Direct analysis of steel frames with asymmetrical semi-rigid joints

  • Semi-rigid joints have been widely studied in literature in recent decades because they affect greatly the structural response of frames. In literature, the behavior of semi-rigid joints is commonly assumed to be identical under positive and negative moments which are obviously incorrect in many cases where joint details such as bolt arrangement or placement of haunch are vertically asymmetrical. This paper evaluates two common types of steel frames with asymmetrical beam-to-column joints by Direct Analysis allowing for plasticity. A refined design method of steel frames using a proposed simple forth order curved-quartic element with an integrated joint model allowing for asymmetrical geometric joint properties is presented. Furthermore, the ultimate behavior of six types of asymmetrical end-plate connections under positive and negative moment is examined by the Finite Element Method (FEM). The FEM results are further applied to the proposed design method with the curved-quartic element for Direct Analysis of two types of steel frames under dominant gravity or wind load. The ultimate frame behavior under the two different scenarios are examined with respect to their failure modes and considerably different structural performances of the frames were observed when compared with the identical frames designed with the traditional method where symmetrical joints characteristics were assumed. The finding of this research contributes to the design of steel frames as their asymmetrical beam-to-column joints lead to different frame behavior when under positive and negative moment and this aspect should be incorporated in the design and analysis of steel frames. This consideration of asymmetrical joint behavior is recommended to be highlighted in future design codes.

Identification of Antimutagenic Compound from Kale by High Performance liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry

  • Kale(Brassica oleracea var. acephala) is one of Cruciferous vegetables that is closely related to the wild ancestral form of cabbabe. The ethanol extract of kale which contains the active compoundsss under Salmonella assay system was fractionated with chloroform to collect the nonpolar solvent soluble compounds, and then further fractionation was carried out by silica gel column chromatography. Among kale extracts separated by silical gel column chromatography, the fractions of 4, 5 and 6 exhibited strong antimutagenic activities. The major active compounds from the fraction were identified as chlorophyll derivatives by the analysis with HPLC-fritp-MS. The molecular weights of each chlorophyll derivatives in the sample were acquired from the peaks of positive ion atomosphere pressure chemical ionization (APCI) mas spectrometry.

  • An antifungal antibiotic was produced from Bacillus sp. YJ-63, and antibiotic was purified to a homogeneity by butanol extraction, Silica-gel column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 gel filtration column chromatography and HPLC. The purified antibiotic showed one spot on Thin Layer Chromatography, which was negative to ninhydrin and positive to iodine. This finding indicated that the antibiotic was a cyclopeptide structure. UV absorption spectrum of the antibiotic in methanol was maximal at 277 nm, which corresponded to the spectrum for all of the Iturin antibiotic. The antibiotic was stable up to $121^{cdot}C$ and in the range of pH $3.O{\sim}l2.0$ with a stable of ${\alpha}-amino$ acid and ${beta}-amino$ acid, and showed high activity for fungi and yeasts,

Column Generation Approach to the Steiner Tree Packing Problem (열 생성 기법을 이용한 스타이너 나무 분할 문제에 관한 연구)

  • We consider the Steiner tree packing problem. For a given undirected graph G =(V, E) with positive integer capacities and non-negative weights on its edges, and a list of node sets(nets), the problem is to find a connection of nets which satisfies the edge capacity limits and minimizes the total weights. We focus on the switchbox routing problem in knock-knee model and formulate this problem as an integer programming using Steiner tree variables. The model contains exponential number of variables, but the problem can be solved using a polynomial time column generation procedure. We test the algorithm on some standard test instances and compare the performances with the results using cutting plane approach. Computational results show that our algorithm is competitive to the cutting plane algorithm presented by Grotschel et al. and can be used to solve practically sized problems.

