Effects of Critical Thinking and Communication Skills on the Problem-Solving Ability of Dental Hygiene Students

  • Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of critical thinking and good communication skills on the problem-solving abilities of dental hygiene students. Methods: A total of 508 dental hygiene students were convenience-sampled from 3 universities. Results: The results revealed that critical thinking had the highest intellectual fairness score of 3.60, and systematicity was the lowest at 3.19. The values for communication skills were high in reaction, social adequacy, and concentration, with an average of 3.65. Problem-solving abilities were in the following order: clarification of the problem, seeking solutions, and decision making. According to general characteristics, more extroverted personalities possessed higher levels of critical thinking, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities (p<0.01). Critical thinking scores were high (p=0.016) in students who responded that peer relationship was difficult; however, their communication skills were the lowest (p<0.001). Additionally, problem-solving abilities were highest among students who reported a difficult peer relationship (p=0.001). The higher the satisfaction with dental hygiene academics, the higher the critical thinking, communication skill, and problem-solving ability (p<0.001). Critical thinking showed a high positive correlation with variables in the following order: clarification of the problem, performing the solutions, seeking solutions, decision making, and evaluation and reflection. The communication skills were also related to these variables listed above (p<0.01). With critical thinking, confidence, watchfulness, intellectual passion/curiosity, sound skepticism, objectivity, and systematicity all influenced the problem-solving ability. Conclusion: Communication skills were influenced by noise control, putting on the other's shoe, social tensions, and efficiency, which affected the problem-solving ability. Dental clinics require dental hygienists to have critical thinking to make analytical judgments and effective communication skills to solve human relation problems with patients and care-givers. Therefore, these skills should be developed in dental hygiene students to improve their problem-solving abilities.

일 간호대학생의 간호전문직관, 비판적사고 성향, 셀프리더십 (Correlations Among Nursing Professionalism, Critical Thinking Disposition and Self-leadership in Nursing Students)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship among the factors of nursing professionalism, critical thinking disposition and self-leadership in nursing students. Methods: The participants were 715 nursing students in tertiary education. Data was collected from March 10 to 14, 2014 using self-report questionnaires and analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient with SPSS/win 17.0. Results: The mean scores for nursing professionalism ($3.48{\pm}.50$), critical thinking disposition ($3.14{\pm}.27$), self-leadership ($3.44{\pm}.40$) were above average. There was a positive correlation between nursing professionalism and self-leadership (r=.452, p<.01) and between critical thinking disposition and self-leadership (r=.405, p<.001). Conclusion: The result of this study indicates that developing nursing professionalism and critical thinking disposition in nursing students is significant for improving their self-leadership. Therefore the findings suggest meaningful basic data for nursing education.

간호학과 편입학생의 비판적 사고성향, 자아존중감 및 스트레스 대처간의 관계 (Critical Thinking, Self-Concept and Stress Adaptation of Transfer Nursing Students)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of critical thinking and self-concept on stress adaptation in transfer nursing students. Methods: For this study, data were collected from 196 transfer nursing students from Busan and South Gyeongsang Province Data collection was done during the period from September to December, 2015. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression. Results: The results showed that for critical thinking gender (t=2.48, p=.014), age (F=2.90, p=.044) and club activities (t=2.05, p=.041) were significant. Stress adaptation was significant according to academic year (F=3.81, p=.025). Critical thinking, self-concept and stress adaptation had positive correlations. Conclusion: Findings indicate that college adjustment for transfer nursing students could be enhanced through the development of programs to promote critical thinking and self-concept in the nursing curriculum.

신규간호사의 기본간호 업무에 대한 자기효능감과 비판적 사고성향 및 간호실무능력간의 상관성 연구 (A Correlation Study on Self-Efficacy, Disposition to Critical Thinking and Nursing Competency of New Nurses)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify self-efficacy, disposition to critical thinking and level of nursing competency in new nurses and to exam the correlation among these variables. Method: The sample was composed of 286 new nurses who had worked at E hospital for 1 year. Descriptive and correlation analysis using the SPSS program were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean score for self-efficacy was 67.10, disposition to critical thinking, 3.01 and nursing competency, 3.02. There were significant differences in scores for 3 variables between nurses with College degrees and nurses with Baccalaureate degrees. There was a significant positive correlation between disposition to critical thinking and nursing competency scores. Conclusion: Further study of the various components that influence nursing competency is necessary. Also based on the disposition to critical thinking, there is a need to develop education programs to strengthen curiosity and other related variables. The results of this study confirmed the necessity of developing a clinical model of nursing competency ability.

일 종합병원 간호사의 비판적 사고성향과 지식공유 활동 및 전문직 업무환경이 임상적 의사결정능력에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Critical Thinking Disposition, Knowledge Sharing Activity and Professional Work Environment on Clinical Decision-making Ability at General Hospital Nurses)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine nurses' critical thinking disposition and knowledge sharing activity and professional work environment on clinical decision-making ability. Methods: The data collection period for this study was from May 24 to May 31, 2021. The data were collected from 167 nurses who consented to participate in this study and have worked for more than one year at general hospital in Seoul. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. Results: A significant positive correlation was found between clinical decision-making ability and critical thinking disposition, knowledge sharing activity, and a professional work environment. Critical thinking disposition (β=.32, p<.001), knowledge sharing activitiy (β=.24, p=.002) and professional work environment (β=.20, p=.006) had a significant effect on clinical decision-making ability. These factors explained 35.5% of clinical decision-making ability (F=24.22, p<.001). Conclusion: Therefore, in order to develop the critical thinking disposition of nurses, development of systematic educational programs and strategies for practical application are needed. Through this, nurses can improve the professional decision-making ability and clinical performance ability.

