  • Piezoelectric (PZT) actuators have been widely used in precision positioning fields for their excellent displacement resolution. However, due to the inherent characteristics of piezoelectric actuators, hysteresis has been proven to greatly reduce positioning performance. In this paper, five mathematical hysteretic models based on activation function are proposed to characterize the nonlinear hysteresis characteristics of piezoelectric actuators. Then the performance of the proposed models is verified by particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and the experiment data. Thirdly, the fitting performance of the proposed models is compared with the classical Bouc-Wen model. Finally, the performance of the five proposed models in modelling hysteresis nonlinearity of piezoelectric drivers is compared, in terms of RMSE, MAPE, SAPE and operation efficiency, and relevant suggestions are given.

  • Precise point positioning (PPP) is increasingly used in several parts such as monitoring of crustal movement and maintaining an international terrestrial reference frame using global positioning system (GPS) measurements. An accuracy of PPP data processing has been increased due to the use of the more precise satellite orbit/clock products. In this study we developed PPP algorithm that utilizes data collected by a GPS receiver. The measurement error modelling including the tropospheric error and the tidal model in data processing was considered to improve the positioning accuracy. The extended Kalman filter has been also employed to estimate the state parameters such as positioning information and float ambiguities. For the verification, we compared our results to other of International GNSS Service analysis center. As a result, the mean errors of the estimated position on the East-West, North-South and Up-Down direction for the five days were 0.9 cm, 0.32 cm, and 1.14 cm in 95% confidence level.

  • In this paper, we propose a signal propagation modeling technique for generating a positioning fingerprint DB based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) signals. When a DB is created based on the location-based signal information collected in an urban area, gaps in the DB due to uncollected areas occur. The spatial interpolation method for filling the gaps has limitations. In addition, the existing gap filling technique through signal propagation modeling does not reflect the signal attenuation characteristics according to directions occurring in urban areas by considering only the signal attenuation characteristics according to distance. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a Deep Neural Network (DNN)-based signal propagation functionalization technique that considers distance and direction together. To verify the performance of this technique, an experiment was conducted in Seocho-gu, Seoul. Based on the acquired signals, signal propagation characteristics were modeled for each method, and Root Mean Squared Errors (RMSE) was calculated using the verification data to perform comparative analysis. As a result, it was shown that the proposed technique is improved by about 4.284 dBm compared to the existing signal propagation model. Through this, it can be confirmed that the DNN-based signal propagation model proposed in this paper is excellent in performance, and it is expected that the positioning performance will be improved based on the fingerprint DB generated through it.

  • UWB (Ultra Wide Band) refers to a system with a bandwidth of over 500 MHz or a bandwidth of 20% of the center frequency. It is robust against channel fading and has a wide signal bandwidth. Using the IR-UWB based ranging system, it is possible to obtain decimeter-level ranging accuracy. Furthermore, IR-UWB system enables acquisition over glass or cement with high resolution. In recent years, IR-UWB-based ranging chipsets have become cheap and popular, and it has become possible to implement positioning systems of several tens of centimeters. The system can be configured as one-way ranging (OWR) positioning system for fast ranging and TWR (two-way ranging) positioning system for cheap and robust ranging. On the other hand, the ranging based positioning system has a limitation on the number of terminals for localization because it takes time to perform a communication procedure to perform ranging. To overcome this problem, code multiplexing and channel multiplexing are performed. However, errors occur in measurement due to interference between channels and code, multipath, and so on. The measurement filtering is used to reduce the measurement error, but more fundamentally, techniques for removing these measurements should be studied. First, the TWR based positioning was analyzed from a stochastic point of view and the effects of outlier measurements were summarized. The positioning algorithm for analytically identifying and removing single outlier is summarized and extended to three dimensions. Through the simulation, we have verified the algorithm to detect and remove single outliers.

  • The Kalman filter has been widely used in the kinematic GPS positioning due to its flexibility and efficiency in computational points of view. At the same time, the relative positioning technique also provided the high precision positioning results by removing the systematic errors in the measurements significantly. However, the positioning quality may be degraded following to longer in baseline length. For this case, it is required that the remaining atmospheric effects, such as double-difference ionospheric delay and zenith wet delay, should be properly modeled by examining the characteristics of the stochastic processes. In general, atmospheric effects are estimated with the assumption of random walk, or the first-order Gauss-Markov stochastic process, which requires the precise modeling on the corresponding process noises. Therefore, we determined and provided the parameters for modelling the process noises for atmospheric effects. The auto-correlation functions are empirically determined at first, and then the parameters are extracted from the empirical auto-correlation function. In fact, the test results can be either applied directly, or used as guidance values for the modeling of process noises in the kinematic GPS positioning.

  • A controller design procedure for an electro-hydraulic positioning systems has been developed using $H{\infty}$ control. The generalized plant models and weighting function for multiplicative uncertainty modelling error was presented along with $H{\infty}$ controller designs in order to investigate the robust stability and performance. Both disturbance rejection and command tracking performances were improved with the $H{\infty}$ controller, and the better uniformity of time response is achieved across wide range of operating conditions than the PID, LQR and LQG control scheme. The multiplicative uncertainty case was specifically suited for the design of an electro-hydraulic positioning control systems using $H{\infty}$ control.

  • In this study, we developed a global ionosphere model based on measurements from a worldwide network of global positioning system (GPS). The total number of the international GPS reference stations for development of ionospheric model is about 100 and the spherical harmonic expansion approach as a mathematical method was used. In order to produce the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) based on grid form, we defined spatial resolution of 2.0 degree and 5.0 degree in latitude and longitude, respectively. Two-dimensional TEC maps were constructed within the interval of one hour, and have a high temporal resolution compared to global ionosphere maps which are produced by several analysis centers. As a result, we could detect the sudden increase of TEC by processing GPS observables on 29 October, 2003 when the massive solar flare took place.

  • As interest in underwater structures and ocean exploration increases, many researchers are proposing methods for modeling and controlling various remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Recently, hybrid systems composed of an autonomous underwater vehicle and an ROV capable of remote control and autonomous navigation are being developed. In this study we introduce a method that models Ariari-aROV, an ROV consisting of five thrusters, and performs navigation. The proposed ROV can be controlled manually and by autonomous navigation when given a target point. An extended Kalman filter is utilized for sensor measurement correction for more precise navigation. The proposed method is verified through a simulation.
