  • Given rapid growth of mobile messenger services (MMSs) such as KakaoTalk, Line, and Wechat, it has become critical to understand the mechanisms that lead to user loyalty in the MMS context. In this regard, this study examined key factors of user loyalty in the MMS environment. We posit attitudinal loyalty and IT expertise as key drivers of behavioral loyalty. In addition, the impacts of perceived usefulness and emotion on attitudinal loyalty were examined. Data collected from 235 KakaoTalk users who have used more than 1 year were empirically tested against a research model using partial least squares. The analysis results found that both attitudinal loyalty and IT expertise play an important role in enhancing behavioral loyalty in the MMS context. The findings of this study indicate that perceived usefulness and positive emotion significantly influence attitudinal loyalty, whereas negative emotion negatively affects it. The analysis results provide several insights that can help MMS providers understand the role of emotion in enhancing user loyalty.

  • Mobile messenger services (MMSs), such as Kakaotalk, Wetalk, Line, and Whatsapp, are gaining popularity worldwide because of communicating with other people without any cost. We examined key antecedents of user loyalty to understand user's decision-making process in the MMS environment. To capture a long-term relationship with service providers, we posit relational commitment and user satisfaction as key predictors of user loyalty. Moreover, the effects of perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment, and corporate image on user's decision-making processes were examined. The proposed model was tested by applying partial least squares to data from 220 experienced Kakaotalk users. The findings of this study found that both relational commitment and user satisfaction play an important role in enhancing user loyalty in the MMS context. The analysis results indicate that corporate image influences relational commitment and user loyalty through user satisfaction. The analysis results help MMS providers establish management or marketing strategies to effectively improve user loyalty.

  • Recently, collaborations through MCS use in team projects are frequently conducted. This study developed a research model to examine the impact of collaboration through MCS on project performance. Team commitment and team trust regarded as the key drivers of enhancing project performance. Moreover, we also investigated the effect of usefulness of MCS on project performance. We posit ubiquity, polychronic use, and ease of use as the key antecedents of usefulness of MCS. The proposed theoretical framework was tested by using survey data collected from 116 university students who have rich experience with collaboration through MCS. PLS was employed for the analysis of the data. The analysis results showed that team trust significantly influences team commitment and project performance, respectively. However, usefulness of MCS is not significantly related to team commitment, while it play a prominent role in enhancing project performance. The results reveals that ease of use has a significant effect on usefulness of MCS, whereas ubiquity and polychronic use are not significantly related to it. From theoretical and practical perspective, this paper can provide in-depth knowledge of the effects of collaboration via MCS on project performance.

  • We aimed at identifying the determinants of favorable UCC usage and creation by integrating emotional dimension, social influence and motivations. The finding show the significant effect of pleasure on intrinsic motivation in both Korea and U.S.A. Arousal has a positive effect on intrinsic motivation in the United States, but it has no relationship wit h intrinsic motivation in Korea. In case of social influence, subjective norm gives a significant impact on extrinsic motivation whereas proved insignificant in the United States. Image is shown to be significantly related with extrinsic motivation in both nations. Also, intrinsic motivation does not posit an effect on UCC usage and creation in Korea whereas it influences on UCC usage and is not related with UCC creation in the United States. In addition, it was observed that UCC usage has a positive and significant impact on UCC creation in both nations.

  • Parametric design systems serve as powerful assistive tools in the design process by providing a flexible approach for the generation of a vast number of design alternatives. However, contemporary parametric design systems focus primarily on low-level engineering and structural forms, without an explicit means to also take into account high-level, cognitively motivated people-centred design goals. We present a precedent-based parametric design method that integrates people-centred design "precedents" rooted in empirical evidence directly within state of the art parametric design systems. As a use-case, we illustrate the general method in the context of an empirical study focusing on the multi-modal analysis of wayfinding behaviour in two large-scale healthcare environments. With this use-case, we demonstrate the manner in which: (1). a range of empirically established design precedents -e.g., pertaining to visibility and navigation- may be articulated as design constraints to be embedded directly within state of the art parametric design tools (e.g., Grasshopper); and (2). embedded design precedents lead to the (parametric) generation of a number of morphologies that satisfy people-centred design criteria (in this case, pertaining to wayfinding). Our research presents an exemplar for the integration of cognitively motivated design goals with parametric design-space exploration methods. We posit that this opens-up a range of technological challenges for the engineering and development of next-generation computer aided architecture design systems.

