  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach towards multiple kernels interval type-2 possibilistic fuzzy C-means(PFCM) based on interval type-2 possibilistic fuzzy c-means(IT2PFCM) and possibilistic fuzzy c-means using multiple kernels( PFCM-MK). In case of noisy data or overlapping cluster prototypes, fuzzy C-means gives poor performance in comparison to possibilistic fuzzy C-means(PFCM). Moreover, to address the uncertainty associated with fuzzifier parameter m, interval type-2 possibilistic fuzzy C-means(PFCM) is used. Most of the practical data available are complex and non-linearly separable. In such cases using Gaussian kernels proves helpful. Therefore, in order to overcome all these issues, we have integrated multiple kernels possibilistic fuzzy C-means(PFCM) into interval type-2 possibilistic fuzzy C-means(IT2PFCM) and propose the idea of multiple kernels based interval type-2 possibilistic fuzzy C-means(IT2PFCM-MK).

  • The fuzzy kernel c-means (FKCM) algorithm, which uses a kernel function, can obtain more desirable clustering results than fuzzy c-means (FCM) for not only spherical data but also non-spherical data. However, it can be sensitive to noise as in the FCM algorithm. In this paper, a kernel function is applied to the possibilistic c-means (PCM) algorithm and is shown to be robust for data with additive noise. Several experimental results show that the proposed kernel possibilistic c-means (KPCM) algorithm out performs the FKCM algorithm for general data with additive noise.

  • Fuzzy c-means (FCM) and possibilistic c-means (PCM) are the two most well-known clustering algorithms in fuzzy clustering area, and have been applied in many applications in their original or modified forms. However, FCM's noise sensitivity problem and PCM's overlapping cluster problem are also well known. Recently there have been several attempts to combine both of them to mitigate the problems and possibilistic fuzzy c-means (PFCM) showed promising results. In this paper, we proposed a modified PFCM using regularization to reduce noise sensitivity in PFCM further. Regularization is a well-known technique to make a solution space smooth and an algorithm noise insensitive. The proposed algorithm, PFCM with regularization (PFCM-R), can take advantage of regularization and further reduce the effect of noise. Experimental results are given and show that the proposed method is better than the existing methods in noisy conditions.

  • Ganglion cysts are benign soft tissues usually encountered in the wrist. In this paper, we propose a method to extract a ganglion cyst region from ultrasonography images by using image segmentation. The proposed method using the possibilistic c-means (PCM) clustering method is applicable to ganglion cyst extraction. The methods considered in this thesis are fuzzy stretching, median filter, PCM clustering, and connected component labeling. Fuzzy stretching performs well on ultrasonography images and improves the original image. Median filter reduces the speckle noise without decreasing the image sharpness. PCM clustering is used for categorizing pixels into the given cluster centers. Connected component labeling is used for labeling the objects in an image and extracting the cyst region. Further, PCM clustering is more robust in the case of noisy data, and the proposed method can extract a ganglion cyst area with an accuracy of 80% (16 out of 20 images).

  • In this paper, we propose a swarm-based possibilistic c-means(PCM) algorithm in order to overcome the problems of PCM, which are sensitiveness of clustering performance due to initial cluster center's values and producing coincident or close clusters. To settle the former problem of PCM, we adopt a swam-based global optimization method which can be provided the optimal initial cluster centers. Furthermore, to settle the latter problem of PCM, we design an adaptive thresholding model based on the optimized cluster centers that yields preliminary clustered and un-clustered dataset. The preliminary clustered dataset plays a role of preventing coincident or close clusters and the un-clustered dataset is lastly clustered by PCM. From the experiment, the proposed method obtains a better performance than other PCM algorithms on a simulated magnetic resonance(MR) brain image dataset which is corrupted by various noises and bias-fields.

  • Type-2 fuzzy sets are preferred over type-1 sets as they are capable of addressing uncertainty more efficiently. The fuzzifier values play pivotal role in managing these uncertainties; still selecting appropriate value of fuzzifiers has been a tedious task. Generally, based on observation particular value of fuzzifier is chosen from a given range of values. In this paper we have tried to adaptively compute suitable fuzzifier values of interval type-2 possibilistic fuzzy c-means (IT2 PFCM) for a given data. Information is extracted from individual data points using histogram approach and this information is further processed to give us the two fuzzifier values $m_1$, $m_2$. These obtained values are bounded within some upper and lower bounds based on interval type-2 fuzzy sets.

  • Plain radiographic analysis is the initial imaging modality for suspected small bowel obstruction. Among the many features that affect the diagnosis of small bowel obstruction (SBO), the presence of gas-filled or fluid-filled small bowel loops is the most salient feature that can be automatized by computer vision algorithms. In this study, we compare three frequently applied pixel-clustering algorithms for extracting gas-filled areas without human intervention. In a comparison involving 40 suspected SBO cases, the Possibilistic C-Means and Fuzzy C-Means algorithms exhibited initialization-sensitivity problems and difficulties coping with low intensity contrast, achieving low 72.5% and 85% success rates in extraction. The Adaptive Resonance Theory 2 algorithm is the most suitable algorithm for gas-filled region detection, achieving a 100% success rate on 40 tested images, largely owing to its dynamic control of the number of clusters.

  • The number of senior citizens with large bowel obstruction is steadily growing in Korea. Plain radiography was used to examine the severity and treatment of this phenomenon. To avoid examiner subjectivity in radiography readings, we propose an automatic segmentation method to identify fluid-filled areas indicative of large bowel obstruction. Our proposed method applies the Hough transform to locate suspicious areas successfully and applies the possibilistic fuzzy c-means unsupervised learning algorithm to form the target area in a noisy environment. In an experiment with 104 real-world large-bowel obstruction radiographs, the proposed method successfully identified all suspicious areas in 73 of 104 input images and partially identified the target area in another 21 images. Additionally, the proposed method shows a true-positive rate of over 91% and false-positive rate of less than 3% for pixel-level area formation. These performance evaluation statistics are significantly better than those of the possibilistic c-means and fuzzy c-means-based strategies; thus, this hybrid strategy of automatic segmentation of large bowel suspicious areas is successful and might be feasible for real-world use.