Numerical crack modelling of tied concrete columns under compression

  • In the present paper the problem of monotonically compressed concrete columns is studied numerically, accounting for transverse steel reinforcement and concrete cracking. The positive confinement effect of the ties on the core concrete is modeled explicitly and studied in the case of distributed or concentrated vertical load. The main aim is to investigate the influence of transverse reinforcement steel characteristics on the column load carrying capacity and ductility, in order to provide an evaluation about some standards requirements about the class and ductility of steel to be used for ties. The obtained results show that the influence of transverse reinforcement steel class of ductility is negligible both on the column load carrying capacity and on its ductility. Also the dissipated energy is basically unchanged. In view of these evidences, some standards requirements about the steel class of ductility to be used for ties appear to be rather questionable.

한국산 도꼬마리 추출물의 항균효과 및 분리 정제

  • Antimicrobial activity of various extracts of Xanthium strumarium L. was tested against 25 strains of bacteria, yeast and fungus. The crude ethylacetate extract exhibited strong growth inhibition to the tested strains with the exception of partial Gram-negative bacteria. The property of antimicrobial compound was very stable under heat treatment at $120^{\circ}C$, but it was unstable in acid (pH 3.0) and alkali (pH 10.0) treatment. The antimicrobial compounds were purified by boiling water extraction, ethylacetate extraction, charcoal column chromatography, silica gel column chro- matography and reverse phase HPLC. The purified compound A and B were detected in a single peak (each above 98% purity) through the HPLC analysis. The compound A and B showed a strong growth inhibition against Gram-negative and positive bacteria in the agar diffusion method. When tested by the FDA method using the esterase, compound A mainly inhibited the growth of bacteria and compound B showed the growth inhibition of both bacteria and yeasts.

  • In damage investigation of building structures suffering from earthquake, estimation of residual seismic capacity is essential in order to access the safety of the building against aftershocks and to judge the necessity of repair and restoration. It has been proposed that an evaluation method for post-earthquake seismic capacity of reinforced concrete buildings based. on the residual energy dissipation capacity (the residual seismic capacity ratio )in lateral force-displacement curve of structural members. The proposed method was adopted in the Japanese 'Damage Level Classification Standard' revised in 200l. To evaluate the residual seismic capacity of RC column, experimental tests with positive and negative cyclic loading was carried out using RC building column specimen. Parameters used by the experiment are deformability and member proportion. From the test results, it is appropriated that the residual seismic capacity of RC buildings damaged by earthquakes is evaluated using the method in the Guideline.

  • The antibiotics KG-1167A and KG-1167B were isolated from the fermentation broth of the bacterial strain KH-1167, identified as Cloetridium sp. The individual antibiotics, KG-1167A & KG-1167B were separated and purified by solvent extraction followed by silica gel column chromatography. These antibiotics showed antibacterial activities against broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. The physico-chemical properties and UV spectra suggest that they possess aromatic moiety in their structures.

  • ABSTRACT -- Recently, a method of magnetically-enhanced discharge columns is considered to increase the luminous efficacy of discharge lamps, which is based upon the face that the diffusion motion of charged particles in the discharge column strongly depends on the applied magnetic fields. This study investigates the effect of applied transverse magnetic fields on the light output of low-pressure Hg-Ar discharge. As a result, it is found that the electric field in the positive column increases according to the applied megnetic field, which causes an increase in the total light output. And this effect is much more pronounced upon the spectral line originating form the higher levels.

  • For positive integers n and d with d < n, an n × n array A based on 𝒳 = {0, 1, …, nd} is called a sparse anti-magic square of order n with density d, denoted by SAMS(n, d), if each non-zero element of X occurs exactly once in A, and its row-sums, column-sums and two main diagonal-sums constitute a set of 2n + 2 consecutive integers. An SAMS(n, d) is called regular if there are exactly d non-zero elements in each row, each column and each main diagonal. In this paper, we investigate the existence of regular sparse anti-magic squares of order n ≡ 1, 5 (mod 6), and prove that there exists a regular SAMS(n, d) for any n ≥ 5, n ≡ 1, 5 (mod 6) and d with 2 ≤ d ≤ n - 1.
