the growth of Climacium japonicum. The best humidity condition in transparent pot culture was 60~80% and a mixture of bed soil with peatmoss : perlite as 7:3 ratio was effective to growth. Two holes(each diameter is 4 mm) in the cover were also effective to the growth and control moisture in the transparent pot. The best mixture of bed soil was moss with peatmoss : pelite(7:3) in the pot culture but price of moss is expensive, the moss treatment was not practical. Total of 10 moss species were selected as ground cover plant; Hypnum erectiusculum Sull. et Lesq., Thuidium kanedae Sak., Hypnum plumaeforme Wils., Trachycystis microphylla Lindb., Bryum argenteum Hedw., Hypnum oldhamii Jaeg., Funaria hygrometrica Hedw., Leucobryum glaucum Aongstr., Polytrichum commune Hedw. and Weissia controversa Hedw. The plant height of selected moss was smaller than that of Climacium japonicum so these moss were very effective to cover the ground.

  • In order to find out the most favorable shape and structure of pot for conger eel, Astroconger myriaster(Brevoort), the box type, tube type and flat box type of net pots and the pipe type of plastic pot were prepared. Then, the ability of the pots attracting the eel into them were investigated through a tank experiment. The attracting ability was highest in the pipe type without distinction of its length, 50cm and 60cm. In the flat box type, the effective height of pot and the diameter of entrance tip turned out 5cm respectively. But the ability was very poor in the rest pots, especially in the tube type. Thus, the pipe type and flat box type of pots were employed again in a field experiment for comparing their catches with those of the conventional bamboo and plastic pots. In the experiment, the catches were the most in the pipe type and second in the flat box type. But the bamboo and plastic pots both produced comparatively low catches, showing no significant difference between them. It was therefore concluded that the pipe type of pot might be the most favorable one for catching the conger eel.