Development of Storytelling Program for Science Learning Utilizing Local Myths as Contents

  • Existing science education that excludes narrative thinking impedes the understanding of the context of workbook content. The object of this research is to develop a storytelling-learning program based on narrative thinking to elevate learners' interest in science and expand their inventive problem-solving abilities. Following an analysis of the current Korean curriculum, eight types of storytelling materials that utilize local content were developed for grades 7-9. The learning program used quest storytelling and was designed such that learning activities such as investigation, discussion, and experimentation were included in the process of solving each quest. Learners experienced an interest in storytelling learning resulting from participation in this storytelling-learning program. Moreover, learners demonstrated inventive problem-solving abilities in the process of completing the stories. During the process of assembling the storytelling materials, the students interacted with enthusiasm and generated ideas. The teachers indicated a positive feedback to the storytelling program as a new attempt to stimulate learners' interests. In the future, with continuous development and application, storytelling-science-learning programs that base science learning on narrative thinking are expected to be successful.

분동을 활용한 문제의 수학적 탐구 (Mathematical Exploration of Counterweight Activities)

  • 본 논문에서는 평형저울을 이용하여 정확한 무게를 측정하기 위한 분동설계 과정에서 적용되는 수학적 내용 및 그 표현들에 대해 탐구하였다. 이 일련의 과정에서 일어날 수 있는 수학 장면과 아이디어 탐구, 2진법, 3진법의 2가지 다른 표현에 대한 이해 등을 포함한 구체적인 수학적 사고의 형성과정을 설명하고 분석한다. 이러한 과정을 현장에 적용하여 학습자의 수학적 사고의 발달과 수학적 성향을 개선시키는데 조금의 보탬이 되고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다.

스토리텔링을 활용한 과학과 STEAM 프로그램 개발 (Development of Science STEAM Program Using Storytelling)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of creative thinking activities and scientific attitude through the use of storytelling in the STEAM program for elementary students. For the purpose of this study, a teaching plan and worksheet for students using storytelling in STEAM was developed and applied. The results of this study are as follows: First, the change in students' creative thinking activities by applying the STEAM program using storytelling has statistically meaningful difference (p<.05). Second, the improvement in the scientific attitude score has statistically meaningful difference(p<.05). Third, according to the analysis of a questionnaire used to evaluate the program, students had a positive perception of the STEAM program and gained higher level of satisfaction about the lesson. Therefore, using storytelling STEAM program applied in this study might be useful to improve creative thinking activities, and can be expected to improve scientific attitude and should be widely applied to gifted education.

문제중심학습이 간호학생의 비판적 사고성향과 문제해결과정에 미치는 효과 (Effects of Problem Based Learning on Critical Thinking Disposition and Problem Solving Process of Nursing Students)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the change of critical thinking disposition and problem solving process in students who experienced problem-based learning. Method: This research design was one group pre-post test design. Twenty-five nursing students who participated in ‘'Nursing Process' course with two PBL packages for a semester in 2004 were the subjects of this study. The data were analyzed by repeated measures of ANOVA, and content analysis. Result: The problem defining in problem solving process was improved significantly, but there was no significant difference in the critical thinking disposition. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that PBL has a positive effect on nursing students' problem solving process, But for a more significant effect on a continuous base for critical thinking of nursing students, faculties should use web based and simulation-based education for self directed learning along with clinical situation-based scenarios.

'생각하는 과학' 활동이 중학생들의 기체 분자 운동 개념의 이해에 미치는 영향과 그 활동에 대한 인식 (Influence on the Understanding of the Gas Particles Behavior Concepts in 'Thinking Science' Activities of Middle School Students and Recognition on Its Activities)

  • 이 연구에서는 형식적 사고를 요구하는 '기체 분자운동'의 개념 이해에 형식적 조작기로의 인지가속을 목적으로 하는 '생각하는 과학' 활동을 사전에 적용했을 때 어떠한 효과가 있는지 알아보았으며 이 활동에 대한 학생들의 인식을 조사하였다. 교과서 내용 분석을 통하여, 기체 분자 운동의 개념 이해에 필요한 논리적 요소로 변인, 비례, 보상, 형식적 모형 등의 4가지 논리를 추출하였다. 실험 집단 학생들에게 4가지 논리와 관련된 9개의 '생각하는 과학' 활동을 처치한 후에 기체 분자 운동의 수업을 실시하고, 기체 분자 운동의 개념 이해에 대한 성취도 평가를 하였다. 기체 분자 운동 개념에 대한 실험 집단과 통제 집단간의 성취도는 t-검증 결과 유의미한 차이가 없었다. 성 별 분석에서는 사전 인지 수준을 공변인으로 한 공변량 분석 결과 실험 집단의 여학생이 유의미하게 성취도가 향상된 것으로 나타났다. 과학 성취도 평가의 논리 별 정답률에서는 변인 통제, 보상, 형식적 모형논리의 정답률이 통제 집단에 비해 높게 나타났으나 비례 논리는 거의 비슷하게 나타났다. 실험 집단의 '생각하는 과학' 활동에 대한 인식 조사 결과, 활동에 대한 인식이 긍정적일수록 성취도가 높게 나타났으며 과학적 사고력과 태도 영역이 기체 분자 운동의 성취도 사이에 상관관계가 있었다. 특히 구체적 조작기 후기(2B)의 학생들이 가장 긍정적 인식을 가지고 있었으며 성취도도 높았다. 학생들은 교과서에 나와 있지 않는 실험 소재를 다루게 되어 흥미로웠으며 실험 후 토론 시간을 가지면서 연구자가 된 듯한 느낌을 갖게 되어 '생각하는 과학' 활동을 통해 자신의 과학적 사고력이 향상된 것 같다고 답변하였다.