  • This paper presents a cloth simulation technique that implements plastic deformation. Plasticity is the property that material does not restore completely to the original state once deformed, in contrast to elasticity. We model cloth using a particle model, and posit two kinds of connections between particles, i.e. the sequential connections between immediate neighbors, and the interlaced connections between every other neighbors. The sequential connections represent the compression and tension of cloth, and the interlaced connections the bending in cloth. The sequential connections are modeled by elastic springs, and the interlaced connections by elastic or plastic spring depending on the amount of the current deformation of the connections. Our model is obtained by adding plastic springs to the existing elastic particle model of cloth. Using the new model, we have been able to simulate bending wrinkles, permanently deformed wrinkles, and small wrinkles widely distributed over cloth. When constructing elastic and plastic spring models for sequential and interlaced connections, we took pain to prevent the stiffness matrix of the whole cloth system from being indefinite, in order to help achieve physical stability of the cloth motion equation and to improve the effectiveness of the numerical method.

  • This study proposes a new concept of a tunnel central drainage system by using a drain board to make a breakthrough on difficulties in the installation of conventional drainage system and draw-down of its drain capacity especially in long tunnels. A fundamental study has been performed for evaluation of the drain capacity of the planar drainage system adopted in this study. In fact, the system proposed makes possible to omit the side, transverse as well as central drainage pipes required in the conventional system, even if its drain capacity and any guideline for design are not available to date. In this circumstance, it is carried out to investigate the correlation between drain capacities and, shapes and posit ions of the columns of the drain board in terms of a variety of water inflows through hydrological model tests. It is shown from the tests that a drain capacity is highly influenced by the shape and the distance between the columns of a drain board in flowing direction, and a round rectangular shape of the columns leads to the highest capacity of drainage. And also, the shorter distance between the columns in flowing direction, the higher drain capacity would be achieved.

  • This paper makes a preparatory attempt to reconstruct 'the Korean Science Culture' toward which I think the Koreans should direct and orient themselves rather than describe the history of the science culture in Korea. This task requires us to define 'science culture.' So I propose, based on the definitions of science culture so far made, to consider the model of 'Humanized Science Culture' as a regulating ideal of the Korean Science Culture. To support the model, analyzing the concept of 'science literacy' of the 2061 Project, I posit the model of KDSC (Korean Designer of Science Culture) as the Koreans who will actually come to design the Korean Science Culture. KDSC refers to 'a reasonable man' who will represent a desirable Korean, rather than to a natural Korean. Then I spell out the conditions of becoming a KDSC and scrutinize the philosophical backbones of those conditions. Finally, I make a few suggestions for developing a program of designing and implementing the Korean Science Culture from the viewpoint of a model of KDSC.

  • This study examined customer's purchase decision-making processes in a coffee chain context. We posit customer satisfaction, brand image, and perceive value as key drivers of forming customer's repurchase intention. From the perspective of multidimensional perceived value concept, the effects of utilitarian, hedonic, and social value on customer's decision-making processes were investigated. The proposed model was empirically tested by using survey data collected from 232 university students who often visit several coffee chains. LISREL has been used to perform these analysis. The proposed theoretical model accounts for 67% of the variance in repurchase intention and 73% of the variance in customer satisfaction. The analysis results indicate that customer satisfaction and brand image play an important role in forming customer's repurchase intention. Further, utilitarian and hedonic values significantly affect customer's repurchase intention, whereas social value negatively influences it.

  • Demand/withdraw communication is an important dysfunctional pattern of serial arguing. This study aims at addressing factors that affect the ways in which self-demand/partner-withdraw pattern increases the likelihood of persistence of serial arguing. We posit that sensitivity to rejection is positively related to the degree to which individuals perceive a partners' behavior as generally disconfirming, which is positively related to enactment of self-demand/partner-withdraw during an argumentative episode. This sequence is positively related to perception of arguments as unresolved. In addition, among those who reported their argument was resolved, this sequence is positively related to the likelihood that the argument is resolved without mutual agreement. Serial mediation analysis confirmed that the likelihood of resolution without mutual agreement were positively associated with rejection sensitivity partially because high RS individuals are likely to perceive their partner to be generally disconfirming and to enact self-demand/partner-withdraw communication during the episode. However, this pattern did not apply to perception of the argument as resolved.
