Monitoring the performance and estimating the remaining useful life of aging civil infrastructure in the United States has been identified as a major objective in the civil engineering community. Structural health monitoring has emerged as a central tool to fulfill this objective. This paper presents a review of the major structural monitoring programs that have been recently implemented in the United States, focusing on the integrity and performance assessment of large-scale structural systems. Applications where response data from a monitoring program have been used to detect and correct structural deficiencies are highlighted. These applications include (but are not limited to): i) Post-earthquake damage assessment of buildings and bridges; ii) Monitoring of cables vibration in cable-stayed bridges; iii) Evaluation of the effectiveness of technologies for retrofit and seismic protection, such as base isolation systems; and iv) Structural damage assessment of bridges after impact loads resulting from ship collisions. These and many other applications show that a structural health monitoring program is a powerful tool for structural damage and condition assessment, that can be used as part of a comprehensive decision-making process about possible actions that can be undertaken in a large-scale civil infrastructure system after potentially damaging events.
Three dimensional modeling for seafloor topography is essential to monitoring displacements in underwater structures as well as all sorts of disasters along the shore. MBES is a system that is capable of high-density water depth measurement for seafloor topography and is in broad uses for gathering 3D data and detecting displacements. MBES data, however, contain random errors that take place in the equipment offset and surveying process and require systematic researches on the correction of wrong depth measurements. Thus this study set out to propose a post-processing technique to eliminate an array of random errors taking place after equipment offset correction and basic noise correction in the MBES system and analyze its applicability to seafloor topography modeling by applying it to the subject area.
Post-Environmental impact investigation(Post-EII) plays an important role in investigating and reducing the environmental impacts of construction operations in South Korea. To date, it has been estimated that the results for Post-EII showed the low reliability; however, understanding those reliability has rarely been studied. We investigated the effect on water qualities by construction operations of the quarry mine, training center, and golf club in South Korea. In addition, the results of water quality analysis in this study were compared and analyzed with those in Post-EII. Treated wastewater in a quarry mine showed high concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand(BOD), suspended solid(SS), total nitrogen(T-N), and total phosphorus(T-P). Compared with the water quality results between this study and Post-EII, the concentrations of BOD, SS, T-N, and T-P in the treated wastewater were higher than the interquartile range(IQR) as well as the range of the results from minimum to maximum in Post-EII(p<0.05). The concentrations of BOD, SS, T-N, and T-P in treated wastewater were high under constructions in a training center. The concentrations of BOD and SS exceeded the consultation standard for the treated wastewater. These concentrations showed the significant difference with the IQR and the range from minimum to maximum of the water quality results in Post-EII(p<0.05). Therefore, the management and monitoring for water quality should be conducted in the treated wastewater by of construction operations. In addition, the alternative to enhance the reliability for the water quality results should be sought in Post-EII.
Tendon failures in bonded post-tensioned bridges over the last two decades have motivated ongoing investigations on various aspects of unbonded tendons and their monitoring methods. Recent research shows that change of strain distribution in anchor heads can be useful in detecting wire breakage in unbonded construction. Based on this strain variation, this paper develops a damage detection model that enables an automated tendon monitoring system to identify and locate wire breaks. The first part of this paper presents an experimental program conducted to study the strain variation in anchor heads by generating wire breaks using a mechanical device. The program comprised three sets of tests with fully populated 19-strand anchor head and evaluated the levels of strain variation with number of wire breaks in different strands. The sensitivity of strain variation with wire breaks in circumferential and radial directions of anchor head in addition to the axial direction (parallel to the strand) were investigated and the measured axial strains were found to be the most sensitive. The second part of the paper focuses on formulating the wire breakage detection framework. A finite element model of the anchorage assembly was created to demonstrate the algorithm as well as to investigate the asymmetric strain distribution observed in experimental results. In addition, as almost inevitably encountered during tendon stressing, the effects of differential wedge seating on the proposed model have been analyzed. A sensitivity analysis has been performed at the end to assess the robustness of the model with random measurement errors.
Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a standardized telephone monitoring intervention in addressing the symptom experience and improving self-management ability in patients with heart failure. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pre-post test design was used. There were 17 patients in the experimental group, and 16 in the control group. According to the protocol, patients in the experimental group received 15 to 30 minute-telephone monitoring four times, once a week for 4 weeks. Data were analyzed by ${\chi}^2$-test, Mann-Whitney U test. Results: 1) The experimental group showed a significant increase in compliance with self-management compared to the control group. 2) There was a significant decrease in degree for 3 symptoms(DOE, PND, & continuing fatigue) in the experimental group, after telephone monitoring. However, the experimental group did not show significant decrease in the degree of the total symptom experiences. Conclusions: The results of this study provide evidence that standardized telephone monitoring is effective in relieving symptom experience and improving self-management in patients with heart failure over the course of telephone monitoring.
Corrosion of prestressing tendons and wire fractures in grouted post-tensioned prestressed concrete bridges have been considered as a serious safety problem. In bridge evaluation the condition of prestressing tendons should be inspected, and if corroded tendons are found, the loss of tendon area should be included when we calculate the ultimate strength. In the previous study, it was evaluated that continuous acoustic monitoring techniques could be considered as a reliable non-destructive method for detecting wire fractures of fully grouted post-tensioned prestressing tendons. In the present study, an experimental test was performed for detecting wire fractures of post-tensioned prestressing tendons which are prestressed lower than current design level. A 10 m prestressed concrete beam was fabricated, which included two tendons prestressed 66 percentage and 40 percentage of tensile strength, respectively. The corrosion of two tendons was induced by an accelerated corrosion equipment and the test beam was monitored by using seven acoustic sensors and a continuous acoustic monitoring system. From each prestressing tendon, two acoustic signals of wire fractures were successfully detected and source locations were estimated within 20 mm error. Based on the test results, it is considered that continuous acoustic monitoring techniques can be applied to detect low-prestressed wire fracture in fully grouted post-tensioned prestressed concrete beams.

In this study, we developed rotating machine vibration condition monitoring system based upon Windows NT and DSP Board. Developed system includes signal analysis module, trend monitoring and simple diagnosis using threshold value. Trend analysis and report generation are offered with database management tool which was developed in MS-ACCESS environment. Post-processor, based upon Matlab, is developed for vibration signal analysis and fault detection using statistical pattern recognition scheme based upon Bayes discrimination rule and neural networks. Concerning to Bayes discrimination rule, the developed system contains the linear discrimination rule with common covariance matrices and the quadratic discrimination rule under different covariance matrices. Also the system contains k-nearest neighbor method to directly estimate a posterior probability of each class. The result of case studies with the data acquired from Pyung-tak LNG pump and experimental setup show that the system developed in this research is very effective and useful.

Collapse of cut slope includes many uncertainties in view of the reason and time. So, in the past, risky cut slopes have been dealt after they've been collapsed through post-management measures. But recently, advanced disaster prevention system is required, and as a part of that RTMS(Real-Time Monitoring System) was developed. In this study, stability of risky cut slope was evaluated by site investigation. To grasp deformation behavior characteristics of slope, numerical analysis based on FEM was performed and using results of that, specific standards for installation of Real-Time Monitoring System were suggested.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems can provide valuable information regarding the safety of structures during and after ground motions which can be used by authorities to reduce post-earthquake hazards. Strain gages as a key element play an important role in the success of SHM systems. Reducing the number of required strain gages while keeping the efficiency of SHM system not only can reduce the cost of structural health monitoring but also avoids storage and process of uninformative data. In this study, a method based on performance based seismic design of structures is proposed for ideal placement of stain gages in structures. The robustness and efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated through installation of strain gages on an Airport Traffic Control (ATC) Tower. The obtained results show that the number of required strain gages decrease significantly.
